@@miahconnell23 little trip round student loans, we can all go as tourists
@miahconnell23 Жыл бұрын
@@incription do you mean visit a different country (like a tourist) and obtain university education there ? This was suggested out loud to a group of us at Teachers College, Columbia Uni, NYC, during a class in late 2016- but nobody working professionally in education had ever said that to me or any cohort I was in, ever. Honestly. {community college to finishing at a state four-year & then a teaching cert + grad work at a private university afterwards, six and more years !! 2006 through 2012 !! } But in high school 1989 - 1992 nobody ever ever would’ve thought I’d go to college at all. Anyhow, the professor who said it had done a significant part of her graduate coursework in/ through a university in Sweden. If I get back into teaching I’m going to recommend this-even more than I used to. I feel that we older folks ought to ameliorate barriers we’ve encountered for the next generation coming up. The USA seems to have a significant number of cranky voters who opine: “I had to deal with massive debt with no breaks, so everyone else ought to as well.” I’m not sure that those of us with a “make things more bearable for the young’uns” mentality have successfully swayed any curmudgeons over into feeling or politically petitioning differently. Earning sub-subsistence in my teens, the thought DID occur to me: “it’d be easier to learn a whole new language and relocate.” Now I’m nearly 50 and I know with certainty that what teenage-me posited was correct.

@@miahconnell23 - British students know about student loans. Why wouldn’t they?
@miahconnell2310 ай бұрын
@@leftmono1016 it’s only in the USA where people take on a life-time of debt (specifically college / university loans) which cannot be discharged with bankruptcy. British citizens don’t become financially ruined from student-loans or medical debt, either. This, I’m certain about. Slightly less important-& I admit I’m less certain about this-are credit scores. Credit scores and credit check-ups are different in other countries: I’m not sure which countries have citizens beholden to Equifax, TransUnion, and the Other One, but I’ve been told that it isn’t everywhere. There exist a bunch of financial & social issues that US citizens might assume are omnipresent, but they aren’t: they are USA-specific. Life-long debt ought to be against the law, in my opinion. Certainly, in general, debts ought to be repaid. And certainly, in general, irresponsible spending ought to have consequences. But the current USA system is not good. It’s just an extension of “upper class people from wealthy families can go to university, and people from economically disadvantaged families cannot: even if their academic potential is high.” We’d all like to believe that the USA is a meritocracy, but all sorts of systemic issues get in the way of poor-folks advancing into more favorable economic circumstances.
