If it were easy someone would have done it already. It looked a lot like work with a fair bit of danger. That being said, you clearly have what it takes and now can tackle the challenge with more experience and hopefully better weather. Quality educational entertainment! Thank You!

If you raise the anchor point of the kite a little and build a seat behind it you will be much more comfortable I think. I like this kind of adventure videos a lot.

Very brave of you guys I have to say, when I was messing with kite boats and boards 40 years ago, an hour was pretty crippling. Had some of my best sailing experiences on the Solent and along the south coast. You might have had more success if you had set out from Cowes about three hours before low water using the end of the tide and slack water to clear the Needles and the fresh incoming tide to carry you around the island and back to Cowes.

Looks incredible, well done all of you despite the bad luck with the weather! Do you think kites will ever be used on larger cruising boats? Thoughts on how it compares to sailing a hobie normally? upwind performance looked surprisingly good--you don't imagine a kite could tack, but shows what I know haha

@SamLight
@SamLight 2 жыл бұрын
yea the daggerboards help going upwind but you don't need them, we want to build a seat for the kite pilot to sit in so its easier to steer the kite for long periods of time, a mini spray hood would be nice as well!

Good idea. You can make your performace Better Up wind, locking your chicken loop's kite in right side when te kite is in right side and lock in left side when the kite is in the left side. For achieve that, maybe you need somethin like slider, and maybe 1 winch each side, to habe the control with the position that you gonna put the chicken loop. Let me knwo if your team try this experience. The fishers move the boats from the earth with one similar tecnique. Puting one linea in back side, and other in front side. I hope you undertand me.

Mate is there a reason you don't use a tiller extension? Would help to keep the driver away from the geyser that shoots up between the tramp.

Detected a lack of enthusiasm there about making the round again. Can't say I blame you after that grueling trip. But I imagine in a few days time the wheels will start turning again and the worst will be forgotten until next time. Everyone who pushes against the sides of the box feels like that. You know there's something outside the box and you just can't rest until you get there. See you on the other side mate.

Hi i was wondering if you could give some advice. I recently bought a 11.5m 2011 (i think) best kahoona kite And a 2012 9m fone most wanted bandit both with bars and lines. The kites themselves look structurally sound but im concerned about breaking lines or the chicken loop not working 'under preasure' they both work when tested. Should i replace them? And if so with what? Can i simply get new lines? Do i need to check anything else? Not a lot of people kite around me and the nearest kite shop is about 100miles away.

Are you new to kitesurfing? Generally it is definitely not recommended to go on your own unless you already have a ton of experience. So many small things can go wrong with big consequences. I would clearly recommend to learn with an experienced and certified instructor, and then have them assess whether your gear is safe. Since the user friendliness and safety systems improved a lot the last ten years. Personally, i bought two 2011 liquid force kite setups, and was taught be a friend with 7 years of experience who was used to indtruct in snowboard and climbing (point is: dont trust your life to someone who is not good at instructing). First 15 sessions i always went surfing with instructor to minimize tje consequences of the inevitable fuckups of learning :)

Sam, I love you videos. Super fun to watch. I have a Inter 20 and a bunch of kites and I want to try kite boating on it but once the mast is up it stays up for the summer It has triple traps and 3 sails, lots of rigging. But I also have a Hobie Tandem Adventure Island. Which would be much easier in every way since I can roll up the sail and take the mast down while on the water. I live by Lake Michigan. I just don't know if the Hobie is made strong enough to take the stresses that the kite would put on it. Do you know anyone who's tried it?
@SamLight
@SamLight 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure it would be fine. Theres way less stress on the boat with a kite, the center of effort is much kinder to the boat. You could put a kite on almost any boat, just start with a smaller kite to learn how it works

Get a bigger boat for three people. Get the helmsman to sit further forward so the transom is not dragging. Hobbies have very small hulls and sit low in the water get a higher boat. These changes will make the boat faster and less wet. also lower the sail control.

And to think, I just had an idea to use a kite on my 9 ft inflatable dinghy….then I found this video…so it is possible!! Righteous. The only thing I can’t understand …is how you jibed both directions…UNLESS, you had a wind direction change.
@SamLight
@SamLight Жыл бұрын
yea its great fun! It will work on your dinghy, however there will be more drag than the hobie cat and you need a solid point to attach the kite to on the boat. its really easy to gybe and turn downwind, not so easy to tack upwind...
