I'm Norwegian, and the general consensus abroad is that our penal system is very mild, as "you can only get sentenced to a maximum of 21 years". While this is technically true, you can also be sentenced to something called containment (forvaring), which basically means that the prisoner can be kept so long as he is deemed a threat in danger of repeating his crimes. Many foreigners are outraged over the "mild" sentence our terrorist Anders Behring Breivik got, 21 years + containment, but this means in reality that he's gonna die in prison, as he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell to be evaluated as rehabilitated. Containment spaces are also not as nice and comfortable as the ones you guys think we have.

I saw this pop up on my feed, and I was like, "Yeah, American prisons are going to be a big part of this video." I was not wrong. Luckily, a lot of cities and states are looking at reforms to reduce the prison population and have even seen some successes. Hopefully this trend continues. Also, my home state of Ohio is where the Ohio State Reformatory is located. This prison shut down back in the 1990s, and was then used as the filming location for the greatest prison movie ever, The Shawshank Redemption, as well as numerous other films. Today, you can visit the prison as a tourist attraction, where you can get tours from former inmates (highly recommended), see old movie sets, and have plenty of opportunities to interact with the spirits who are said to reside there (I've two videos of my own where I communicate with prison ghosts). Please do 101 Facts about: 1. Sailor Moon 2. Ballet 3. King Arthur 4. Lucifer (TV series)

The drug war will keep prison populations bloated as designed. Its all going to plan, the same people who own the prisons import the drugs on a massive scale, then wholesale it to all the cities. Its like getting rich off both the junkies and the general population through taxes at the same time.Plus they can jail any competition, and make a cut of the taxes spent jailing said "Unauthorized" competition.Its genius but immensely unethical.

In Canada, inmates who have received a sentence of 2 years or less, as well as those who are being held in remand while awaiting sentencing, go to 'jail'. Anyone doing federal time (which is 2yrs +) gets sent to 'prison' (Jokingly aka 'Club Fed', in British Columbia).

Apart from the right to leave, prison inmates are denied such rights as keeping personal possessions, especially in the United States, United Kingdom and a few other countries. Inmates in these countries are typically only allowed to have jail issued items and a few other things, usually eyeglasses with clear lenses ( tinted glasses are not allowed in most American jails, except for medical reasons, and even then, rarely ), medical equipment, and a few other things. Inmates also are stripped of freedom of speech, and others that citizens outside prison enjoy.
@leonessity2 жыл бұрын
I believe in Canada, our inmates r able to vote and access many programs that aim to reform, whereas in the US, more emphasis is placed on the punishing of their inmates. It seems as though American inmates are stripped of much of their citizenry, as much as they are stripped of their dignity... And therein lies the great debate- Punishment versus reform. Neither one appears to be the absolute answer in dealing with criminal behavior, so onward the debate continues... Treat them like animals, or train them not to be. What a dichotomy...

@CashelOConnolly5 жыл бұрын
Rubbish! “At her majesty pleasure” has nothing to do with treason! It was used after the death penalty was abolished for such crimes so heinous that a life sentence wasn’t enough. In other words it meant you were going to stay in prison for the rest of your natural life

jails and prisons are not quite the same things. Jails are usually smaller short-term facilities housing not yet convicted offenders as well as those convicted of lesser offenses. Once they have been convicted they are transferred to prisons and become inmates.

I think a better example of "egregious" internment camps can be found in many parts of the world. For example the USSR, China, Cambodia, Japan, and Germany. The Japanese internment camps in the USA during WW2 do not compare at all with truly "egregious" examples.
