I forgot to show how you switch the 10 Mhz Input / Output: Press Utility, RefClock, to select the desired clock type.

I've had a gpsdo for some time it's fascinating to see the lack of drift on the ocxo in my hp frequency counter, less than 3 mHz (0.003 Hz) in nearly a year!

They are likely clearing them out for a new model release from Rigol. The DS4014 is at least 7 years old from what I've seen. Has Rigol been keeping firmware up to date?

Excellent video on the need to use a 10MHz reference on your measurement equipment.

Every 2 (or more) Channel Oszilloskop has a Reference In! Its the Triggerpoint from the other Channel! Apply your signal to Ch1 and your gps10Mhz (or gps1Hz) to Ch2. Set Trigger to Ch2.

I don't get why you need a reference clock input for the oscilloscope? Just feed the reference 10 MHz to one channel and trigger on it and the signal under question on another channel of the oscilloscope. You will see exactly the same waveform movements due to the frequency error of the investigated signal. Even better - use the XY acquire mode with the reference on one axis and the question signal on the other.

Comparing 2 unknown frequencies only gets you the difference in phase and frequency. You can't possibly know what frequency the internal reference is running at, how much it's off, how much it drifts over a given time span, weather that drift is up or down, etc. unless you have a frequency standard to compare it to(eg GPSDO) Edit: Oh, you're referring to the GPSDO 10MHz reference, not the internal reference, my bad XD

You could use the XY mode in scope. Its really useful.

How confident are you in your understanding of a Phase Locked Loop and how to design a really good one? and hacking around with the clock reference in your scope? This ain't no CD4046...

Question is: For what do you really need that extra 10 MHz reference input on a scope? On a counter - sure, on a spectrum analyzer - okay, but on a scope? Can't you just work with an extra channel/trigger? Martin's example works with an el cheapo two channel scope too, right?

@@salat well, i don't need it, just as a though experiment. Someone must be needing this if it's a feature worth paying extra.

@@salat I suppose it could come in handy for long captures and capturing temporally accurate waveforms. But yes in general scopes are not intended to be very accurate instruments, just give you a visual of what the hell is going on with a signal and maybe some FFT goodies.

There is behind you an equipment that looks like a clock with an lcd display. Can you tell me what equipment is that?

Thanks for a video Martin. Maybe I'm wrong, but what if you trigger on 10Mhz reference and use it as a reference on cheaper scope. It should work the same. Not as elegant, but should work. Please correct me of I'm wrong. Btw all scopes from Arrow are now gone :)

You really need that clock for this offer to make sense for this relative old 4 series. A Rigol 5 series MSO5074 (8GSa 200mpps depth,, 500k wfps) is like 920 and 990USD for the 4 channel, and these days they will throw the whole freaking option bundle in with the entry price and for free.. the DS4014 4GSa, 110mb depth, 140k wfps.. so they could likely not go higher in price, as the base scope feature of DS4014, is pretty much outshined by the 5series that cost a tad over 900 with full option bundle inc... so you really need the clock for it to make sense in today's market at this price around a grand. but always nice when you're looking for a certain product to find a steal, and scopes with this feature certainly don't hang on the threes.

4GS/s is nice but seems wasted on only 100MHz. I guess they mean 1GS/s per channel for all 4.
