Exploiting Chrysler's reputation with a little knowledge is so much fun. In the 2000s me and a few friends had a side hustle of buying Chrysler LH Cars with "bad transmissions" from various places online, and only a handful of times they were actually truly bad transmissions

What was the secret repair you used?

@@asdf89sdf The most common issues were the output speed sensor. Sometimes it only needed a solenoid pack replacement and a clean dose of ATF+4. A few times it was just the solenoid pack harness. They had a bad run of valve bodies in IIRC it was like 2001ish, while expensive to replace, still cheaper than a rebuild. Once they had the bad reputation, anytime one developed any issues, most indie shops would just say "needs a transmission" either because they had no clue, or were taking advantage of people. You would know pretty quick if the trans was actually dead when you dropped the pan and the fluid was "chunky style"

It always baffled me how a car made on the same platform with the same engines (+diesels), an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, is a pretty reputable car, with known issues which are relatively easy to fix and they are non-catastrophical, and yet - here comes a Dodge Dart, a car which everyone hates

Those of us in the Broken Fiat Club FB group know that particular multiair failure pretty well. Probably way too many perfectly good multiair cars sent to the junkyard due to this issue. As far as the clutch kit, I wonder if they are assuming it is the same as a 500 Abarth? I replaced my Abarth's engine with one from a Dart, and seem to remember that the factory flywheels were slightly different. The cruise control disabling is part of the drive cycle diagnostic.

Oh my God! A Jake video. It has been almost forever ( well not quite, I do have a Patreon membership) Long before you and Tyler were born, the Dart I grew up with was a compact rear wheel drive model that ran from 1959 to 1976. They were twin to the Plymouth Valiant from 1967 to 1976. They were bullet proof. I do like the newer Darts. This one looks nice and runs and drives as well as stops. Big pluses. Best of luck with it. I see the Datsun is gone.

Glad too see you back! You owe Grimes big time! Fix the few EZ things that have the biggest bang for the buck. Sway bar bushings & end links. Flush the brake fluid and upgrade the brake pads. Replace sloppy ball joints. And the motor mounts. The body looks to be in pretty good condition. Have you every done paint contention? Much more time than money. Keep the videos coming. We see you more in passing on Hoovies channels.

The local Dodge dealer had these advertised for $13,000 new so I took a test drive, the highlight was when the salesman had me to a 30mph panic stop. I swear it was 15 feet at the most.

I just got a Renegade with this engine. Before driving it I opted to do a bunch of service items. Multiair filter, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, plugs, serpentine belt, oil, coolant, etc. It's surprisingly easy to service this engine. The timing belt would take no time at all except to install the alignment tools the vacuum pump has to come off, that took the most time. I also bought 60A liquid urethane and filled the motor mounts which were obviously broken. Glad to see the clutch isn't too major of a job.

Urethane infill is kinda my plan for the torque mount. They’re about $300 new because they’re specific to the 6mt

​@tylergrimes1256 I used Smooth On Vytaflex 60. If I was doing it again I'd probably use Alumilite Flex 50, only because right after I bought the Vytaflex, alumilite sent me a 20% off coupon 😂 It was really easy to do and came out great. I didn't dye it so it's cream white, not that I care.

Great to see more on this Dart...I commented on the Wizard's video as well 😉! I've owned two of these "PF" Darts: a '14 Limited (bought new; totalled at 2 yrs old) and a '15 Limited (sold to my son). Both were great, but as second & third model-years, they had the 2.4L/auto...plenty of power. BTW, my first also replaced a BMW---a dying '97 E39 540i with 225K which was costing >$400/mo out of pocket to fix myself. As far as what to do? Clean it up and make it nice! A good detailing, fresh front bumper cover and the routine maintenance stuff already discussed; you'll have a great daily driver that will only continue to get more uncommon. So many of these seemed to get ratted out...unfortunately, they didn't sell well, so FCA pulled the plug in 2016...just as the design was maturing .

I was actually in the whole Darts of Kansas, Darts of Oklahoma groups back in 2012-2015 or so, and there's a lot you can modify on these with the 1.4l turbos. I did intercooler pipes, cold air intake (best mod for BOV sound), poly motor mounts, short shifter, and some exhaust mods. This is making me want another one, damnit.

1300 for a nice runabout. I like this. I had a fully loaded limited when they first came out and was pretty pleased with it. The 1.4 made it feel and sound a bit like it's Abarth sibling. A comfy raucous sedan. I only had a couple issues related to build quality. Fuel door, driver seat was a bit lumpy. Otherwise good.

Same engine that is in my 13 Abarth. Not true on the oil filter needing to be OEM, I have used parts stores house brand filters and even Amazon filters in my car for 4 years/37k miles and never had an issue with the Multiair brick depriming. Most important is to use the correct oil from a quality brand. Pennzoil is what came factory and is still recommended by MOPAR. This is a place where auto parts store house brand should be avoided. Hope to see more of this car from you as many things will cross to the Fiat and could help others fix their car.

You’d think so, but my previous 1.4 car would throw and absolute fit if I used anything but OEM filter. Also… they’re rated for 10k miles why not spend the extra couple bucks

@@GrimesGarage I don't like the 10k mile interval set into the computer in the first place, later ones got it reduced to 7.5k. I do 4.5k between changes as I try to track or autocross the car monthly, sometimes multiple events per week. Oil comes out black but the filter has never shown any problems.

If Grimes is going to daily drive this and he has a 60 mile commute, I would not modify the exhaust in any way. Exhaust drone is annoying outside of driving to and from the local bar. A couple of hours each day would get old, quickly. I would do things like fix the suspension all the way around. I would put better tires on. I would also have an alignment. Then things like ensure the brakes are perfect, to include fluid replacement. I would also replace the coolant. Other than that, drive, drive, drive.

I like the car. My mom's first car was a Dodge Dart, of course it was one of the original ones. But as for this one, I would definitely address the suspension stuff next. Personally, I would've done a lot more stuff inside the transmission such as the flywheel, thow out bearing, and the rear main seal. But that's just me, I don't doubt that they're still in good shape on this car. I'm kind of like the car wizard to the extent that I'm very paticular about my cars and I want everything to be up to snuff so to speak. In terms of how far you should go with this car, I would say that all the mechanical stuff should be done first and then perhaps then you can get into some performance modifications or maybe you’ll want to address some of the cosmetics and body work issues. Depends on what route you guys decide to go. I do see a lot of potential for this car in a lot of different directions, and now it's a running and driving car you can drive and enjoy it for a while now. Looking forward to seeing the Dart again in the future.
