Dozens of Torbay Palms, (Corylines) have been felled in Torquay as reported in the press today including the Telegraph and Daily Mail.
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023...
I have called them palm trees in the video as that's how they reported in the press and quoted.
What do you think about the felling of these trees?

I went to Torquay when I was seven and was amazed with the "palm" trees and vowed to have palm trees in my garden. The trees in you videos looked magnificent and it is a shame to see what has happened to them.

Great video. The BBC asked to use footage from my Torquay Garden Tour video for their national news story.

Wow! I go there every year for our hoildays. That's why I got into tropical gardening. What a shame. Most looked fine to me and we walked though the park too.

Only been once but really shocked by this, as they truly were a beautiful sight and it seems the very people who are constantly at us to be environmentally friendly, completely ignore the publics feelings at their meetings, so please have a meeting where you agree that we must get public approval for our plans

Who'd have thought, a council that decimates trees, without considering the views of the environment or the people it supposedly represents. This was done without public consultation. Shame on Torbay Council!

Don't know the situation in Torquay, but cabbage trees don't produce actual wood and do tend to rot out when damaged. They do resprout rapidly if cut down like this. On my farm in New Zealand I have these Cordylines that are hundreds of years old. Really knarly looking things growing in tough conditions. They have a real beauty to them that only age can bestow.

I used to live there and I think it's disgraceful!!! I just wonder how much public consultation went on before this happened...😮

No public consultation at all. There doesn't have to be when governments and councils have no accountability!

It’s sad Even with an apology They wanted something they didn’t need to plant yearly But decided to take out the trees which , of course , they did not need to replace yearly. The council has apologise Maybe we need to take them to court and make a law saying that any tree cutting needs to be publicised in local news paper for 6 months before felling As well as clear signs posted on each tree saying it will be cut in 6 months and stating the felling date😮😢

Unbelievable! Wonder what their plan is for the stumps as they will likely grow again from those if not removed. Seems drastic. I’m sure a bit of tidy up would have been a better option.

An absolute disgrace. These councils do things like this to suit their own agendas. They know that if they do publicise them in advance there will be a huge backlash. So instead, they just go ahead, knowing that they can't be undone and there won't be any real repercussions. Heads need to roll for this.

Same council that planted 3 large Phoenix Dactylifera palms on the sea front which were doomed to die even in Torquay, lot of other proven palms could have been planted there but not their money wasted to worry about 😔

Things like these should be illegal. At a certain age it should also be a decision of the inhabitants if old plants could be cut down. At least they should explain and inform the people beforehand and if it's really necessary then OK... but imagining living there for decades over generations and see all of those gorgeous Cordylines being chopped down is disrespectful to the people. We currently don't need any more distrust in politicians and authorities. Dumb way of handeling this imo...

Some ones in Cornwall declined around that age or even earlier. I can get that they might have been in decline or soon to be in decline due to their age. But... surely they knew they were getting old for decades. 80 years is extremely old! They could have started planting replacements...😮. Not that they take too long to grow, but now it will look bare for quite a few years.

The way swisco said ' in our enthusiasm to get on with the scheme, we raced ahead and failed to let the public know.' Do they really think the people are that stupid. They just didn't want to be attacked like in Sheffield. Steve Bingley, leader of plymouth city council had to retire after plymouth tree felling, again after so many were shocked as they didn't warn .now there is judicial review to ascertain if the council acted illegally or not . l ll sign donate towards any petition to get rid of anne marie bond.they knew there would be outrage, so they thought ' we ll just apologise & hope for the best' .People have said the trees looked fine.they should show evidence of decline .

I assume the council are not facing any questions/repercussions about this crime they committed? Many tourists will go somewhere else which has gardens to admire and enjoy. At the very least there should be some plan to restore/compensate/redesign the gardens for aesthetic and environmental purposes. Anyone know where document detailing future plans are available to read?

They say some of the trees showed signs of degradation; do you think the idea is that they could have been dangerous i.e. falling branches, or just starting to look a bit tatty? It's a bit of an own goal by the council in my opinion, if they really had to go then it would have been better, as other commenters have suggested, to have planted some replacements several years back. A bit like RAACs, there was no plan to replace the defunct material! :) I've never been to Torquay but it's famous for its palms, I remember being rather taken aback when my school friend told me about them after he'd been on holiday there.

Absolutely criminal action by the Council. Shortsighted bastards! I am 86 living in Belgium but I had a cousine who lived there and i remember these trees from the postcards she sent me. Palms in U.K. really were an attraction internationally. Stupid decision to waste them now.

from all of the comments in your video, all the residents as well as the holiday makers are in shock, given public notice this would have caused outrage! unless plans are in place to replace them. lets see the health reports on them then, dont forget , the whole cornish county has been sold over the years on the cornish riviera , with photo's and railway posters depicting the palms in them as you say for over a hundred years they owe a lot to the county its not going to be the same without them, also its a shame the cipd on the lambeth bridge roundabout is going to be another victim , like the video you put up re palms all over the country many of the london ones were on or near council property or housing developments and have been removed also just sad!

Not long lived trees over here unfortunetly iv seen them get rot leaving them unsafe in public places . At the age they are they are coming to the end unfortunetly . Council cant really win if leave them and blow down crushing someone they are at fault and obviously no one wants to see them gone . 60 to 80 years is usually a normal life span for cordylines so they are very old trees .
