Now, just so you know, us Brits are still using guns. The HMR took off as a 75yrd fox gun. Or for rabbits under 100. Some much prefer it over the. 22lr as the lightweight bullets tend to disintegrate on impact with anything, given their speed, as opposed to the. 22lr that tends to ricochet off of hard sun baked fields. For a small densely populated island ricochet is always a concern. This calibre has all those advantages only with an additional range advantage too for foxes, without having to resort to a. 223. Now, it's not widely known, but we can still have semi autos here chambered in '. 22 rimefire'. AR15 22wmr's are now becoming very popular, we're even making our own (checkout guncraft and T2 UK) 🇬🇧 Would be amazing if this blank got necked up to take. 22wmr bullets. FPS around 2350-2500 with a 35-45gr bullet. Ideal for 3 gun, civilian service rifle under 300 yards and good for foxing out to 180-220 yards given the increase in bullet weight. Cheap mass produced cases, ammo should be cheaper than. 223....... I can always dream....

I've shot about half a dozen farm coyotes from 150-400 yards, ranging from engine room shots to head shot. I live in an area where only rimfire is allowed and it's truly opened up my options for hunting.

@@MrJtin69 hey I hit a deer size head right between eyes at 200yards with hmr 20grain xtp savage b17 the bullet scrambled them brains but didn't pass through I definitely needa trade hmr for wsm as a Dailey driver rimfire all purposes all year lol these days academy sports will mail you ammo from online or any other websites so ammo availability shouldn't even be a thing in this century just the prices at the stores 😂

I have a Savage Bmag with bull barrel. The whole family loves shooting this gun, virtually no recoil at all. Wife loves it because of that and the kids love it because it’s got a nice bang, to compare to dad’s Rock River X1 in .223, lol. It’s a tack driver, inexpensive to shot, and just a nice step up from the .22LR. Great show/talk. Thanks

I’ve loved the 17hmr since I bought my first one in 2003 and I’ve shot the 17 caliber to death, but I can honestly say that the 17wsm does everything the hmr does but much much better. Not to mention for about the same price. I’ll keep my hmr’s but both my wsms have become my new favorites.

I just purchased a .17 wsm by Franklin Armory, semi auto. It's an awesome gun 4 coyotes & any other varmits. They recently revamped the gun. I waited over a year 2 get it. Out of the muzzle It's 3000 fps. Pretty good 4 a rimfire. I recommend it highly if your a .17 fan

Cool little round, they just don’t ever shoot like a varmint cartridge should. They always seem to throw fliers and never print consistent, hopefully they have gotten them shooting better. I have a 17HMR and was on the fence about the WSM, i reload so I went with 17 Hornet. The Hornet is by far one of my favorite cartridges.

Agreed on all points. Never could get the accuracy that I expected/desired. I also reload so I sold the rifle and ammo and invested in the Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter I 17 Hornet. Could not be happier with that decision!

My Bmag has a fluted bull barrel and it's one of my favorite rifles! Super accurate and fun to shoot! I've taken three coyotes with it so far and each one stopped in its tracks

Lots of public land in the states is limited to rim fire rounds. 17 wsm is the highest power round, at least mainstream that is available today.

Back several years ago I hunted with a 35 Marlin, down to a 22 Remington until people started buying all around and areas where my slugs were going wasn't safe to do. The coyotes moved in and there went my deer, wild turkey, and small game. So I got in touch with Sportsman's Guide where I have been ordering things for years, and purchased a Savage 93 17HMR, scope and a laser bore site and several boxes of ammo. Keeping it short, this may be called a "Plinking" round but a Coyote at 200 yards is dead if you can use a firearm at all. Now my deer, turkey, and small game are back. My neighbor set up a shooting range and bought the same thing as I have. And he has gone to Alabama and used his Savage on feral hogs. Thanks for the chance to say something. I own from an 300 Win Mag down to the 17 but use the 17 most of all. Keep it up guys.

I have a savage 17wsm that I've had to send back to savage 4 times now to be repaired it sucks... Love the cartridge and I've killed everything from hogs to squirrels with it but you got to be careful shooting squirrels if you want to eat them...

I have a couple 17WSM BMag’s. First one was the pencil barrel which was not all that accurate with the cheap plastic stock. Bought another with the SS target barrel with Boyd’s thumbhole stock, what a great shooter. Then bought a Boyd’s thumbhole stock for the pencil barrel and that made a huge difference in accuracy. Both get used for woodchucks with great results. The reason for purchasing the 17WSM originally was for night time Predator Hunting when we were limited to rimfire. We now are allowed centerfire at night.

