Internet speed doesn’t matter for gaming. ISPs say that just to make the sale. Gaming hardly uses any data so as long as you have at least a consistent 10+mbps you won’t notice much of an improvement. You will want more bandwidth if you have other people doing other things on the internet at the same time as you. Ping is your best friend for gaming and you can’t pay for a better ping. Ping varies based on location, ISP, equipment used, etc. nothing really in your control. Internet speeds of 1Gbps is good for downloading or uploading large files very fast. It can download a game fast, but if the game is already installed on your computer you aren’t going to get any different of an experience. It’s also good if you want 200 people on your network to be able to stream Netflix at the same time. I can’t see any reason to have 1Gbps in a home unless you are really impatient and need to download a 4GB file in 4 minutes instead of 30 minutes everyone now and then.

@@SirTazTTV Hes right in some way. Ping is all that matters. Higher speeds is just for more consistency.
@elmergloo32595 жыл бұрын
Sir Taz I do play games competitively. I am also an IT professional. Ping is has the greater effect on your gaming experience. Download/Upload speed has a minimal effect on gaming. Yes you will want a slightly faster speed than you need for a consistency cushion to leave enough bandwidth available to whatever other people or devices are using your network, but that doesn’t mean you will need 1Gbps. 50-100Mbps is a good cushion range for most families. If you live alone and just use a LAN cable 20Mbps is the most you will need for consistency in gaming assuming you don’t have a bunch of IoT devices on your network and aren’t trying to stream video at the same time . There are many variables and every household is different, but if you lived alone and your PC was the only thing using internet you could actually game just fine with a consistent 5-10Mbps. The only reason you need higher speeds is to allow background internet using processes on your PC and/or people and IoT devices on your network to do what they need to without taking away from the bandwidth you need. Most people I know that have internet issues this is their main problem. Every ISP I’ve had they have had consistent speeds almost exact to what I am paying for. The router/modems they provide have terrible WiFi though and that is what most people overlook. I have friends who have paid for 20-100Mbps internet and only use the ISP provided router and complain they only get 2-5Mbps. It is because they are using the crappy built-in single-band WiFi on the router and a family of 4-6 people are all trying to use it at the same time at different edges of the house. However when I plugged my laptop into their router’s Ethernet port I always got the exact speed they were paying for. I know Ethernet cables don’t work for everyone based on router location and computer location, but you can still get a fast wireless network working with a decent tri-band router. I have a family of 4 and we currently have 60Mbps. I can game with 19ms ping on Overwatch with zero interruptions while my wife is watching KZbin on her phone and my son is watching shows on Netflix on our TV. I could probably live with 40Mbps for my family’s usage, but 60Mbps is the lowest option my ISP has. 1Gbps is a huge cushion that most households will never need unless you have 100 kids watching HD cat videos at the same time.

Interesting video! I have an important question I'd like to ask which I have been curious to know for some time. Does a pure fibre connection sort out multiplayer latency with faraway countries? For example playing a game like FIFA UK or US vs Australia is associated with serious latency delay where after you press the button the ball is passed 2-5 seconds later. This is extremely frustrating to the point where I have to avoid being matched up with people from Australia, New Zealand, India, etc as the online gameplay experience is totally unplayable. Now the question is if I had a pure Fibre to the premises connection and the opponent from Australia/New Zealand also had a pure Fibre connection, will this solve or improve the latency/lag issue online with these players so the online gameplay experience was smooth as if you were playing in the same continent? Or is the technology still not advanced enough to face such players online from faraway countries? If fibre broadband does not solve the latency issue in multiplayer online then I would have less regrets about not having it yet!
@JohnGlasscock6 жыл бұрын
Matchmaking is determined by the game server algorithm not the type if internet you have. The servers usually look at your geographical location based on your IP when matchmaking. If both you and your friend had pure fiber it's possible the latency would be lower but there would definitly still be higher than desired latency

My question to you, would it be worth me paying to have the provider run the fiber to me .5 miles down the road? I have no idea what this would cost but living with basically no internet has killed me. I beleive they could tie into the fiber leading to this buissness? Also, is the speed of fiber that high, as mentioned in the video, no matter the location? Basically if I spend all the money I think i'm going to spend getting the internet here, will the speed be good for gaming still? Kinda my last option besides moving... and I love where I live. I could barely play any games a lot of times on my PS4, then for a couple of years when there was someone’s house I was living at that one was 40 Mbps through U-Verse, good but not great. The 1000 Mbps has made such a huge difference for me especially since I have multiple devices connected to it although most of it not simultaneously. My phone, tablet, PS4, PS5, and security cameras all work well within the system just fine. Of course it helps that I live by myself too but still, fiber Internet is definitely the way to go if you can afford it.

