Yes, so sad that Roy is gone from our midst. Thanks to Gavin Browne for continuing to share the Corries' music with the world.

I grew up with the Corries and watched them live whenever I could, and there's no doubt in my mind that they're the best folk group ever and one I'll never tire of listening to even if it does bring a lump to my throat at times. Roy's premature death was a national tragedy.

I totally agree. Their live shows were brilliant and I'll never tire of listening to them. Likewise their music often makes me weep.

Can't believe I missed this on YT up to now, despite the fact that my Corries playlists is probably one of the most extensive. I have it on CD and listen to it all the time!

sorry, wea28. the comment wasnt intended to come up where it did, it was aimed at pome. i too knew them as it happens. knew them all my life as they were friends of my parents. roy taught me to play the guitar, and let me play his combolin! that was a long time ago, when i was young!

PORTREE is an anglicisation or a phonetic representation of PORT RI. The latter spelling denotes that a monarch had visited.
@qantas4015 жыл бұрын
its not a 28 string guitar. that was a different instrument. the sitar sound comes from the 13 sympathetic strings mounted above the guitar neck on roys combolin. incidently, thay are indeed sitar strings. his is also a bandurria, not a mandolin. ronnies has a mandolin on it.

I'm not sure if it's meant to be Flora = flower = best of Scotland's youth or simply Flora MacDonald, the woman who helped Charlie escape to Skye. Works both ways really, but to be honest I'd go for it being Flora MacDonald since the song refers to "Born here the lassie / To guide our prince free".

@Whisper-that truth-shss Try reading WIKIPEDIA; it has a photograph of Flora MacDonald's grave on Skye. I've seen the grave in person.

(George Weir) Green is Floodgary, Blue is the sea, Born here the Lassie, To guide our Prince free. Westward the wild wind, high runs the sea Heavin' in the shallop by Loch Lea Eig bay. I had but one love, Lass trim the sail, Ruin behind us loyalty as well. Come ye young Lassie, hold fast the helm The Long Ship is heaving by Loch Scavaig Bay Come wi' me Lassie, turn ye not hame Come where the wild wind is kind tae its ane. Pull hard my heroes, th' eagle to flee, Down by Loch Yuma, the tall ship runs free. Flora was taken, down by Portree Bound for the tower, and meebe tae dee.

abrham gebeyehu: Thank you for the lyrics; here is what I detect--In stanza 1, line 2, it is "Heavin' the shallop"; in the same stanza, line 3, it is "I had but one love"; in stanza 2, line 2, it is "The Long Ship is heavin' by Loch Scavaig Bay"; in stanza 3, line 1, it is "th' eagle to flee"; in line 4 it is "Bound for the tower, and maybe to dee"--or "meebe to dee".

Fantastic song, This was about Flora (the Flower) being taken by the English Government of the time. To die in the Tower of London . Not all that long ago. O Flower of Scotland , perhaps ? Maybe Scotland is about to Flower again ? Believe it and we can make it so. Our choice now.
