ETC is an abbreviation for Electronic Toll Collection. Its the system for collecting toll that is used throughout Japan (not only in Kyushu). If you're from Sgp/Msia, then ETC is the equivalent of ERP(sgp) and TnG(Msia). KEP is Kyushu Expressway Pass. It's a pass that u buy (for a fixed daily fee) that allows you unlimited use of the “major” expressways on Kyushu (only valid on Kyushu island and only valid on certain major highways, see KEP’s website for the map of validity). Physically, KEP is a card that is inserted into the car’s on-board unit (much like in Sgp, drivers insert their cashcard into their car’s IU). Typically only tourist are allowed to buy KEP. Its meant to promote tourism. Locals cannot buy KEP. Certain car rental companies (like Times Car Rental) will allow foreigners renting their car to add an KEP option to the rental. You will be charged based on the days of your car rental. When you’re driving in Japan (whether or not u are using the KEP), just drive thru the ETC toll gantry when u’re using the highway. If you’re using the KEP, the system will know and your toll will be waived (if u’re travelling on the valid KEP highways). If you’re not using KEP, then your rental car will already have a normal ETC card in the on-board unit and u will be charged the relevant toll fees. In this case, u will pay for the total toll fees (pay to your car rental) when u return your car.

Thanks! Yes, we did purchased the KEP. It was done thru our car rental (Times Car Rental). The KEP is an option that u could select when booking the car via their usual website. 🤓
