It's probably a lean season. They kill their young to prevent long-term suffering. I live on a houseboat. The coots do the same when food is scarce and there are too many chicks. Nature is harsh. That's why there are not many sickly animals in the wild.

The stork attack was not by the mother. It was an intruder wishing to kill the brood. Storks only remove the smallest baby when needed, not their whole clutch
