It's always so fascinating how much lost media is "lost" until some random youtube channel or filesharing website account just uploads it in its entirety. It's almost never a situation where a box of official vhs tapes, or film reels, or original recordings, etc. are found in a warehouse or storage room.

This is exactly right. I think we need to drop the word "lost" from anything made post-VHS era, including video games. FORGOTTEN, yes ... but never lost, not like silent film, for example, which IS found in old cool and dry storerooms where the found film - somehow - didn't magically deteriorate, crumble, or catch on fire and blow up a building. We don't talk enough about music when it comes to lost media, either.

@@classiclife7204 Old music and film reels should never be left in a storeroom to wither away. At some point original prints, tapes, etc. will degrade, but some big companies are doing this with film and music that isn’t even that old yet. Just look at what happened in the big Universal Music Group fire of 2008. So many masters to classic music forever gone, then they lied about it. Reading that story is just a study in cutting corners for scraps of money, on so many levels, and shows how easily it could’ve been prevented if the company had simply spent the time and money.

I feel like one of the big reasons why we are fascinated by lost media, is we are fascinated by creation, things that we know/dont know exist, but are not understood, that crossed with the necessity when lost media is "originally discovered" that it turns into this treasure hunt to find the original media, that makes it so interesting.

Cartoon Lost and Found is really fascinating to me. The special was meant to teach the viewers how lucky they were to find the tapes of old shows before they were destroyed yet ironically the special itself was lost until September of last year.

Funny thing about Peppermint Park. The puppet segments had been uploaded quite a while before the episodes were uploaded, but ONLY the puppet segments. The original uploader was requested to have the full episodes or at least the missing other segments, only to reply by saying something to the extent of not wanting to upload them because the leftover segments were unremarkable. So the series was considered "lost" for a while because other than the cringe factor, there was just nothing else of value.

I feel like it’s a shitty excuse. If something’s lost and you have it, then I say it’s your responsibility to upload as much of it as you got online no matter the quality (aside from NSFL stuff of course).

The uploads of the Peppermint Park clips were pretty old, and I can't even remember which upload even had that comment. But it was well before uploading anything around 30 minutes wasn't very common, and certainly before Lost Media was as big as it was. The uploader posted the clips as pure cringe and only cringe. I can see why he wouldn't want to bother posting the generic sounding segments by themselves, or why he wouldn't want to reupload everything as a full episode. The clips were there to say "look at this abomination," in bite sized chunks. If I can remember the comment, I think he was looking into posting the forgettable non-puppet segments, but never got around to it.

I think one of the first uploaders of those clips was cringevenom or cringevision or something like that. The Peppermint Park puppet segments were on YT for over 10 or 11 years. I know one of those channels got taken down, so the earliest ones on record may even be reuploads. Very much a different time as far as YT goes.

"Attack of the Giant Vulture" was the source of one of my first nightmares as a kid, and I remember it to this day. In the dream the vulture burst through my window just like he bursts through the paper wall at the beginning of the film. Then he chased me around my house.

Oh dang...when I was a little kid, I remember taping Cartoon Lost and Found off of TV and watching it all the time (I was obsessed with anything about cartoon history, since I wanted to be an animator for most of my childhood. Did not pan out, I'm afraid). I can even quote certain parts of it still. I had no idea it had become lost media! I seriously doubt my parents kept that tape, but they do have a tendency to hang on to the weirdest things, so maybe I'll check next time I visit.

It normally stops being lost when it hits the internet, as multiple people now have copies of it. The problem comes when there's only the original tape and is in the basement of some old Czech lady that doesn't even know

Even if that does happen, if the person who uploads it finds out it’s lost media or was already aware it usually ends up being a good clue about where the lost media is hiding or where to start digging. I know people have found out the origins of songs that way.

I can't imagine a copyright holder actively enforcing rights over media they don't physically possess. In the case of IP holders intentionally keeping things off the market to erase it, U.S. law is supposed to be designed against long term protection for dead IP.

