Morgan, I don't have a sandblaster, but I've used vinegar and salt as a rust remover many times on metal planes. It works great if you're not in a hurry -- takes about 12 hours, depending on the severity of rust. Put them in a small container, cover with vinegar and add salt. When done soaking, pull them out, scrub them, rinse them with water and then add them to an empty container, add just enough water to cover them and add a couple tablespoons of baking soda to neutralize the acid and further loosen the rust. Let it sit for a few minutes and remove them and clean them with a brass brush or 0000 steel wool and blow dry them completely to make sure all moisture is gone. Coat with a thin film of oil. A rotary tool with a variety of brushes can aid the process, particularly in tight spots.

That's an awesome solution, I've heard there's problems with using vinegar for rust removal but your step of neutralizing the acid makes alot of sense!

Awesome I just bought a old Stanley number 4. Looks to be 1930s ww2 era. I'm kinda nervous about fixing it up for use so this was helpful. Thank you for the great video

It is a little nerve wracking but once it's done, it's awesome to put such old tools to use!

Hand tools for life! Nice little type 11, dude. Should save you quite a bit of sanding time.

That's what I'm hoping for, the #5's do pretty good but I'm excited to see how this plane works for that final finishing step!

Consider citric acid for rust removal. Evaporust is expensive. Oxalic acid is slightly stronger. I found a nice Stanley on eBay with wooden handles in a box. I don't think it had ever really been used. Quite cheap too. Lucked out there.

I'll have to try citric acid, because $50 a jug for this stuff is definitely a bit expensive!

@@morganhurst_redridge Geoff Croker has a great video on both rust removal and electro platin. Evaporust is a 5 % solution of EDTA. So you can make your own a bit cheaper
