Even 30 years later they still are a great looking estate. The tourer body suits its perfectly.

Brilliant video! Certainly my favourite car on your channel. You’re spot on about chasing new things, it’s a false impression of happiness. Things like this lovely Rover are proof that less (seemingly) really is more, plus the fact that it is a time capsule back to a time when life seemed more simple.

A long time owned, reliable, older, cheaper car brings such a feeling of freedom, ease and contentment. I think more people realise this than many would think. And your Rover estate is such a great car to be completely content with. Suits you sir as 'that' TV show once said...

That's brill. Bill fits the bill with low bills and will still give you a thrill to see that grille. However, given the winter road treatment put down by the council, the question has to be asked: Will salt spills mean Bill's sills frill?

What you say about taking an older car on a big trip is absolutely worth it. Last winter at DMGRS I bought an LHD French market 214 Cabriolet, awful condition and over 200k on the clock. I drove it about locally for a bit and settled it would be fun to take across the water to Europe. So at the start of the year I drove it to the Eurotunnel and did a 2200 mile round to trip to Czechia and back! The car was pretty much flawless, a bit cold at times as the heater mechanism was a bit sticky. On the way back I did 17 hours on the road and the car took the punishment, the only actual concern I had was one of the front calipers beginning to get sticky in the way out of Belgium. Dousing it in various lubricating fluids on the Eurotunnel back seemed to do the trick for the last stretch! It was a great time and I'm very glad I did it!

What a great car you have Paul . My 2000 45 L serise which cost me just 700 euros in July has now done another 28,000 km in 7 months with just a a water pump and hose replaced. Truly Amazing cars. i am now on the look out for a diesel 600, the Rover bug has stuck

My 1st car was a love hate relationship, a Mk3 1992 Fiesta 1.1 Freedom in Moondust Silver. The 1st time I drove it after I passed my test it threw the fan belt, and then again and again and again. I never did find out what caused it but that is 1 car I'd happy to own again. The fuel economy was awesome too and cheap to fix, rust killed it in the end.

I agree Paul, not only the car, but the engine. My first car was a rough rover sd1 3500 V8 manual. I now have a 1996 Volvo 850 T5 auto estate. Love the bloody thing but, if it was the diesel, for me the love would be gone. My T5 is like living with a super model that is an alcoholic 😊 you just couldn't let her go. It costs me a fortune in fuel,but I just love the look and the sound of that 5 cylinder petrol turbo. Like hoping into bed with the super model, you never get fed up with that.😂

Great video paul , that's why I drive my estate , for most of the reasons you mention plus it's unique, just like yours . Going back to a previous video , 3 years ago I wanted to get another estate , but Mrs scrotter advised against it , that it turns out was a wrong move , I could have got this estate moved my other one on and made a profit. Oh well that's the way it goes I guess . At one point I wanted to drive my estate to Italy 🇮🇹 , if it keeps going in a couple of years I may well do that , dreams of travel and freedom you can't put a price on it .

I like that little car. I didn’t know Rover used the pug diesel engine, I had a Peugeot 205 STDT that I wish I’d kept, it was nippy and cheap as chips to run.

Even the clock works. Does it work like clockwork? I know what you mean about some cars you just bond with. I bought a Micra K11 for £225 in 2006 and, apart from the heat shield falling off the exhaust, it provided 12 months of reliable shoestring motoring. Base spec brilliance. If you take the Rover on a Scotland trip and come anywhere near Aberdeen, let me know. I'll buy you your tea

Eh up duck, do what I did with my first car, a mk 2 fiesta. I wanted it to be an xr2 but couldn't afford one, so obviously I got a tin of black hammerite and painted a body on to the one I had instead, from 20ft it looked good.

Loving the scenery, mind you since I live in the same place I'm biased. I remember the draw of all them 90's Rovers was the Honda tech. My boss got a H reg 41(6?) and I took it out on an errand on the 1st day he got it and it had like 110miles on the clock. The pungent smell of new plastics, compared the the musky damp smell of my rotting Opel manta :-/

I have yo say that this particular Rover Estate is the one that appeals to me most, I like slightly tatty doer uppers I like Rovers I like diesels, this ticks all boxes. Cars that are worth real money mean I see real money and would rather have that. Cars thar owe me nowt and are worth only slightly more me all day long. Long may it remain a Mustard motor.

How would it compare to a mk3 golf variant td, given its similar fuel economy at 55mpg?
@begachka14 күн бұрын
Good question - what is it about Rover 418 tourer that is so appealing? Ride and handling imho. Maybe that's why you feel you could drive through Asia and on through Canada etc - because it's forgiving to drive. A Golf tdi is not although it would give you similar performance & economy. You might get similar ride/handling from a jag xj but at less than 30 mpg there would be much incentive to dispose of your money in other ways. 418 economical enough to keep your wallet happy and ride/handling/seats adequate to keep your rear end happy.