God, I saw Cartoon Lost and Found when it aired. I didn't realize it was lost. I just remember thinking "Adam West is weird and probably hard up for money." His advice at the end of the episode (delivered at low, dutch angle and looking off camera) was: "Don't throw batteries into a fire. They could explode." Weird.

You also have a piece of found graffiti in the background of Attack of The Giant Vulture. BUST form a crew called TOK was a Brooklyn, NY based graf artist who died young (he may not even have hit his 20's yet). He 'got up' in all boroughs of New York City and over time, it's probably all been lost to buffing (graffiti clean up) and general change/gentrification of the city. The fill-in's you have in this video, located in the Chinatown area of New York are certainly long gone. RIP Bust.

I would love to find a couple of half-hour travelogue programs called "Leroy in N.Y." and "Leroy in L.A.", in which the title character, a rural Southerner somewhere between Jim Varney's "Ernest" and Jeff Foxworthy in silliness, takes viewers on a tour of sites and activities in Los Angeles and New York City. It ran on Ted Turner's WTBS Superstation in Atlanta during its early days.

I've gotten used to watching so many iceberg videos that lost media vids are almost indiscernible, and both have been pretty lacking with other channels known for those videos. I remember watching 'Freaky' as a kid, and I can confirm, it is indeed nightmare fuel! I could go on about the episodes that I can recall; just to name a few, there was the one where a kid obtains a ventriloquist dummy that comes to life and ultimately the kid is turned into a dummy; one where a kid leaves junk mail in the letterbox of a creepy neighbour who is very particular about not having junk mail, in the end the kid is trapped in a white void of a shopping catalog, unable to escape. One I distinctly remember watching, was of this girl discovering a photo booth at a mall. When she enters it, there's this massive studio with a photographer and crew that prompt her to pose like a model. Once she leaves, she discovers her face on magazines and newspapers, I don't remember what happens next, but the mall they filmed the episode in is actually not far from where I live, so it was kinda surreal seeing a familiar location in a TV series. And that's all the ones I remember off the top of my head, there's plenty of other episodes that my sisters and I watched and have haunted me ever since. Crazy to think it was considered lost for sometime, considering that the last time I remember watching the series was back in 2011. So while it was easy to come across here in NZ, it never occurred to me that it was inaccessible elsewhere. I should rewatch it sometime, confront my childhood fears and all that.

lost media has such a huge mystique because it's nearly impossible for media to _become_ lost now. As most of you post-internet kiddies have either realized, or WILL realize soon, every embracing photo, every drunken late night quote, every dumb video you, or your friends, parents, etc have EVER posted is STILL THERE... SOMEWHERE, where it will be found and brought up with minimal effort. Pre-internet media, however has the wild superpower of being able to just... go away.

The PC version of Zeus Carnage Heart Second may have been extremely rare, but there was a PS1 version which even got a direct sequel of its own (the confusingly named "Zeus II Carnage Heart"). The PS1 version is uncommon here, but I've still seen it around at several secondhand dealers, as well as online auctions, for 3,000 to 5,000 yen. The direct sequel (both games are spiritual sequels to earlier "Carnage Heart" games) isn't super common but can still usually be bought for less than 1,000 yen.

I remembered seeing that short a couple times as a kid and it did freak me out, but when I tried looking for it, I couldnt find any uploads. Imp Inc. clearly influenced Courage the Cowardly Dog in some way. Both Courage and the Imp pilot featured an elderly couple living on a homestead in the middle of a barren wasteland, and involved them being visited by strange creatures.

A whole avenue of lost media that fascinates me is all those old music videos, many fo which from the 90's that aired on MTV AMP. A few of them are almost impossible to find these days including the original broadcasts which were really fun to watch because they mixed all the videos in together like a continuous DJ mix and played some really cool obscure music. One band on this show was called the Shadowplay and the music video was called The Undreamt Dream. i love that video and had it on VHS until it was lost. There is very little info about how to obtain this video, the song is only available in a couple of places on vinyl. There's a small handful of these episodes on KZbin but many have been removed for copyright