The thing i found is some providers might have the same speeds as others but the ping might be worse , the ping is vital that its the best it can be for online gaming as the actual data that is transferred between games is not that much at all so a relatively cheap dsl package that has decent ping is all you need of course that's where you need to do your homework and know what your provider is actually providing.
@JohnGlasscock6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is true I always had very decent pings with comcast
@therebelsmurf54434 жыл бұрын
I dont know man, but from my experience everytime I've upgraded speed wise my ping has gone down. Maybe it's because they upgraded the equipment at the same time. My isp sends fiber to the node and then copper from the node to house. They call it a hybrid internet. It has been very reliable, not much to complain about. Soon though another company will be installing fiber in my area so I'm very anxious to try it out. Also it seems that my overall performance in multiplayer games have gotten significantly better with each increase in internet speed. With that being said I live out in the sticks far away from any servers so if I can get an internet speed that shortens the time it takes to send information to those servers then sign me up. In my opinion faster is always better as long as quality is there to.
@QuantumBraced4 жыл бұрын
To me ping and packet loss are much more important than bandwidth. 100 mbps is honestly enough for anything, most servers won't even let you transfer 1 gigabit nor would it make a difference if they did. But 0% packet loss and a tiny ping make things feel so much faster and snappier... and that is why fiber is best.

I used to have Comcast too until I discovered, after upgrading some network equipment, that their connection was bottlenecking my network... I was getting some terrible bufferbloat and I didn’t have a good QOS in place. Which, you don’t actually need on a gigabit fiber since it’s highly unlikely you will be saturating that connection so you aren’t really losing anything much. I find QOS to hurt my throughput more often then it helps. I get consistent 900-950Mbps upstream and down with it off but will dip into the 800’s with it on. Also, I advise against using upnp, it’s convenient but at the cost of network security... Port forwarding would or even triggering would be a better choice. Still not secure, but less vulnerable than upnp... The best way, if you can afford it, would be to invest in an extra router and switch and isolate them on separate VLAN from any important devices. As for the “required” gateway issue, that one was pretty trivial to sort out... I’ll send you a message about that one if you’d still like to use your own router... 😏

I live in a mountain town and am straight up convinced that the path up the canyon is badly made, because pinging Denver which is about 40 miles is 22-25ms. I imagine there's some packet loss that adds to the issues as it goes beyond that too. I hope that living in Longmont with fiber internet will cut ping by roughly 30ms for most servers. Or I guess if I had gigabit fiber I could run a server if I was willing to pay $10 a month in electricity.

Speed has nothing to do with online gaming❗ Latency / ping count in online gaming❗
@thegoldenchild46575 жыл бұрын
People are dumb and don't listen
@Pixelon_5 жыл бұрын
Well you're right and you're wrong. Latency is the most important thing in gaming but if you have really weak Upload/Download, and other people are connected to Wi-Fi using the bandwidth(watching Netflix/KZbin) then that will ultimately affect your ping... making it spike very high. Conclusion. Low download/upload = high ping when others are using bandwidth, but higher upload/download won't necessarily increase your ping, just make it more stable when others are using internet cos more bandwidth.
@aaronmotta70285 жыл бұрын
your ping is partially based on how fast your internet can upload information to the gaming server.... so yes, it has a lot to do with gaming.

Love the video but I had a question: What should your internet speed (upload and download speed) be if you bough the 1000MBPS internet package? I just moved to a new place and went from 250Mbps to 1000Mbps but all my videos are taking longer to load as I can't watch twitch at 1080p. I have done a bunch of speed test but am not sure what the readings should be. I have comcast but I am getting download speeds of 10.3 mbps and upload speeds of 40 Mbps and this is for my desktop that is plugged directly into the router. Thanks for all the help!

