In 1989 „Desert Wind” came out, Ofra’s next studio album, which was oriented more towards the international market after the overwhelming succes of „Shaday” in the previous year. She made a self-conscious effort to maintain a connection to her musical roots while reaching out for mainstream appeal.
The main language of the album is English, however Ofra also sings in Arabic, Hebrew, and the ancient language of Aramaic. The sound is a mainstream form of dance music with elements of synthpop and an influence of house music. It also contains songs from the Jewish tradition like „Kaddish”.
The album was produced by Arif & Joe Mardin, Ofra herself, Thomas Dolby and Bezalel Aloni.
We provide full English translations for the mixed language songs.
Kaddish is a hymn praising God that is recited during Jewish prayer services. „Kaddish” means „Holy One”. There are several types of this prayer, including The Mourner's Kaddish, which is chanted as part of the mourning rituals as well as at funerals. Mourners recite Kaddish to show that despite the loss, they still praise God.
Lyrics (English translation):
Why do I cry at night?
Oh, why do I feel so bad?
Something holds me tight
It's something in the air
I have a prayer, a prayer
A prayer from my heart
Night after night after daylight
Memories of home
During your lifetime and during your days - Kaddish
For the disciples of Israel - Kaddish
For comfort and shelter - Kaddish
For healing and redemption - Kaddish
For forgiveness and atonement - Kaddish
For salvation, for salvation - Kaddish
For comfort - Kaddish
For health - Kaddish
For forgiveness - Kaddish
And for atonement, for salvation, for salvation - Kaddish
Kaddish for the rabbis
Kaddish for the mourners
For the prosper of the world - Kaddish
He will grow and be sanctified - Kaddish
For comfort, for shelter - Kaddish
For healing and redemption - Kaddish
During your lifetime and during your days - Kaddish
For the disciples of Israel - Kaddish
For peace - Kaddish
From Heaven - Kaddish
Let it be - Kaddish
And for atonement, for salvation, for salvation - Kaddish
