Just yesterday I was working on my neighbor's truck and I hit a milestone! He wanted a tune up because his truck idled rough. I put it on the scan tool and determined that the MAF sensor numbers didn't look right, and the fuel trims were too far into the negative. I cleaned the MAF sensor and very soon after that the truck idled smoothly. I told him he didn't need a tune up. This means I am officially "not just a part changer!" I owe it to several KZbin mechanics, but mostly you! I've been watching at least 7 years.

My truck just threw a p166a after sitting in an airport parking lot for 3 days. I carry a OBDII dongle with me, and it didn't show any codes even though the (Ford ) "wrench" light was on. I got home about 1 in the morning and threw my Thinktool Pros on it. Nothing showed in the topology, but the code came up in the report. Interweb descriptions of the wrench light don't seem to line up with the code description. And the code description is clearly a circuit problem but it's throwing a P code. Guess what I'm doing this weekend? God I hope the connector isn't buried.

The first few times I jumped a circuit with a test light and didn't get it to light even though I knew current was flowing, like here, I scratched my head. Of course the light has a threshold that has to be met before the light will glow. In this case, it's not just the fact that only 5 volts are available. These systems use a moderate size downstream resistor inside the PCM to create a voltage divider circuit. That allows easy measurement of voltage and also it protects the PCM and 5V supply by limiting maximum current. The resistor is so much larger than the test light, all the drop is eaten up by that resistor, so with current flowing there isn't enough of a voltage drop across the test light to make it light. Putting it another way, with all that resistance in the circuit the test light doesn't have enough current flowing through its filament to make the light glow.

I also had P0446 on my 05’ GMC Sierra with the medium 4.8L and extremely low mileage. It was the fuel tank psi sensor and was able to reach in the wheel well over the frame rail with the wheel removed without dropping the tank and swap the sensor out and that fixed the problem. But before I did that removed the vent valve believing it was that just to find no issues applying voltage to the connector and the old breath test. That taught me like this good video that one code can set another code and once you fix the problem all the codes magically will disappear.

@@titaniumman_22 Instead of wondering what the point of my comment is, I'd like to suggest you should rather wonder about the point of you posting an American flag after every comment you leave anywhere... for what reason exactly? What is that supposed to tell us? Would the message of your contribution be diminished without you posting your national flag along with it? What does posting a national flag mean anyway? Would you find it easier to understand what the point of my comment was, if I had posted my national flag along with it? The point of my comment, I'd like to think, is clear enough based on my comment itself. You compliment someone wanting to work, compliment them on the job well done, and post your national flag along with it. That implies that you consider the identity associated with that flag with hard work and jobs well done. The point of my comment is that that's bullshit. Self-indulgent bullshit at that. Complimenting hard work and a job well done is something I'd be on board with. But then you choose to gratuitously exclude the rest of the world from that. Why?

As a sparky, I enjoy training apprentices, as long as they're willing to work and learn. Your boy McCoy seems to be absorbing the information... I learned, largely self taught from Haynes manuals, and trial and error, on older cars, with a lot less computers and scanners. Colour tune and timing lights, normal test equipment, meters and test lights, were pretty much all I needed. I guess, what I'm trying to say, is there's a lot to learn in car diagnosis and repair these days. There's a lot of expensive diagnostic equipment you need to do the job, unless you're a parts cannon moron, with more money than sense (for a DIY guy). Sadly, a lot of shops give your trade a bad name, using that tactic too... It's the same in most, if not all, trades. There's some shocking sparks out there. Teaching an apprentice how to use the tools of the trade, and how to solve the puzzles presented, step by step, is the right thing to do, and like you said, helps the ol' brain to retain the information yourself too. Keep up the good work.

Some years ago in Ontario the -drive clean- program was created. This meant cars had to be assessed every couple of years. Participating garages would run your car on rollers and measure various pollutants like NO, CO ... this involved a big investment for shops and a pain in the neck for drivers needing to make appointments. Eventually this approach was abandoned as the province realized that ODB systems were plenty good at monitoring defects. Now no inspections unless the title to the car changes. In that case a thorough go over is needed - everything related to clean running and safety. Holes anywhere in the body or frame or suspension is a fail. Still wonder what the shops did with all those service bays filled up with a dyno?
