partly because there's always at least one jackass that abuses the privilege. partly because a lot of people either hate or fear anyone that's different from them. Partly because motels and the like have better lobbyists than you do. But I think it's mostly just another fringe benefit of the war on drugs. Large corporation post their parking lots so that it's harder to hold them liable when you get attacked and/or robbed on their property, they don't actually care, but they'll have you moved on because if they don't some moron in a robe might decide that they're now tenants and fine you daily for not providing adequate living conditions while simultaneously making you go through a 6 month eviction process to get rid of them.

Because the government wants your money, tax dollars, etc...funny thing is, they have no problem with you sleeping on the ground under a bridge or in a NYC sewer !! Sad partis, not everyone living in a car etc is doing it by choice!!

@susananderson9619 - because the government is losing out on tax revenue from you or your landlord paying property taxes. Additionally, if you’re truly living off grid, with no permanent physical address, it’s much harder for them to find you if they want to steal your property or put you in jail. Another note regarding landlords, governments are much more responsive to wealthy residents of their jurisdiction than to us “commoners.” When people don’t need apartments, condos, or rent homes, landlords - who pay a lot more in taxes and, sometimes, political donations than you or I - lose revenue. So, they pressure government to impose regulations that make it harder to live without them. This is the same reason governments don’t want people having solar or other resources that make them truly independent. Truly independent people are difficult to control. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The alcohol rule has been put into place at the state parks in Maryland because they were having problems with young groups going to the state park and getting liquored up. The general rule that the rangers told me is that they do not care if you have a glass of wine with your dinner or have a beer in your RV. Getting sloppy drunk and obnoxiously loud, however, will get their attention.

@@ips7125 Well knowledge is tenuous. You may be correct - What I have seen is that the City ordinances are the ones that hold the final word. Yes the owners can say that people can park their vehicles - can park there excetera. ✨ I actually called an enforcement agency of a City where I called the owners. The owner said yes people can park there and I called the enforcement agency and they said no - and we can give tickets. As people say everyone can do their own research. ✨ ❄️ When a person looks at the Walmart app for California 90% say no.❄️ It's seems pretty standard procedure in The nomad community that we call first. Great video. As a traveler, with dark tint, I have a Florida plate and registration and it's allowed there. I also have a Florida license. When I occasionally get pulled over for it in a different state, I tell them I'm traveling through and I'm not living in their state. It's never gone beyond that for me. Just be courteous and respectful to the officer. However, if the issue were pushed I'd ask for a supervisor. For certain things like this , there is a reciprocity in the Federal law that protects you from non violent, non drug related infractions like tint being too dark if your domicile state legally allows it and it is something you are traveling in. It's like driving your car from a state that has no inspection to a state that has an inspection, they can't ticket you or tell you to leave. They really can't do anything legally. Also some states require a front and back license plate whereas others don't, if you come from a state with one and go to a state that requires 2, they can't do anything legally to you. I also have a conceal and carry, this is a whole other thing where my license is reciprocated in many states but there are many states where it is not and therefore placement of your gun and ammunition, and storage thereof may need to be changed adhering to that states guns laws and whether or not they reciprocate your states licence (if they have one).

I’m from Florida as well and have only a rear plate as required by Florida law. I travel all over the US for work and the only hassle I ever got was in California when going through a checkpoint. Officer asked why I didn’t have a front plate and I told him I’m a resident of Florida and it’s not required. He nodded and I moved along. No harm no foul.

@luckyKon

@@rosalindastourian3985 well they can have fun waiting for the payment that will never come because I don't live there. 🤑 I also travel with federal statutes and they will soon realize I'm "not the droid they are looking for". Some police officers will do what you allow them to get away with. also all of my driving is recorded and so are they, and they are let known that they're being recorded. I have nothing to worry about and have been tried and tested. Trust me, at this point I get immense satisfaction stonewalling authority that goes outside their bounds. Tell your friend they'd be well off to learn the law. Again, imagine a state writing you a ticket for not having an inspection when domicile doesr call for it. Are you just not allowed to travel there without infractions? Of course not because federal law allows the free movement of states and it's not a criminal act. The same applies to tint.

No state can legally force you to alter your vehicle in any way so long as it is legal in the state it is registered. The only reason some states go after out of state vehicles is because they know most people will capitulate due to them not having the ability or want to come back to fight it in court. A few years ago my wife was forced to rip the tint off the windows of her car in California and even though it took a couple years of fighting it we were reimbursed for the cost of court and the officers unlawful actions. I could have gotten more money but I told the judge that I only wanted to be reimbursed for the reinstallation of the tint, travel expenses for court and court costs. Window tint is legal in AZ. Edit: missed a word.

