FYI, I have experimented with protecting the IC-705. First tried the Peovi aluminum case and carried it in a maxpedition water bottle case. I later replaced the Peovi cage with a form fitting 3d printed face plate (488456 on printables by KF0ARE) that protects the knobs and screen. When I need increased protection, I insert the above kit into a seahorse SE58 waterproof hard case. I have no problem throwing just the radio & printed 3d case into a backpack. Just ordered a screen film for added protection off of amazon. Hope this saves you a lot of trouble.
