I’m 33 and just started my bachelors in psych to go onto do my masters. In HS I wanted to be a counselor but talked myself out of it for cost and time. Your content is so validating and helpful. Thank you!

I can totally relate to that! Allyssa did such a great job of walking through the characteristics needed. I actually was a counseling professor for 10 years and left the field to launch my own coaching certification because it's a lot shorter and more cost effective. I just posted a video differentiating these paths on my channel if you're interested. Good luck wit your decision!

These traits are spot on - they're exactly what I've seen in students who are successful as a counselor. I really appreciated how you spoke to being reliable even when we're in our own pain.

Hi Allyssa! Great content:) Would love to see a video on what maternity leave looks like/ how to manage it/ if you lost any of your caseload when owning your own practice!

I really appreciated this whole video, and especially the part about the importance of maintaining boundaries and how it is possible to fall into not maintaining boundaries out of wanting to be nice to our clients. I think that some of the same traits that make a person a good fit for becoming a therapist (e.g., high empathy) also increases our risk these kinds of boundary violations, so I am glad you included that in your list.

Thank you so much for this! I am going back to school after motherhood and feel so intimidated by all the steps it takes to become a therapist BUT this reminded me of all the reasons I feel drawn to it why it makes sense for me even if it is still a bit far away. ❤

This is a great video! I’m still finishing my undergrad but I’ve always thought about being a therapist. I Iove helping people and going to therapy myself has changed my life.

Alyssa, thank you so much for posting this! I’ve been trying to do as much research as possible on this field. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do when I graduated with a degree in public health so I just started to think of my own natural traits and things I do everyday and they aligned really heavy with this field and I’ve been dedicated to the journey of becoming a therapist ever since and this video is very validating. Best!

Getting a masters in clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy or social work would be your three fastest paths!
