Hello Ashlee. When I took piano lessons as a child, once I was able to play a piece, my teacher would always ask me to memorize it and play it by heart. It was easy for me at the time and I did not see the point. Now as a much older adult getting back into piano after decades of inactivity, memorizing a piece is a real struggle. I think this tutorial and your tips are very precious. Thank you.

An idea I came across some time ago was to photocopy your piece, then cut it up (with scissors!) into single bars. Scramble the paper bars up then put the piece back together like a puzzle. I've tried it and it's surprisingly tricky!

Yes and it works wonders! I talk about that in another memory tutorial!

I STILL struggle mightily with memorizing piano music. (I never seem to have a problem memorizing the vocal parts in the octavos my choirs perform, though!) I have to say that method #3 (Visual Memory) really helps me get it down cold, especially if I "trick" myself by picking random numbers and force myself to jump around the piece. Part of my problem is the sheer volume of music I have to prepare. I'm already thinking about back to school, and I already know that in December I'll have two choir concerts and a 4th grade concert to play for, something in the neighborhood of 18 pieces of music, plus a 3rd grade concert just before those in November, so another 7-8 pieces! It's a lot, and obviously I can't memorize every single piece, so I highlight specific sections where I know the choir (or students) are going to need my direction, get those memorized, so I can focus on the singers and not worry about what my fingers are doing.

Thank you for the link. I filled in the info and clicked the red button to reserve....and nothing happened. Doesn't seem like it went anywhere at all :(
