It is a way to redirect applications to a new Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), which is a string of characters used to identify a resource that would enable interaction with representations of the resource over a network using specific protocols. Basically, it's where the two worlds meet. It's an access point from one world to the other. This would make sense in the context of the movie.

The film technically begins with a tapped phone call between Trinity and Cypher which takes place between the Matrix (Heart o’ the City Hotel is probably where Trinity’s side of the call takes place) and the real world. We see the code, though, we’re not in either world, but technically straddling both. The film ends with Neo issuing a warning to the machines then exiting a phone booth right before flying off into the sky. It’s begins and ends with a phone call.

For the folks complaining about the repeat appearance of the phone book props as being nothing more than prop recycling ... it might be just that, but phone lines and the internet are key plot devices in the film for getting in and out of The Matrix. So the phone book props could be a part of that theme, but even if they aren't you lost what ... 10-15 seconds of your life on that part of the video :)

Good one, Rob - I missed the "phone" theme for getting in and out of the Matrix. I'm sold on that one. I wonder how filmmakers are able to get all these easter eggs into a movie. It takes a lot of time, thought and effort - and you have to answer to the people who finance the movie(s) and very likely don't care. Then again: I am a musician and always try to do a better job than needed. I (and I'm not the only one by far) try to sneek-in good stuff which the client doesn't care about and probably would have taken out if I talked about it (envy is unfortunately an issue with clients and people who pay). The reason is simple: bringing quality work into the world (to the best of my knowledge). This has nothing to do with pride, greed, feeling superior or beating the competition. It feels good doing that and seeing colleagues or bandmates coming up with great ideas (not self-serfing virtuoso noodling, but the clever stuff) who will be lost to most of the audiences, but the very few who spot these definitely will smile. It is very likely similar with filmmaking. I completely agree with the rabbits on tv beside/behind the girl who is a Dorothy/Alice reference. The rabbit, always looking at the pocket watch worrying about being late, is a major character. Also there's the "down the rabbit hole" reference when Neo is being offered the choice of the red or blue pill. It all comes together and I'm sure there's more. I remember the movie "Grand Canyon" where Steve Martin's character says: "All of life's riddles are answered in the movies". Well maybe not all - but a lot more than one might think. It's called seeking patterns where none exist, because the human brain is a pattern seeking machine. Thousands of dates are presented in TV and movies all the time. It would be more surprising if such a reference did not show up somewhere, just as the statistical odds of meeting someone with the same birthday at a party are much higher than most people realise. Also, in the US the time-size priority-reversed 9/11 is significant, ie. elsewhere it's common to write the smaller units first in order, day/month/year, so in the UK it would be 11/09/2001. Some nations write the year first, but that's less common. If Rob's observation about the end message is valid, then it could easily be more a reference to the US emergency 911 number. Either way, people are choosing to impose meaning because they want it to be there. All the evidence suggests the far more logical conclusion, that a bunch of ideological religiously motivated nutbags did the deed, and their followers continue to wreak havoc today. That govts and corporate entities might seek to exploit such acts for their own ends is another matter entirely, but to suggest the writers of The Matrix new the tower attacks were going to happen is just ridiculous.

Dunno if the Wachowskis borrowed the blue & red idea from Total Recall, but I'm pretty sure it comes originally from Greek mythology. When a person goes to the Underworld, they cross the River Styx (also called 'The Blue Waters of Forgetfulness'). There they exist as 'shades' unable to remember their former realities, or to comprehend their new existence. In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels to the Underworld in order to get information from the dead. As the shades approach him, he gives them blood to drink. This allows their memories to come back, as well as an understanding of their 'life' in the Underworld.

Back in 1999/2000 I discovered the THE MATRIX BOARDS on the Internet. It seemed to be one of the largest forums on the Internet at that time. Incredibly enlightening for anyone who was looking to expand his mind. All sorts of ideologies and theories being discussed there. After a while the entire board was taken down under mysterious circumstances. More and more I get the feeling that The Matrix was (used as) some sort of test to examine how the population would react to the events of 9/11. The Matrix is the perfect analogy for the world of deception we live in today, imo. Every line in the movie has significance to the current global NWO transformation. The Alice in Wonderland "follow the white rabbit" is realized when Thomas Anderson notices Dujour's white rabbit shoulder blade tattoo and accepts Choi's invitation to to go with them for a little R&R. The rabbits on the TV in The Oracles place are from Night of the Lepus (1972). Doesn't show any relation to AiW as none of the rabbits are white, nor does Neo need to follow any of them since he is where he needs to be, by following Morpheus. Plus, the newspaper's fake name is an age old practice in Hollywood. Chiefly, so the studio doesn't have to go thru the headache of paying for use of a trademarked name to use a movie or TV. Check out "Grease" on a tape or DVD before the re-released. In the diner, a COCA~COLA sign is prominently displayed in the diner, but in the re-release, it's blurred, since the studio didn't feel they should pay again for the rights of its use. This one is hardly noteworthy.

Well the script for the original Matrix took 5 years to write, while the scripts for the both sequels were a lot more rushed. Also, I believe the Wachowskis wanted the Matrix to be a standalone film and had no intention for a sequel, but were pressured into after the success of the first film.

