Today I’m giving you a 100K KZbin SUBSCRIBERS special video (more of a podcast really), in honour of the fact that all my wonderful subscribers from all over the world have helped History Calling to reach this fantastic milestone. I’ll be answering questions including, ‘how do you do your research’, ‘what got you into KZbin’, ‘do you have your 100k subscribers play button yet’ and confirming for some who have been a little unsure of where I’m from, that this is what a Northern Irish accent sounds like. 😊 This 100k subscribers Q&A video will also answer many other questions which you have sent me via my Community Tab and Instagram page.

If I create a Patreon site, what rewards would you like (bearing in mind it can't be things that would add a lot to my workload and I can't do early access to videos for technical reasons)? Edit: I've now created the PATREON site! Check it out at www.patreon.com/historycalling

Maybe we get to vote on video topics?
@AshleyChikosky
@AshleyChikosky 2 жыл бұрын
One very easy Patreon idea would be to have a low cost tier (like $1) where people can "vote" on your next video to film. You can easily make a poll through Patreon for that. Maybe have a tier (for like $5?) that gives access to voting AND some of your works for free? Like you could post one article (or maybe even a lesson plan or footage of current locations you've been to but haven't shown us before?) you've done a month that they would have otherwise had to pay to access? Long term that may be an issue when you run out of projects you've worked on.... I'll keep thinking for you and comment again if anything else comes to mind.
@AshleyChikosky

For a $10 tier (this is probably stretching it in terms of extra workload but) you could do a shorter 10-20 minute Patreon Q&A video once a month plus the voting and access to a new (to us, not in time) work of your's a month.

Thank you so much :-) Yes, it's very annoying to have lazy scum stealing my ideas. If it happened once in a blue moon, I'd put it down to a coincidence, but when it happens over and over and over again in the space of just a few months, it's painfully obvious that they're thieving from me. It makes me feel a little better though to know that other people have realised what is happening too and it's not just me.

@@HistoryCalling I just found your cannel a few days ago and really fell in love with your story telling, the visuals and your voice. It’s so nice to learn more about passed times, you present every information really nice. Just after I found you, the channel mentioned above was suggested to me by the algorithm. I checked out a video and the page and understood quite fast that some person is copying your work. It’s actually a crime in some countries. I hope this person learns to do her own research or starts mentioning you at least. Keep going with your wonderful channel, and congratulations on hitting 100k subscribers :)

@@HistoryCalling I’ve just been trying to work out if it’s HRH or not and realised it is. I’ve actually blocked the channel as don’t want to support content stealing. I love your videos and find them so interesting and honestly, I thought their videos were quite poorly done. The voiceovers sound very disjointed and don’t flow, and there seems to be a lack of research! I wonder why…. Thanks for flagging this!

I also come from something of a history background (major in my uni degree) and there are so many "history" channels on KZbin that I can't bear to watch because they focus on sensationalism and don't source anything. See, that's what I'm like too, but it's really noticeable looking at my analytics that that's not what most people are like. I understand why they lean towards the familiar of course, but I would enjoy being able to branch out a bit more sometimes without taking a massive financial hit because people won't watch the videos. I love the Tudors, but they can get a bit repetitive and there's very little that's new to say about them making it hard to find a fresh angle (though I try my best).

@@HistoryCalling Have you 'covered' the *Battle of Linlithgow Bridge* H C? (Please forgive my 71 year-old memory if you have ...) 'The Battle of Linlithgow Bridge is a battle that took place on 4 September 1526 in the village of Linlithgow Bridge, outside the Scottish town of Linlithgow. It was fought between a force of 10,000 men led by the Earl of Lennox and a force of 2,500 led by James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran. The battle was part of a power struggle in Scotland for control of the young Scottish king, James V.' [Wi k i] *The Battle* 'In 1526, Margaret persuaded the Earl of Lennox and Cardinal Beaton to support her cause. Lennox raised an army over 10,000 and marched on Edinburgh from his base in Stirling. By this time Archibald Douglas had won the support of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran and the latter was sent to try to delay the march by mustering the people of Linlithgow and the surrounding area. Arran arranged his force of 2,500 men on the strategically important Pace Hill overlooking Linlithgow and the River Avon. Lennox, seeing the strength of this defensive position had to rethink his plans. 'Lennox intended to outflank and defeat Arran before Douglas could arrive from Edinburgh with reinforcements. Downstream from the town, the river was impassable but his scouts found a ford 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) upstream, at Manuel Convent. Lennox forced a crossing there and advanced on Arran’s flank. However, Arran saw the threat and placed his troops facing south along the ridge of Pace Hill. Lennox’s attack was across the Avon, over boggy ground and finally uphill, but he very nearly succeeded in dislodging Arran’s outnumbered men. However, time ran out for Lennox as Douglas' reinforcements arrived followed by the reluctant King James. Many of the Lennox men were killed either on the ridge or along the banks of the river Avon. The Earl of Glencairn was captured and Lennox himself was wounded. It was said that Lennox surrendered to his opponents but was then murdered by James Hamilton of Finnart. The location of Lennox’s murder is commemorated with a cairn that stands at the entrance to the Kettilstoun Estate. *The aftermath* 'After the battle, James remained under the control of Archibald Douglas until, in 1528, aged 16, he escaped from Edinburgh to join his mother in Stirling and assume the reins of government himself. Douglas and his family had their lands confiscated and he was forced to seek refuge in England. James continued to reign until his death in 1542.' All the best. Stay free. Rab 🍻 😎 🎲 🌠

The video on Hybrasil (sp?) was one of my favourites. I was surprised to hear it didn’t do as well as you would have liked. I’ve always thought your videos were very well done and well researched, so not surprised to hear you are well qualified to teach history. Great channel, great work. Thank you.

Thank you. Yes, sadly that one just flopped. If they don't do well in the first hour or two, the algorithm won't even really push them as I understand it.

So interesting to hear more about what goes into your wonderful work and how you found it. I'd love to hear more about Matilda/Maude and Stephen, and the childhood of Henry II, how the Civil War might have influenced who he became as a ruler. I loved your Cecily videos!

Great new video! I didnt really expect to go through all of it but it was nice to learn some of the behind-the-scenes info! I love your videos, and even when I dont expect to like them, just giving them a few minutes in you make them really entertaining! Keep up the amazing work but if it ever gets too stressful everyone will probably understand if you took a week or two off!!

I can hardly believe you had just started your channel during the pandemic. You're a natural and I'm so happy for you reaching the 100k mark! Congratulations! Sometimes when we get thrown off course, we end up finding an even better path. You are a joy to listen to (your accent is lovely!) and I'm enjoying all of your content (though the Tudor time period is my favorite at the moment.) Thank you and cheers to your continued success! - a US New England coast fan. :)
