"Do not look at the basket, look at the fuel pod". Wow! Huge thanks, super simple yet very effective tip, applies to all aircraft I've tried it with. Managed many contact almost effortlessly in a few minutes, while I usually wouldn't manage one properly in about 30-45 minutes of frustration and usually would just ditch trying to refuel altogether.

Air to air refueling is one of the most frustrating thing to do in an aircraft. That's why as a RIO I will kick my feet up and relax while my pilot does all the annoying work lol

Actually, the RIO has a better line of sight on the probe compared to the pilot. So your chauffeur would likely appreciate you calling corrections if they get out of sorts.

Very great tutorial. Not looking at the basket is a hugely important tip that I should have deduced from real life experience in very regular planes. When landing, the last thing you want to do is look at your touchdown zone when you're crossing the threshold. It's a good way to screw it up. Instead, you should transition to looking toward the far end of the runway and I almost defocus my eyes because peripheral vision is what's going to help you feel your actual height. This is especially important to force yourself to do at night when your landing lights give you a nice little lit spot to stare at as you flare late and bang it on. Or I can blame my shoddy refueling work on my Logitech joystick.

Great video. You make it look easy. My time flying A2AR practice in the Bug, assures me it is not. Something's just jumped out at me about the Cat. Shouldn't the B variant (or more aptly, the A+ variant) have a combining-glass HUD? -and not the windscreen projection like the standard A? (Hoping I'm wrong and someone from HB doesn't go "DOH! Delay the release...")

Yes, you are correct. Initially, the upgrade was the more powerful engines. After I posted that question I did some more research and uncovered evidence that the B model also had a later upgrade which included the fitting of a split-glass HUD. This happened in the late 90s and therefore after the date at which Heatblur's F14B is based. TLDR Heatblur got it right. :)

Thanks for making these videos. I noticed that you have a clear view of the refueling pod throughout the process. My view in the cockpit is too high and I lose view of the pod long before contact. Did you adjust your default view? The handle on top of the canopy blocks my view of the pod. Not being able to view the pod makes things a little difficult when judging lateral spacing.
@EnDSchultz15 жыл бұрын
Don't know what control setup you use, but I add a keyboard modifier to my view control (Which I have to manage with a directional switch) that causes it to slew rather than rotate. So I can move my view down when refueling for a better view up and ahead.
@GunSlingerAUS14 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I'm practicing the Tomcat with KC135, and I noticed in your video you dropped seat height to see the fuel pod. Did you just use the keyboard shortcut for seat down to do so, as it seemed very quick and accurate. I'm trying to figure out a keybind on my Virpil Throttle to do the same, but it's a much slower seat movement. Any ideas? Btw, great video! Thanks from one rather frustrated wannabe Tomcat pilot!

Ok, Mav makes this look easy. And if you're like me (a DCS MO-RON!!!), "a li-il beh of practice" means, A LOT of practice in the Tomcat! You will practice your closure rate to the tanker ("Is that guy speeding up and slowing down???"). Lock the tanker up with your ACM radar, "Tie up" to establish your closure rate. You will Practice your proper trim. The Kitty likes to fly 5 degrees nose high (on the pitch ladder) for level flight. I personally switch my HUD to LDG to see the flightpath marker and more "rungs". Using all of Mavs wisdom, I place the 10 degree rung just above the basket and drive in. When you can let go of the stick to grab the mouse and call "Ready pre contact", and the kitty doesn't move, you have proper trim. Then you will practice the throttle. I split mine. I use both engines to get close to tanker speed, Left engine to fine tune my closure rate for contact (Then I will adjust my Right engine ONLY, to make that sweeeeeeet contact). I've been trying to A2A refuel this bird since its release. And for some reason, I always disconnect when I push the basket 10 feet too far forward (Oh yeah, there's that). To date, I now have 2058 tanker kills! I remember flying EF2000 for 3 hours trying to tank up before I realized, all I had to do was hit the basket with my HUD to connect. Brilliant or lame?

Interesting. In the real world, the bow wave off the front of the F-14 always pushes the basket slightly to the right as you get close. Just wondering if that could be programmed into the model. It certainly would increase the realism.

Air2Air refuelling is easy with the Tomcat?! ^^ Idk, maybe I am doing sth wrong. But for me refuelling the A10 is almost a piece of cake, while doing the same with the F14 feels very close to impossible. I am getting pretty close to the basket, but like 10feet away from it I am moving the stick like 1/10 mm too much and booom: Pilot induced oscillation.