Ammo is not cheap. Pressure is high for a rimfire, so it has report like a centerfire. I think it's a cool round, but for the cost and what you get performance wise you might well be shooting .223.

Totally agree. I’m not spending more money on rimfire ammo than I do on center fire. Cool round but ammo cost is a turn off for me. If I can shoot 223 a lot cheaper than rimfire I’m gonna shoot the 223 every time. Heck about the only thing I shoot these days is AK47 because ammo is cheap and 22LR. Will add a 223 bolt gun soon. I’d love to have some of the cool calibers like 204 ruger but I wouldn’t be able to shoot it much because of ammo cost. Screw that I want to shoot till I’m happy lol

It has one legal advantage for me which is that my county won't allow hunting with a center fire rifles even for coyotes. Stupid I know, but this little screaming 17 rimfire is as good as it gets besides a muzzleloader.

Main point missed on this cartridge is it is the most capable (non shotgun) fox/coyote or other longer range smaller varmint cartridge in areas with centerfire restrictions. Perfect for this specific purpose. That is why you would buy this instead of/in addition to 223.

Love this round I have a Bmag with a 6-24 power scope on it I've killed Prarie dogs out to 450 with it and have hit a 6 inch steel plate with it out to 600 yards such a amazing round.

This is a fantastic round on groundhogs. Especially potent and accurate is the 15 grain lead-free at more than 3300 FPS; 3400 in my B-mag. I am not a fan of the B-mag bolt action, but the rifle is accurate in a Boyds stock. You have to be very deliberate when running the bolt or it will not cock on close. Why would anyone design an action to cock when closing the bolt instead of when you open the bolt? Anyhow, I will eventually replace the B-mag with a Ruger if they are ever available again. Again, a fantastic rimfire cartridge.

My 17 hmr has honestly impressed me, hit a crow at 182 yards and blew it's back out.. at that range the little .17 gr v max was probably only doing 1350fps but had the energy to still expand and do damage. I'd call the 17hmr a 150 yard gun.

The brand that isn't mentioned is Browning who offers a 25 grain load , and though I still hear that all .17WSM is actually manufactured by Winchester , I have seen one youtuber shoot this into a half inch group at 110 yds from a stainless , heavy barreled Savage B-mag with the new factory synthetic stock ! I have recently purchased this same rifle which I hear now has the slightly improved , stiffer stock though it still just barely touches the barrel on the left tip of the forend . My first effort to correct this will be to use one drop of glass bedding at the right rearmost point of cantact to see if I can't pivot the barrel slightly to the right , away from the left side of the forend .

Much like Jim, I wonder sometimes if buying a 17hmr was a bad choice. However considering I can't see ammo anywhere for the WSM and the HMR is "good enough" for most situations, I don't regret it.

I used my savage bmag stainless bull barrel on 2 prairie dog hunts. Longest shot about 420yd. Used it for all the 200yd and less shots before breaking out the 223s, but also could easily reach to 250 - 270yd. No recoil, slightly louder than 17hmr, but nowhere near the 223! Ammo was $18ish for 50. Laid about 300 dogs to rest on the last trip with that thing! 😊

Have one, bought it when it came out. Have the Savage Bmag and ground hogs flop out to 300yds. Very accurate and fun and cheap to shoot. Dust my HMR all day long. However would call it borderline for coyote hunting.

I recently picked up a Savage B-mag 17WSM, heavy barrel/stainless, and I’m in need of a scope recommendation? Could you guys throw together a 10-20 minute talk with Ryan about the 6.5x55(swede)? I am contemplating building a chassis rifle in 6.5, and up here in Norway the 6.5 swede is found everywhere. I also have access to several thousands of once fired quality brass. Could you compare this to the Creedmoor for long range shootin? Is the added expense in my country by going Creedmoor worth it?

If you plan on hunting there is no real difference in the two but for long range the longer higher BC bullets of the Creedmoor will out shine the Swede I think 5 or 6 hundred and in not going to be much different but if u plan on going to 1000 I'd say go Creedmoor

Sadly, in May, 2024 it is almost impossible to find 17 WSM ammunition, and what's available is around $1.40 -$1.60 per round. I bought a Savage BMag without checking ammo availability because videos from a year ago said 17 WSM ran around $0.30/round and I wanted to practice on the cheap. Lesson learned: never buy a firearm without first checking on availability and price of ammo.