Well I guess it's similar to "Back to the Future" which was meant to be a standalone movie. The sequels are O.K. ish but definitely redundant. There must be one more factor though at least: the sequels look and feel so much different than the original, which has a slight "indie" feel to it as well. Probably the "hacking order" and people involved changed dramatically. Yes, we humans try to find patterns everywhere - but many of the things here are definitely no coincidences. And yes: that girl levitating the old style building blocks had a strong Dorothy/OZ and Alice in Wonderland feel to her. Even her hairdo. Both characters enter an alternate reality. Cool thoughts! I think that the newspaper in #4, "The City Defender", is probably a reference to "The Chicago Defender", one of the most prominent African American newspapers in the United States. The filmmakers are originally from Chicago and there are many references to their hometown in the film, as well as to Black American politics. For example, the "Heart o' the City Hotel" from the beginning and end of the film is a reference to the famous "Heart o' Chicago Hotel".

Something else - Near the start of the film, Trinity runs away from an agent (Brown?) and then the other agent drives an arctic toward her as she is in the phone box about to exit. She puts her hand up against the phone box glass as though she were trying to stop the truck dead in its path. I always thought that Trinity thought she herself was "the one". Of course Neo shows how it should be done at the end of the movie when Neo holds his hand to stop all the agents bulletts, in the same manner that Trinity had tried at the start

Well, Full Metal Jacket was released on Sept 11th, 1987 in the U.K. & Ireland, is 116 minutes long, which lends itself to rotating into 911. Kubrick's THE SHiNiNG premiered May 23, 1980, which nicely nestles September 11 between a pair of 111 days. You have to love IXXI symmetry. EXIT & TAXI hide the 11, while 9's are harder, couched in Pontiac Grand PrIX's & names like LaCroIX. Kim Hunter died on 9/11/2002, & she performed as Stella in the premiere staging of A Streetcar Named Desire two days after the death of Aleister Crowley, December 3, 1947. Brando played Stanley Kowalski, a Stanley with two K's in the last name. Hunter's Planet of the Apes goes into wide release the day after 2001:ASO premieres. ASO's 4/2/1968 premiere is both a "42" & a Crowley inspired "93", 33 years before 2001. Surely John Lennon's death on 12/8/1980, 33 years & 7 days after Crowley's death is significant, being Jim Morrison's birthday, another singer associated with Crowley on album covers (The Doors 13). 9/11 conspiracy is legit. There is also another one in The Big Lebowski (1998): When The Dude writes a check, it's dated September 11, 1991, and while he’s writing it, George Bush can be heard on the TV in the background saying "This will not stand, this aggression against Kuwait..." Here: 9/11 reference in The Big Lebowski Both The Coens and The Wachowskis did know about 9/11. I cannot tell what they exactly knew, but they at least knew that it was gonna be the end of an era or something. Some conspiracies are true. This is one of them.

Hi Rob, I love your videos. I was wondering if you will ever re-upload any former videos. I love your Kubrick analyses (the Kubrick gold story and full metal jacket JFK video just to name a couple). If I can make a request, I'd love to see a more in depth look at The Matrix or Barry Lyndon. Maybe some of Scorsese's films. Either way, keep up the good work!

Zack Sisson Sometimes I do reupload one or two of my older videos, but only when I have a big upload gap due to new projects taking a long time to do. Many of my best vids will remain DVD only. It has to be otherwise ppl won't buy and I won't be able to afford to spend time making more vids. I will be doing an expanded Matrix analysis and Barry Lyndon. Just nor sure when.

Great video! What do you think Rob and guys about the « mirror glitch » scene? My take on it: Seeing Neo’s harsh reaction to the red pill (where the pill was a real choice for the first time in Neo’s life or a program the Resistance created to wake people up), it was impossible to wake him up in the sleep or by force by the Resistance. It was necessary for Neo to be conscious (to consciously choose the red pill) in order to trigger his awakening and pinpoint his real location. This awakening materialized through a glitch in the Matrix- for Neo had seen the mirror fix itself (it was a mirror - for metaphorical reasons, because it reflects Neo and shows something artificial but maybe also his true self, plus as one of the storyboard artists of the Matrix has stated- seeing the liquid mirror on the hand on Neo was the occasion to show many Neo’s reflections). But appart from these metaphorical and directorial decisions, the glitch could also be on a wall or anything else.

I know the scene. It's when Agent Jones (?) injects Morpheus with a silver fluid and Morpheus looks at him in astonishment. Smith is not paying attention and at that moment Morpheus turns back around. The scene is not explained nor is Morpheus' reaction addressed. The only person alive who knows the meaning of this scene is me.

The red in the lobby that says *ART ATTACK*, i think this could mean *NEO* is short for or changed slightly from *ART ATTACK* host and kids TV presenter *NEIL*(*NEO*) *Buccanon*. We never knew *NEOs* second name, but if it was *Buccanon* it confirms *NEIL* as our Lord and saviour, which i suspected even as a child. I don't know how many times the 9/11 clue in The Matrix has been discussed and theorised, but it has to be the most well-known and talked about 9/11 conspiracy/inside job message to date. Go on any conspiracy/alternative media site and The Matrix will be mentioned in some way or another. I think this is seconded by They Live and Avatar. Nowadays, all you hear about is The Hunger Games.
