Loopop, dropping in here from "the future" to say thanks so much for this great review and so many others. After KZbin shopping for a sampler /groovebox / nerve-center for the last two months, watching and rewatching your videos - I bought this machine and will no doubt refer to this video often as I get underway with it. For me, it came down to this, a Digitakt, or the MPC One. Ultimately the Blackbox's UX, lean form factor, and very adept use of modern day computing power won the day.

After watching your very intuitive video, I purchased it using your Reverb link above. I've been using a myriad of devices to load samples, and other devices to create weird jams. This fits perfectly above using the Novation Circuit or below a PC DAW for me. I know there are other devices that a similar, but they are either too advanced (electron) or do not fit into what I need (Roland 101, 707). Love the song mode, and chromatic feature. I've gathered samples for well over 25 years and a computer screen just wasn't cutting it for me to load them. Thanks again for the awesome walkthrough.

It's like an enhanced sp404 with multiple ins out, and the sequence options are really quite intuitive and easy to use. I have the 1010 Toolbox. Entering notes can be a bit of a pain sometimes. I'm considering a stylus because I have big fingers as well. What 1010 really gets is making access to parameters quick and intuitive. The learning curve is always very low and no damn hidden button press combinations that's the bane of a lot of digital modules. I think on the forums 1010 alluded that some of the features from BlackBox might wind up where they can in the Eurorack modules. I believe they stated that the processor in BlackBox is more advanced than that of the Series 1 and Series 2 boxes. I'm holding off for BitBox II. They'll want to do something in Eurorack with this.

Hello Miguel, I have an AKAI MPC LIVE, but for my taste the piano roll sensitivity is not good, this is the main feature I need. Is the 1010 piano roll sensitity and workflow good? Have you had the occasion to compare it to the MPC LIVE?
@miguelgjesus5 жыл бұрын
OldSkool Synth Boy I’ve had an MPC controller before, but the one that was mostly a controller, so the piano roll was in the software, so in the laptop screen. The Blackbox has a very small screen instead. Sure, you can zoom in to see and input the notes, but it’s not really something I use that much unlike you would in a MPC. Think of the Blackbox as a step above the Electribes but not trying to be an MPC. In the end I use it the most to load loops and immediately sync them to the tempo while triggering other drum sounds

@noiseworks6 ай бұрын
you've got 16 stereo samples, any of which can be multisamples. Each pad can contain 64 individual samples (mapped as a multisample) per pad, up to 80 per preset. it's really not a hard 16 pad limit (albeit not the most elegant workaround to always implement)

@loopop Very thorough review of features. I appreciate all that you do! There's just one feature that you briefly touched on, I need more direct answers, and it's hard to find any info, all related to polyphony: Can you use the blackbox to play looped samples, with polyphony, from a keyboard? (think, like the fairlight AARRR1 voice sample) I think your answer there was 4-voice polyphony max per "Pad". So as a result, I'm wondering: Can you map the keyboard range of notes to be, say 1 octave per pad? AND THEN map the same sample across four pads, so you'll end up with 16-note polyphony of the same sound when using a 4-octave keyboard? Lastly: Does it respond to sustain pedal for this kind of playing? Or pitch bend/mod wheel data? The reason for asking all of these questions is simple: In 2019, we are **STILL** missing an Akai S1000-equivalent sampler for keyboard players. You know: velocity layering, looping, corss-fade looping, ADSR, and so on. Hoping this one will do the trick, or come close to it.
@loopop5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks or the kind words. To your question, you can't create that kind of mapping on Blackbox (octave per pad) but if your keyboard can create splits which each octave gets sent to a different octave, then sure. For example the Novation SLMK3 can do that quite easily

Hi ... I would like to buy a sampling sequencer. I tend between Polyend Tracker and the black box. My main use will be the sequencing and sampling of Analogsynths. Now the question is which of these two boxes is more flexible in external sequencing?
@tysoncarlson67784 жыл бұрын
Blackbox allows for poly midi sequencing in a conventional way and 16 channels of, tracker 8 tracks divided up between midi or samples. Tracker includes a midi chord mode for sequencing chords within one track. I have both the blackbox and the tracker and I find the tracker a much more creative full function box, I actually find the blackbox kind of clunky and the user interface leaves a little to be desired IMHO. Tracker also has a lot more effects and mangling abilities. Tracker has a midi timing problem now said to be fixed in an upcoming update. With blackbox it kind of seems like midi sequencing was added as sort of a half assed afterthought and so far support is terrible!!! Neither in my opinion are the best midi sequencers. Something like pyramid would be best. Maybe a synthstrom deluge which does pretty much everything very well.