In Baja Mexico hazard lights are used to warn motorists traveling in the opposite direction that there is an upcoming hazard . For instance, there is a horse or cow in or near the road. You turn on your hazard lights to warn vehicles approaching in the opposite direction that they will be experiencing an upcoming hazard. It’s actually a very useful process. You only leave your hazard lights on for a mile or two.

In Baja Mexico, slower trucks will put on their Left turn signal when they are suggesting that you can safely pass them on the left. You may also find any kind of item, including a 300 lb. rock in the traffic lane, being used as a warning of a deep pothole or sinkhole behind it. And your American insurance may cover you (probably not), but you legally must have Mexican auto insurance anyway, or you could be prosecuted as uninsured. And all bribes are negotiable.

If a light comes on my dash indicating there's a problem, I'm going to put my hazards on. Because if something goes massively wrong while someone is behind me, at least we BOTH knew something might be about to go wrong. -I don't care if it's legal or not, if my RV is on my own property you have to trespass to complain. If I'm the one who owns the land, I will use my belongings as I see fit on my own land. Since I'm not the sort of person who makes trouble or causes a scene, there should be no reason for anyone to bother me about my choices with my belongings on my own property. North Carolina does not allow alcohol in its state parks. From what I've seen it is only enforced if folks are obvious or being a disturbance. What is considered a disturbance can vary somewhat from park to park depending upon how the camp host and rangers look at things. Our experience has been if you are in your RV it is out of sight out of mind. If you are outside no one is going to come up and ask what is in your red cup but if they see the wine bottle or cocktail glasses on the picnic table you might get a visit.

I was an accident investigator when I held a Private Detectives license and I can tell you the answer to your question about Insurance Companies denying claims for incident that occur while over weight is TRUE! If they find you where overweight they hold it as unsafe operations and can deny any claims. The best way to avoid this is look in two places. The first is look on the side wall of your tires for their rated load limit and the second place you want to check is the tag inside the drivers door jam for the gross vehicle weight limit. And stay below it when it says Combined Weight Limit this includes both the weight of the vehicle and any trailer you are towing; you also want to check the load limit of your hitch; different classes are limited to different weights. Don't forget to check the trailer tires and trailer weight limits to avoid issues. Also there is no reason for you to enter a weight station / scale house with an RV or Camper Van as you are not a commercial vehicle. To enter one is inviting an inspection and scale check; you may even get a ticket just for entering the scales unless it is required for your vehicle; read the signs. If you have a temp tag you may be required to enter and provide proof of ownership as a temp tag is technically an unregistered vehicle this also applies to rented vehicles in many states. No some places; like FL, if you have a panel van that is a stealth camper you will be required to enter an open scale house. All that being said thank you for mentioning leaving room for truckers; I am a driver myself now and after driving 750+ miles in a day I get pissed when I think I've found a spot in a lot and get ready to pull or back in only to find a car; camper or RV is illegally parked in the middle of the spot and I have to risk a violation for driving over my allowed hours of service to find a spot further down the road; truck drivers can only drive 11 hours per day before being required by law to stop and take a 10 hour break before driving more .

I used to fly myself around the country, from job to job, in my own private plane. One plane I had had a long history. It was still airworthy and safe to fly but when we were doing an annual inspection on it the mechanic showed me a couple of things that were not quite to specifications. At one tome the engine had been replaced and the engine that had been installed had a different oil filler spout than was mentioned in the data sheet. That was an unapproved modification. Easy to fix, changed the spout and it was fine. The other thing was that the wings had been removed and replaced at one time and the four bolts holding the wings on were in backwards. Yes, if I had an accident that caused a lot of financial loss the insurance company could have welched and not paid. Same thing could happen to R.V.ears. I would be sure to check that I had the right tires and didn’t overload the rig. Do Ann maintenance and keep a record of it. C.Y.A.

When I bought a 2 year old camper from a dealership; the tech told us to loose the tires as soon as we could. He explained most tires they deliver campers with are known as China Bombs or Maypop. They have very thin sidewalls; and speed rating is very low like 55 mph. Well he was right two blow outs and the damage it caused sent me looking for the best trailer tires and highest speed rating I could find. The cheap tire doesn't just go flat the side wall bubbles out and explodes. My damage was moderate but some people have had extensive wheel well underbelly and siding damage.

I got one for ya, Bridge Law and legal length. The big issue with this is how exactly it is measured, some states have laws regulating trailer length, Florida is 41’ and California is 40’. The length is not measured by the trailer Body length, it’s measured from the hitching point, ball hitch or kingpin, to the center of the rear most axle. So legally a 32’ bumper pull may only measure 20’ under bridge law.

I believe that national, if you are just passing thru a state that your vehicle doesn't meet all codes, like bumper hight and headlight level, if. your vehicle meets all criteria for your state of residence, then they cannot cite you. Iasked this question long ago when traveling in a raise 4x4. I never received a citation for the vehicle, including emission laws. P.S.: My vehicle is now 49 years old.

