I am in the planning stage of my welded aluminum flat bottom jon boat with a jet drive build that is a copy of a 24x60 Gator Trax GT with a flat nose and I did the same modeling using a sheet of posterboard to get the hull shape just right. The perfect boat for hauling lots of gear into the Alaskan wilderness

I like the boat very much, I like the vlog very much, thanks for shareing. Just one note, I saw no floatation devices nor any put into the boat. I would jump on over to the local dollar general, or store that sells swimming noodles and cut to size for each sub flooring space, until it’s all full of the floatation that it will hold.

Thanks! I did look at using cut foam, or poured two part polyurethane, both of which I have in the shop. I didn't use foam because it makes it so much more difficult to repair later if needed. I have repaired a fair number of foamed hulls, and it's never pretty. For this one I pressure tested the hull and confirmed that there were no leaks in the hull or deck, and the airspace between deck and hull gives it plenty of positive buoyancy. I installed a deck fitting so its easy to check if I'm concerned that water might be getting in, and a garboard drain plug that I leave out when its on the hard so it doesn't collect condensation. I do of course have a lifejacket on board at all times when I'm out as well.

Thanks :) I think it took about 48 hours, but I was figuring out the design details as I went. I tigged the tie rails and handles, but most of the rest was all MIG. You could certainly do it all with MIG. Just make sure you don't leave burrs and sharp stuff that will snag your lines. This one was built with a millermatic 210 with a spoolmate 3035 drilled out for 3/64 wire, and a Lincoln squarewave 200 tig. I've since traded up the 210 for a Lincoln 350MP with a Miller alumapro XR push-pull, which is what I used on the 14 footer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIrcZ6V4lM14hMk

I did it in about two weeks, but I wasn't working full days. Also, I was working out the details as I went. Probably six full days if I was really going for it. I think it was around 1k for the materials, but I had most of them on hand. 2 sheets 4'x10' x 1/8" 5052, a 4x10 x 1/8 checkerplate, 3 or 4 lengths 3/4" sch40 pipe (6061) probably around 8 lengths of 1.5 x 1/8 angle, a length of 1.5" round corner square tube, and some misc bits. plus gas, wire, grinding disks, zip cuts, scupper plugs, ect.

Great build! That is a stout little boat. Where did you get the hull plans? I'm looking to build one next week, more for flyfishing than bombing around but I like that hull you built. Also, what tubing is the rails? Is that 1". I have my 5052 sheets on order from my local metal shop, but need to get the tubing also. Thanks for sharing, and nice job on the video BTW!

The hull I designed myself - that’s the graph paper model at the beginning of the video. the rails are 3/4” schedule 40 pipe, so about 1” OD. I am just finishing a bigger boat, and this one I slit the tubing and slid it onto the edge of the sheet, and stitch welded it. It worked really well, and looks sharp. Its quite stable and would make a great fly fishing platform.

On the new one I TIG welded approximately 1” of every six, inside and out. I considered fully welding it, but didn’t want to distort the plate unnecessarily. I think it worked quite well, and feels totally solid. I slipped the pipe on before pulling in the sides, but it made them quite a bit more difficult to pull into shape. Next time I’ll try putting the pipe on after. If you are putting a mid span rub rail or seat ledger make sure you stitch it on before fully welding in the self bailing deck (if you are doing one) to reduce hull side distortion.

What type of aluminum did you use? Im thinking 5052 or 6061 . Id like to build a 15’ with a mercury inboard sport jet.

I used 5052 for plate and sheet, and 6061 extrusions. The checker plate deck is 3003. 5086 is also often used for hull bottoms, especially on larger boats.

Hey! I live in Canada, where you don’t need a permit or anything to build it, but you do need to register it when you are going to use it. I believe it’s similar in the US.

Yes you can but that would add too much heat to it n may warp the alli these days they have pulse mig which allows you to add less heat hot cold welds
