Patton always had a special place in my father's heart. In april 1945 he was liberated in Kassel by the Third Armoured Division. He was swept of the street for the Arbeitseinsatz in Utrecht-Holland. I had the privilige that he talked about his experiences with relative ease; a small goldmine of stories. This is a great veterans project.Thanx very much. Truly a great generation. Too very bad that there is not such a russian parallel initiative of the same magnitude. Maybe than a conflict in the Oekraine COULD have been prevented. With 25(?) million dead Russia needs a-at least psychological- clear doorstep. The US lost 551.000 soldiers;the Red Army 8.000.000.......

My own grandpa was too young to fight in WW2, being fifteen when it ended. His older brother did serve though. He was a Sherman tank driver. He told his family a story once of passing through a village in Germany where the villagers stood in the road to impede their progress. When they radioed it in their superiors told them to keep moving whether the people moved or not. Most of them did but others didn’t or perhaps couldn’t in time. Their screams haunted him for the rest of his life. War is hell.

I believe he was in the same division and unit as one of our family members. TEC 5 U.S. Army (tank operations). 3rd Army under general pattons command. Unfortunately Willard Eugene “Curly” Keller passed away at the age of 92, Nov 1, 2018 in Fayetteville Tennessee. Seeing these veterans tell their stories is amazing but also heart breaking. I serve my country, and I know i’ll never be such a man that these men were. And when Mr Keller passed, we lost a big part of us. The smile of a 5 foot 5 veteran of WW2 was one of the best smiles I’d ever seen. Occasionally I personally still weep over the loss of him. While for me it was early, for him it was right on time. He was tired. He’d been married for 75 years and lost his wife a few years before he passed away. I still remember all his stories especially the one where he met his wife when he was only 14. I love that man. And i learned more from him than a history book. God rest that mans soul.