@JohnGlasscock6 жыл бұрын
There is no true bridge mode within at&t gateway. DMZ will still result in double nat. The only real way to get an actual bridged connection with at&t requires you to do a complex setup to trick at&t authentication while using your own router. I've looked into it but it's not worth my time. I'm actually very happy with how my network is currently set up

In my opinion there is a bit of an advantage with fiber compared to cable. It’s a bit subtle and I’m not confident it’s not a placebo thing but I’m pretty sure the shot s registration feels more smooth and consistent. I especially notice it with csgo other games not really so much. I had an internet a cable internet provider called NewWave, KT was 200 up and like 30 down and only had like 2 or 3 days in 4 years without service so I was very satisfied with their service. I’d still prefer fiber just because of ping advantage.

John Glasscock Hey man! So, my family uses Verizon as a internet provider and all throughout my life, downloading games on my Xbox took FOREVER to the point where I just got used to it (around 2-4 mbs download speed). At home, my parents are always using the computer for work and multiple devices are using the WiFi at a time in my house (including my Xbox One). To be fair for me, I'll be upgrading from 35 mbps to 1 gig once it's available to my area coming up. Supposedly it will be very cheap (I.e 35-40 quid) and the reasoning is because of reliability, quick speeds, and much better online experiences where I won't be having problems within games. I have looked at possibly settling for just 500 mbps, but given how long it has been, I might as well take what I can get.

The att gateway is their modem. You can turn off all of the wifi and router functions making it solely a modem. After that connect your own router and other networking equipment.

Im 5 years late but everyone i just want u to all know the internet john is on is not a residential connection its a dia connection this means basically that its direct internet access and its dedicated this is why he can run around and gun down other players with little to no lag something people dont understand is that when your on a residential connection your connection is shared between u and ur neighborhood this means that the reliability rate is about 10% main while john on a dedicated business connection has about 100% reliability i just want to point this out as it was never talked about in the video alot of KZbinrs are using this knowledge to gain a advantage on other players in games and it should be talked about thanks for your time fellow gamers and stay safe and aware out there
@Detective_Nia7 ай бұрын
Now just to understand the gratitude of this incase people dont know what i mean when i say reliability rate it means how often u get hit markers when u shoot a enemy target theres three ways u can test your internet to see if its a shared connection number1: if you do a speed test and you see u have a bunch of random jitter u cant explain like you tried reducing your upload and so on. But the upload or download jitter is extremely high then this means your on a shared residential connection/number2: another way u can tell if your on shared residential connection is if you play any game and notice u have horrible hit reg issues and terrible desync from the server like its impossible to play the game even with a low ping/ and finally number3 your download speeds and upload speeds you never get the full amount your paying for and your download speeds randomly plummet at certain times of the day all of these are vaild reason and just know you dont suck at games people like john are just cheating you im not mad at John im not everything he says in his videos are mostly true but this is the only thing him and most youtubers arent honest about and it needs to be brought to light we love u john but u gotta start being honest about this connection stuff ok seriously ur hurting peoples lives not giving them this valuable information ive had friends commit suicide being bullied so bad because their connection wouldnt let them play at their full potential and they didnt know that it was because they were on a shared connection ive had friends who wanted to become pro league but youtubers are too afraid to give up their spot as number one so they keep this knowledge from people another thing and i guess u could say this is number 4 i forgot to mention this but if you cant foward ports thats another sign the thing about a residential connection is everyone behind a cg nat a cg nat is a bigger router thats over your router and everyone elses that u all connect to and as john has mentioned in his other videos buffer bloat is a serious problem so what do you think would happen when you have the whole neighborhood on one router

The problem with cable internet like Xfinity is because it runs off 1 shared line throughout the neighborhood. Not a dedicated line to your home. The cables that are wired within your neighborhood causes down times when many people are using the internet like between 5 pm and 9 pm.. you will experience down times. Thats how they get you.. they advertize 1000-3000 gbps but people dont read “up to”. Their speeds are not dedicated. If you want dedicated.. get fiber.

I’m not going to lie... I would love to have better internet one day! I live in a small town in Louisiana, and I absolutely love playing games online, but I hate the speeds (284.6KBPS Download; 132.4KBPS Upload). I have so many games that I have bought and can not play due to slow speeds… I wish that ISP’s would realize how many people would pay for their services to just use on a daily basis, and not worry about data usage... The internet I have is set like a limited data plan… The most I can have a month is 50GB which sounds good, but I easily use a whole months worth in about 18 hours. (Me and three other people).
