Siddis: In It For The Long Run | Unique Stories from India

The African community that is India's hope for an Olympic medal.
The Siddis are a community that migrated from East Africa to India between the 15th and 19th century. In 1987, the Sports Authority of India set up the Special Area Games program to scout and train members of the Siddi community to perform as athletes for India on the international stage. Despite the glory they have brought to the nation, the Siddis have to battle racism on a daily basis, often being treated as outsiders in the country that they have given their everything for.
The Siddis have now settled primarily in the states of Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. They came as merchants, sailors, slaves, and mercenaries, going on to even become rulers. Today, they are India's hope for an Olympic medal in Track and Field.
101 Traces is an ongoing effort to bring to the limelight stories from dwindling or forgotten communities that are a part of the melting pot that is India's cultural landscape.

I'm shocked and completely left speechless of the revelation that there is an African community living in India recognized as Indian citizen for such a long time and I knew nothing of it. Previously when I saw an African descent person in local trains or other places, the first thoughts that came to my mind was that they were either tourists, employees on visas, refugees, illegal immigrants, etc but I never thought they could be a fellow citizen of India. This changes my whole perspective on them. It is good that I came across this video today or else I would have been left in the dark, Ignorance is definaely not a bliss in this case. Very much excited to see Siddi Communtiy representing India in sports and other platforms, I will definitely cheer you on and spread more awareness about your community amongst my friends and family circle.

You study abt them in anthropology and not in usual school text books. Its been proven well scientific that siddis are genetically close to african and south indian population. An admixture analysis also proved that genetic admixure is more than 50 % in them followed by south indian.

Why is that? Why do darker skinned Indians bleach their skin?? My coworker is Indian and she said its BIG business in India, all the skin whitening creams. That was the first I heard of it when she was constantly talking of shame of her darker skin. It offended me bcos I am a caramel skinned Af.Amer woman and I was like "whats wrong with dark skin...why the shame...u are beautiful the way u are!". It's sad, really. To be ashamed of the color of ur skin... SMH. Terrible.
