What i dont understand is if the idea is to create something new in the area, why use tnt to remove the houses? It would make a lot more sense to dismantle them and collect the resources, plus you wouldnt have to fill in holes in the ground, also, many of the roof blocks may not be destroyed either and rather left floating. Tnt idea is just making more work for everyone with less benefit afterwards.
