Zelda games usually have death counters. In the original NES Legend of Zelda it is a true death counter, because if you use up-A to go to the save screen and quit it does not count it, nor does it count a death if you select 'retry' after dying - only if you die and continue. In Zelda 2, however, it is a game counter, so it counts a game when you up-A to save as well as when you game over. In A Link to the Past the counter is hidden until you complete the game, and in the credits shows you the overall count as well as a break down count for each dungeon (this one may also be a game counter, meaning it counts even if you just save and quit without dying, but my memory is uncertain on that aspect). BOTW does not have a death counter because there is no option to continue after death, selecting 'continue' is the same as selecting 'retry' in the original, so you start from the previous save, although you may quit and then manually choose which save file to load.

I learned this just a few years back when the number became much lower to none as I learned to capture fairy’s in a bottle which I was sadly deprived of know when I was a child. Along with “Save States”. So we always just died and started over when I played growing up which made us better players. But the fairy in a bottle was life changing for me. I thought the number was some kind of progress counter until I realized with a lot of progress it still being low. Cool feature to flex on your gamer buddies. This game is timeless!!!!!
