In a world where we could likely get by with just one amp, what's the role or luxury of having 12 amp models in one compact modeling amp?
why a catalyst instead of a modeling rig?
how did Line 6 decide on the original amps?
how did you decide on the which models to add?
what's your favorite of all of them?
Join us to get the inside with all things modeling and Line 6.

Had a Catalyst 60, sold it, went through a few other amps, now I just got a used Catalyst 60 again. :)

Timely subject. I sold off my Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb Blonde to free up some funds towards a new guitar arriving next week, a Peavey HP2 Tiger Eye (can't wait), and picked up a brand new Catalyst 200 for less than half of what I got for the Fender's sale. I don't need 200 watts, I run it on the 1/2 watt setting, but it was practically half-price from the store and it sounded simply massive. A no-brainer. Early days, but super impressed, and it pairs brilliantly as a power amp and cab with my Helix, something Mr Cordy has touched on before. I also use the Helix for midi control of the amp. The firmware update was an absolute doddle, and generous of Line 6 to offer the same amp range to customers who have the non-CX version of the amp. That's partially why I got mine cheaper, something to consider if others are looking to pick one up soon. I don't miss the Fender at all.

I hope L6 continues to focus on their own models or “blended” creations. A vintage Orange would be great as would a Lab Series L5 or L7.

Can you do an interview with Andy Aledort (Guitar World transcribing maestro; definitive Hendrix transcriptions) to discuss his solo work, writing, interviewing, and his time with Dickey Betts (maybe plug his lovely article about his time with him). Simply not enough one on one interviews exploring his skill and history as working musician.

Another great video. The most interesting comment was that Keith lives in that space between vintage and Sifi innovation. In 1983 I bought a Mesa Boogie Studio .22 amp. It came with an owners manual menu of 8 different amp "settings". Looking back it was an early attempt at "modeling". But at the end of the day I found "my sound" and guess what, it sounded like a an overdriven Silverface twin reverb. So I just played my Silverface twin. My point is that innovation is awesome if it's something new, but if you love #2 pencils, it's kind of hard to improve a #2 pencil. Studio guys do need 12 amp sounds. Most of us are not studio players. I need 3 sounds, and a shitload load more time to practice.

I have a Katana artist , always been curious to try one of these . The Katana doesn’t have a Fender blackface clean , it has Fender tweed and Marshall based sounds , the clean is Roland amp based I believe

This might not be a popular opinion, but I like the Katana Artist better than the Catalyst. I am a massive fan of the HX Stomp, though.

I had the option of going down the Katana Artist route. If you're a gigging musician, the setup, I think, works really well with the GA-FC foot controller. But when I A/B'd them briefly in the store, at the bedroom volumes I play at, the Catalyst had a much more comprehensive range and handled the clean/dynamic sort of tones better. Those are typically what I'd gravitate towards, and I use some drive pedals. Plus it the deal I got meant that the 200 was half the price of a Katana Artist combo when buying a new one.

I believe the answer to the headphone question is that high impedance (250 ohm) models works best with Helix. Several KZbin contributors have suggested modifications to the unit's settings to improve the sense of ambience when using headphones.

Well, heck. So glad I watched this- I just confirmed that the new firmware works on the 1st-gen hardware (non-CX), called my local dealer, and snagged a mint used Catalyst 60 for $170 USD! Should make for a fun wet/dry rig with my Weber-equipped Tone Master DR. Both amps together weigh the same as one AC15C1...

My son wants a new amp . Hes been using a Peavy rage or my small Orange Crush for his practice . Hes borrowed my DSL a couple of times , but its a heavy beast . Im tied between the Katana 50 or the Catylist 60 , but we both prefer the Line 6 sounds better , plus the Catylist comes with the footswitch and cover included , is slightly cheaper and has an FX loop , where you need to step up to the 100 watt in the Katana for that .

