100 years Westhafen Berlin - port festival of BEHALA on September 3rd, 2023

For the 100th anniversary of the west port, BEHALA (Berliner Hafen und Lagerhausgesellschaft mbH, which was also founded in 1913) organized a big party. This video shows some impressions from the day.
An explanatory video about the port will follow in the near future.
On September 3, 1923, the first section of the west port was inaugurated. The subsequent expansions between 1924 and 1927 then made the western port temporarily the second largest and most modern inland port in Germany.
In cooperation with the architect Richard Wolffenstein, Friedrich Krause, city planning officer for civil engineering, created an independent port city whose architectural unity is still striking today. The docks and the buildings are arranged according to a regular floor plan around the center of the complex, the middle dock: administration building, casino with dining hall, warehouses, cranes for loading and unloading the ships.
The administration building is located in the central axis of the port.
In the early days, mainly building materials and coal were handled in the west port.
“Warehouse II” was leased to the American car manufacturer Ford. By 1931, around 300 workers assembled 37,000 vehicles of the standard Ford T model. The delivery of individual parts by ship from the USA by ship and the assembly in Berlin were tax-efficient than the export of finished cars.
At the beginning of the Second World War, the National Socialists wanted to make Germany self-sufficient and had the port expanded between 1939 and 1943 with a mighty granary, which has 10 usable floors and a height of 53 meters and could hold 30,000 tons of grain.
After the war and the surviving blockade of West Berlin, the warehouse was used as a storage location for the so-called "Senate reserve". Coal, canned goods and toilet paper were stored in the Westhafen until the early 1990s.
After reunification, the warehouse was converted into a magazine. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation has been using most of the building since 1997. The Secret State Archives and the newspaper and children's and youth book departments of the Berlin State Library also have their holdings in the port, and the judicial administration stores its files and land registers here.
The historic warehouse 1 next to it is now rented out as the "Westhafen Event & Convention Center".
With an area of 430,000 square meters, the Westhafen is the largest port in Berlin. It is divided into two parallel harbor basins. It is connected to the Spree and Havel via the Westhafen Canal and the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal (known as the Hohenzollern Canal to the west) and is thus integrated into the national waterway network between the Elbe and the Oder. The Westhafen is still an important transhipment and storage area for inland shipping in Berlin.

Für mich ist der Behala Westhafen immer so ein bisschen der Hamburger Hafen in Miniaturversion. Sehr schöne Eindrücke von den Feierlichkeiten 👍

Als Kind kam ich bzw wir Kinder auf den Weg zur Ploetze am Westhafen vorbei. Einer meiner drei Schwager arbeitete im Westhafen fuer gute 30 Jahre als Kranfuehrer. Danke fuer das Video und die Erinnerungen die es brachte.