Need the .17 HM2 to finish out my trilogy collection. My HMR started out as a Walley World HB 93R17 in the birch stocked model that had eyebrow raising accuracy. Before a box of cartridges went down its bore the barreled action got dropped into a MDT-LSS chassis, the optic mounting system turned into an EGW rail & Burris Tactical rings (overkill but the $ would have gone to beer anyways) holding a BSA Sweet 17 optic. The trigger assembly got a Rifle Basix SAV-R upgrade. Accuracy went from eyebrow raising to jaw-dropping. Total cost... I dont talk about but I LOVE this pew-pew. The .17 "WHIZZUM" (just gave the item its name) is also a Wally World HB SS black synthetic stocked B-MAG. Kept factory stock but filled fore end with ROCKITE to stiffen (and boy did it). Fabbed a recoil lug from a heavy flat washer that rides in the barrels' middle aesthetics cut groove and bedded first 1.5" permanently affixing recoil lug to the stock. Again went with EGW rail (specifically made for B-MAGs), can't remember name of budget HD rings, and the BSA SUPER MAG scope. Using 15 grain LF ammo (3300 fps) hitting pigeons at 100 yards leaves a half dollar size hole in the on-side and no exit on the off-site. The on-side wing usually separates. It's common to see the pigeon lift 4-8" vertically on impact. Yeah, I need a .17 MACH II.

The .17 wsm is more powerful that you described in your podcast. In one KZbin the shooter was hitting targets at 500 yards accuratley! Although this is not in the .22-250 range it is a devasting little bullet whether you use the 20 grain v-max or the 25 grain v-max is better on larger predators (coyotes) with the right shot placement.

I have only used a 27cal rimfire nailgun a few times. One jobsite a worker had one that would bumpfire and autoload. You could drive 3" concrete nails at somewhere around 400rpm but it only had 25rd strips of blanks and nails. I watched it run away on a guy that didnt know how bumpfire worked, it was quite a noise.

17 HMR is easily a200 yard cartridge. It’ll kill coyotes at 150 for sure. Probably 200. The WSM is great but find ammo for it? They aren’t rocking and rolling with it. Sorry guys your wrong about that I haven’t seen 1 box on anyones shelves for over 4 years.

There’s not enough time and space here to list how many times this pea shooter has performed beyond expectation for me even out of the only Savage I’ve ever, or will ever for that matter, owned. Shooting paper for a consistent group is not where it impresses me but that little bullet finds hair and it is ruthless for a long ways out.

What do you guys think of the Remington .17 center fire . I love this one the big problem is keeping the barrel lands clean it fouls fast . It doesn't start dropping at 300 hundred yards and if you reload some Hornady there under five thousand feet per sec . But ruger got one I want the 204 thats a lighting bolt . But I love the hmr it retired my 1022 lr .

I hand load for my 17 remington 3900 to 4000 is easy all the Way up to 4300 fps about every 20 to 30 shots it has to be cleaned I also run a 204 ruger ever since they came about 35gr berger bullets it's boring accurate

When you look at the basic design of the b mag you understand the issues with accuracy. The rear action screw Goya into the trigger group that is held to the reciever with a dowel pin . Inherently inaccurate ! Too bad , love the cartridge

Why did Winchester develop round and never chamber any production rifles in it? It is superior to the HMR but the Savage B-Mag with the plastic stock strange action/bolt seems to be the only gun available at the time.

I would really like to know where you find the 25 gr ammo for this gun. I have 1, 000+rds of the 20 gr and have never found a box of 25 gr. I'm on a list but for the 25, but this is over a year out.

I was in the same boat as Jim. My solution??? Just exercise your American right….buy another gun in 17WSM. It was an excellent choice. Got a JARD in AR platform. I like taking head shots as much as possible regardless of the caliber I’m using just for the challenge, and the WSM puts the dogs down for a permanent nap with ease. Dropped 2 a bit over 100 yards in the boiler room because they wouldn’t stay still long enough to give up their head 🤷‍♂️ Any other critters are a good as dead

Savage had a cheap (rubber?) stock and it disappointed, so I put a bedded aftermarket laminate stock from (???) and it just went right where I aimed it. I now love it and think I will use it to defend my perimeter-a time that may come sooner than those people believe-those who think we can languish and without any effort remain citizens of the American Republic and who stupidly trust that our Part-y has the whole Truth!
