Rx8 owner, here... Never had a serious issue with mine. I take it on a roadtrip abroad once a year with peace of mind. You do not necessarily need a rebuild at 70 miles. Sometimes it's early, sometimes it's much later. Depends on how well maintained the car has been.

RX8's are only good for engine/trans swapping, I had one got it for 3k with 28k miles then the engine failed at 90k. It was a fun car but way too unreliable, wish I did an LS2 swap on it. It does have potential, that's what people usually do with them the swap the engine/trans immediately.

If you look at mazdas compression range chart for this car, anything below 6.90 is low compression. Fresh, healthy engines are at 10-11. After like 45k, apex seals are almost always worn down and compression and power loss gradually increase. They can keep running for another 30k but the engine casing will have heavy scoring and that will need to be replaced as well.

In this episode Taylor came across as the sort of kid at school that's a bad winner and a bad loser. I may not be the only one who agrees but I think it would be really dope if the best car of the challenge gets it's own little mini series. I know it's a possible redo if the RX-8 wins but if I'm being honest I still think I would love that possibility most simply because of how much I love that car and platform. But even if it blows up I truly think the winner of this challenge should get a budget build and then it can fuse with the prior mini series of the $1,500 car series and directly compare the differences in that extra little bit to start with overall quality of car. Maybe get a cool track day out if as well and if it blows the extra videos are nice and easy content during the tail end of the cold season

I am just about sick of people slating the rx8 for reliability, I have owned 20+ rx8 and done a lot of mileage on the rx8 platform and they’re no more unreliable than a 4 stroke car I’ve never been let down by one, I swear people will buy 1 with no service record and then moan when it blows up 6 months later. They are a specialist car with a unique engine but with good maintenance I’ve seen 120k miles on an unopened engine. As for compression figures it can only give you a rough guide to how healthy an engine is, it’s more about how much pull or hp the engine makes, as for reving it flat out when it’s cold your the stereotypical people I see that own one and wonder why it breaks sorry for the rant

Yup. Drove really nicely, well damped, well balanced and just enough power to have fun. Couldn't take mates out though to impress as it couldn't deal with the increased weight! Engine went at just over 50k miles. Overall build quality wasn't great either. Rust was horrific and had numerous other issues go. So relieved to see it go.

I’ll tell you exactly what happened to that tie rod end. A tow truck picked it up, and accidentally hooked the J hook there instead of the control arm, and when they winched it up onto the trailer, bent the track rod arm. I see it all the time. Tow truck guys are knuckle dragger’s who can barely complete sentences. Do you expect them to give a rats ass about someone’s vehicle? Me either

Depending on who does it, some garages really don't like rust with MOTs. I once heard one fail a car for "structural" because of rust on the door, not the sills, the actual door. Though he was a twat

My brother had a RX-8, he didn't drive it for a few months and the brakes ceased. Given where we live in Scotland watching it go around roundabouts was hilarious and when it snowed he crashed into a lamp post. Moment the fuel got low he worried he wouldn't make it to the petrol station that was at the bottom of the road. He went to collect the kids from School and the battery died after being used. His RX-8 was then written off when a lorry drove over the long bonnet. I feel like this is confirmation that the RX-8 is unreliable.

Previous RX-8 owner here. One of the most beautiful cars I've ever owned. And great fun to drive. Also the most expensive. Think I paid around £8000 for mine. Due to the hi-reving (9000rpm anyone?) but very interesting Wankel engine, one of the rotors failed, which I seem to remember cost around £800 to fix. Also roughly once a month I had to pay for some sort of respray and/or bodywork due to living in Glasgow and the local thugs smashing it up for fun. And it got something like 17mpg on a good day. The jury is out if I spent more of fuel, or repairing damage due to vandalism. I moved to Thailand shortly after. It was cheaper than the RX-8 repair bills. Don't take your RX8 to Scotland. They don't like nice things. It will either bankrupt you in fuel or the local neds will smash it up for fun.

Always remember on the car throttle series about the RX8 and the specialist said to put some two stroke oil in the petrol to help the apex seals 😆 first time ive ever heard that but apparently it does extend engine life