I tried it at Superbooth. Excellent sound quality and the USB host feature makes this a very interesting box. After power-up, it loads the first preset in the list (in alphabetic order) if I understood correctly.

Excelent as always. I use the Bitbox made by the same company and i love it. Wish they made something like this for eurorack. This is a mix of their modules but all in one. Great idea.

Yea still hesitating to buy either, would love to have the sequencer in the eurorack version.

Forgive me if I missed it, but some video showing the clips/loops being triggered by a midi keyboard or midi foot controller would be great if this is possible.

Thanks fir this movie, excellent. Is the Blackbox exactly the same product as the Bitbox? firmware, functionnalities

Question: can this be used as a backing track device with Song Mode, playing section of long samples (audio stems), with an output to headphones (with click) and one to the house? Exporting from Logic ProX stems into the unit would be nice. In essence I would just use audio material, no midi devices connected).
@loopop5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Technically though song mode isn't needed for this. Just load up your stems into pads and start them at the same time with a simple sequence.

@@loopop nice. And can the metronome be selectively routed to the headphone output? Or say load a metronome track as audio file wich is only sent to HP?

I am looking for a sample sequencer to pair with my Novation Circuit. I want the Circuit for it's awesome Synths and highly performable drum machine. However the circuit is not great for samples other than one shots. I think this would be a perfect addition with many other possibilities once I get additional gear. Any reccomendations or concerns from the music makers out here? :)

The live looping part... How do you go about having it start immediately after recording. I have to manually trigger my loops after recording. Is there a setting I can change?

Perfect. As always thanks for the spot on review.

O man the chopping 😭 this thing looks sick

Would have been nice if you could use the recorded CV voltage to modulate a sample on another pad - like an LFO maybe? Maybe LFOs will be in future updates. I love this thing.

does anyone know if it is possible to send midi to a external synth and then live record the synths audio? i want to use the black box as a loopstation basically but also as a controller for external gear at the same time...

Is it possible to edit , chop, quantize or warp longer samples on blackbox? Tempo matching you know. For instance: A project is in 120 bpm and I load a 40 sec long 140bpm or 80 bpm sample let s say and I want to fit in ... so tempo match or quantization or warp kinda thing. Thx

Hi! I really like the opportunity of live-quantized-recording-and-sampling an audio signal on this guy. I've been looking for such a feature. Does anyone know any other devices that are capable of doing that?

Is it possible to send sequences from another sequencer, let's say Hermod? I mean not just clock signal, but some patterns to trigger sample and loops on blackbox?

Hi, whats the longest in minutes you can load a Sample? Can I use this machine to play some audio stems (Entire 5 minutes or more songs) I premade on Ableton? If I am using a groove box it is possible to sync the samples with the tempo of my external machines? Thank You!

Q: How many total tracks (mono) can you jam out of this box? 3? 6? 6+headphones (7, 8?)? Thanks in advance. I'm looking to model Biggi from GusGus live set (see 3 part video) and have the 16 channel mixer--can't afford $/size of a MPC ... want something smaller. Thanks again! Highest quality vids!
@loopop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 6 mono - headphones are a mix if I remember correctly

10 minutes into the video and im already obsessed with this thing!! As someone with an affinity for the smaller tabletop hardware sampler workstations (the Electribe sampler being my favorite, flaws and all) this is almost like a dream unit for me.

Can you do auto sampling or extend the keyboard beyond the 16 pads? (Not using one sample)

Thanks for the detailed review! Is it possible to record or edit live-loop while it’s playing?
@loopop5 жыл бұрын
Yes - you can record a loop live and edit it in real time if you like (though who knows what would happen....)