Great amps , especially since they have so many tonal options. I played my first Vox30 recently, after playing Marshalls for years. Nice amp , a few stomp boxes and BAM , you're off. But all in all my nephew has a line 6 , and cant keep me from playing it. 🎸💥

I like the idea of modelers, er, virtual amps, doing things that physical amps can't do, that most of the constraints on these things come from what they emulate: boost it, clip it, modulate the volume, and add reverb. I mean, this is y = f(x) coming from the guitar, and the amp gives f2(y). Any math we want can be applied to the waveform, if processor and A/D converters are fast enough. At some point, someone will use all this amazing new tech to do amazing new things beyond chasing old things. I wonder what that will be like.
@kennethc2466
@kennethc2466 5 ай бұрын
Well, they have to chase things, as SS/DSP just can not physically do what a tube does. So, they have to chase the gold standard, which are tube amps. If they make their own DSP 'model', then it's just a guitar synth, and calling it a 'tread plate' will no longer hide that fact. As a electrical engineer for over 27 years, I've worked with many professionals who scientifically demonstrate these facts, and write peer-reviewed, academic papers. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the AES (Audio Engineering Society), are professional societies whom publish peer-reviewed journals, with articles written by engineers and scientists who work in the professional and consumer audio industry, as well as in cutting-edge academic research. “Vacuum-tube amplifiers differ from transistor and operational amplifiers because they can be operated in the overload region without adding objectionable distortion [study4]. The combination of the slow rising edge and the open harmonic structure of the overload characteristics form an almost ideal sound- recording compressor. Within the 15-20 dB "safe" overload range, the electrical output of the tube amplifier increases by only 2-4 dB, acting like a limiter. However, since the edge is increasing within this range, the subjective loudness [study5] remains uncompressed to the ear. This effect causes tube-amplified signals to have a high apparent level, which is not indicated on a volume indicator (VU meter). Tubes sound louder and have a better signal-to-noise ratio because of this extra subjective headroom that transistor amplifiers do not have. Tubes get punch from their naturally brassy overload characteristics. Since the loud signals can be recorded at higher levels, the softer signals are also louder, so they are not lost in recording noise floor, and they effectively give the tube sound greater clarity." -AES Those are called peer-reviewed, academic FACTS, and the engineers who build the SS/DSP amps are well aware of them. Hence, all the marketing aimed at convincing you that a DSP amp, costing 6times what your laptop computer does, is a 'value'. Poor people open their Fender "tonemaster", only to see you paid near a thousand dollars for Raspberry Pie with a CHEAP speaker cab. Meanwhile, my Bassman gets more valuable everyday, with 38 years of fail free service. My kids will get my Bassman, but the trash heap gets most DSP amps, like all the other ewaste.

@@kennethc2466 Hi! I don't know much, I have a valve jr, and my playing sucks. My channel of solo 70's covers proves that. I just think that if someone's going to turn guitar signal into numbers, process the numbers, and turn the result into signal again, there are infinitely more possibilities than imitate a tube amp, and that some of those might sound good. And the one piece of equipment I want most is a large room.
@kennethc2466
@kennethc2466 5 ай бұрын
@@ScottfromBaltimore I agree that DSP offers an originality beyond imitating tube amps. It's already done, and called synths. Keyboards have embraced it since the 70's. Yet, one doesn't play an obo, to sound like a trumpet, or anything else. I don't play guitar to sound like some synth, I play guitar because I like the sound, and the instrument. Nothing has the clarity, punch, and definition of a tube amp. The industry knows this, and follows suit by calling their synths 'modelers' to make people pretend they are something else than a DSP synth. Look into the Roland synths for guitar, as they've done what you're curious about.

I sold my Spark 40...I just didnt like the sound...I am an old school analog guy but I am open to and really like the idea of the small size and versatility of something like a stomp. Do the line 6 modelers sound "better" than the Positive Grid ones or is that completely subjective? I'm thinking of trying the new pod express. I'm currently playing in an apt so I cannot play loud...I'm using a 5W boutique Princeton clone thru an 8" speaker.

I had the catalyst 100 for a month or two. It was pretty dire. As soon as any decent amount of gain is added, it had that classic "amp simulation through a speaker" feel. Absolutely no "in the room" feel. I didn't care for it at all. I mostly play tube amps but I've had the Katana MK II 100 kicking around the house for a few years. It offers appropriate levels of gain and has that "amp in the room" feel. My wife, who knows nothing about tone, sat in my studio and I played a bit with some gain on each back to back. She, amazingly, could tell right away that one sounds "real" and the other sounds "fake". She does hear a lot of my playing through a tube amp, so that might have helped her. If SHE can tell the difference, you should be able to aswell.
