The 5 freeway is so dangerous and all freeways are super dangerous at night. It’s to the point I don’t go out anymore after dark because of how crazy drivers are now. This new generation is just completely unhinged.

I wouldn't be too sure about the world being a little "less safe" until after the toxicology report from the medical examiner comes back. If these fools were under the influence and contributed to their own demise, you ought to consider the world much safer with them gone. Unconfirmed reports about the fireman indicate that he and his buds were out drinking just before he decided to make the bonehead decision to take an ocean swim at 2 in the morning.

@@SalimAbdallah-ek7jq so you bought the same brand and type of vehicle that caused this crash and sent its occupants to the ICU with critical injuries? Wow. Plus, buying a "big SUV" is saying, "I wanna kill the other guy instead." This has been documented. Our ignorant pursuit of the "biggest and baddest" trucks & SUVs is sociopathic as well as ill-informed. (The Ford Explorer proved this point without a doubt.) The Jeep occupants are most certainly in the hospital BECAUSE they were driving a Jeep. Lots of power, narrow wheelbase and high center of gravity is THE WAY you create an unstable vehicle. And then when you DO crash your Jeep, you find it rates horribly in crash tests. Talk about bad choices! Oh and then drive at night at 3am with drunks on the road? Three strikes and you're out! Keith Bradsher's "High & Mighty" breaks down the farce that is the American pickup truck and SUV. Dangerous to others and their occupants, wasteful and environmentally stupid, they represent everything that's wrong with American transportation.

3am There's another factor to this event. Do not drive after midnight if you have the choice and value your life. This is advice given by the CHP. If you must drive, then do so with the UTMOST care & defensive driving skills! I dodged my fifth rear-ender a week ago when an asshole in a jacked up truck was swerving through traffic, speeding and then ran the red light. I saw him in my rear-view and moved out of the way before hit me.

It could have been any of those. I have seen every one of those driving that stretch at night, and low lighting. That’s a major travel corridor from San Diego, and lots of truckers late at night, I know because I used to drive that stretch late at night for years. And not a drinker, it was work and military related. One is supposed to be innocent, until proven guilty. "A chain-reaction crash killed at least three people..." When you phrase it like this, you're part of the problem. A crash didn't cause ANYTHING! A DRIVER OR DRIVERS CAUSED THIS CRASH THAT KILLED THREE PEOPLE!!!! When you utilize the wrong subject and/or use the passive voice, you excuse EGREGIOUS DRIVER BEHAVIOR and misidentify the actual responsible party(ies). Driver error, arrogance, selfishness, aggression, incompetence, distraction, impairment and other BAD CHOICES are what cause 99% of crashes. But the way the media portrays it, you'd think poor drivers are just helpless victims of an unfair world. With the scofflaw behavior I see ALL DAY LONG by drivers, drivers are NOT victims. They're entitled habitual law-breakers! This is what creates endless carnage on US roads, highways & freeways. When you tell drivers they aren't responsible, and these things "just happen," then no one accepts responsibility for them and thus no one makes the much needed changes to STOP THEM!

I live in Oceanside and often drive this road after 9 pm. It has been humid lately and the accident was near the coast. Fog might have been involved. Always watch for fog building between Oceanside and San Clemente and slow down accordingly. Even the posted 65 MPH speed limit can be too fast for safety here.