Great video. Here's one for you: Living in a vehicle on Public land is illegal. Regarding the Pipeline Fire in Arizona last year. Court documents show an individual was arrested in suspicion of building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including charcoal, coal and briquettes; occupying or using a residence on forest service lands and possessing a controlled substance. The individual stated that he was homeless, living in a vehicle and had been camping on public lands for two days. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the charge of "Occupying or Using a Residence on Forest Service Lands". I didn't understand the "Occupying or Using a Residence on Forest Service Lands" charge, at first, so I did some research. Living in a vehicle on Public land is against the law. Federal regulations stipulate that taking up residence on national forest system lands and facilities is illegal, as outlined by the Code of Federal Regulations (Title 36, Chapter II, Part 261). Under Subpart A, (general prohibitions), for “occupancy and use” (261.10) 261.10 Occupancy and use. The following are prohibited: (b) Construction, reconstructing, improving, maintaining, occupying or using a residence on National Forest System lands unless authorized by a special-use authorization or approved operating plan when such authorization is required. As defined by the Code of Federal Regulations, a Residence is; Any structure or shelter, whether temporary or permanent, including, but not limited to, buildings, buses, cabins, campers, houses, lean-tos, mills, mobile homes, motor homes, pole barns, recreational vehicles, sheds, shops, tents and trailers, which is being used, capable of being used, or designed to be used, in whole or in part, full or part-time, as living or sleeping quarters by any person, including a guard or watchman.

I get it I truly do. They are trying to regulate us all into tiny boxes that they can control. They can go to hell. If you obey all the rules you would have nothing go nowhere and do F all. There is always some jackass who wants us gone. OR who wants whatever we have. So they charge for parking and water and emptying garbage. I spent the whole winter on BLM land in California in 20/21. I have spent way beyond the allotted time in state parks in New Mexico and rest areas in Arizona. I have been told to leave so I go. All the cops I have encountered are pleasant and want nothing to do with enforcing this nonsense. Fortunately there are casinos, truck stops and a million other places that are super easy on the nerves. If you try to live by all these rules you would never do anything.

Some rvs and vans have surprisingly bad weight issues because the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel plus passengers leaves little room weightwise for cargo weight. The danger if going over the weight limit is steering difficulty plus braking difficulty, which is why insurance companies might have issues. You can weigh on scales to see if you are ok. You can be too heavy even in a 7 passenger van with only 6 adults. Doesn't seem right, but you need to be careful.

I have had experience with the pet rules at the state and national parks. There are also rules in some places that you cannot leave your pet unattended in your "vehicle" (which camper vans and rv are often considered a vehicle) so you might as well not even bother to go to the parks if you intend to visit any part of the park except the parking lot. I have even been chastised for sticking my head in the office to find out where is it okay to go with a pet because you can't bring the pet into the office. Most places are NOT pet friendly.

I will say that everyone needs to swap out their tires for steel radials. The straight rubber tires RVs have are garbage. Most important, I rarely hear someone giving this advice, but always use a 4way sway system for trailers, and be sure to put your coupling device for the ball and sway system away so you have it to enjoy. Dear T&D, as always good content, well presented - thank you! Regarding weight for towed campers, every vehicle and towed unit has maximum weights designated by the manufacturers. Additionally, in our state, the tow vehicle may have a maximum weight for which the vehicle’s license is taxed. Yes, we were told by the tow vehicle manufacturer that our warranty would be void if we loaded the truck above the design maximums -AND- our insurance COULD BE VOID - if the truck and/or tow vehicle were over the design maximum weights. Not being a lawyer, starting a trip, we get our rig weighed - at a truck stop - AND keep the resulting information to show to any members of the law enforcement community, just out of an abundance of caution.

An acquaintance bought a truck camper for his new Ford-150. The camper was too heavy and way over the truck's limit. He added springs and airbags and other items to keep his truck from squatting from the weight. He was heading out to go camping and had to make a sudden, emergency stop to avoid an accident. The sudden deceleration caused the heavy camper weight to obviously shift forward. The truck frame folded in half like a lawn chair. The insurance company learned of the camper and the truck modifications and denied the entire claim-for the camper and the truck.

The San Diego law is as follows: “Section 86.0139 of the San Diego Municipal Code (SDMC) prohibits oversized, non-motorized and recreational vehicles from parking on public streets between the hours of 2 and 6 a.m. and prohibits parking any such vehicle within fifty feet of an intersection at any time.” Which begs the question….what defines a “recreational vehicle”. Is a modular van that can easily be switched between all passenger seats and a bed arrangement exempt? Or some vans that simultaneously serve as both? Yet another reason to have an RV that looks like a passenger or cargo van from the outside.

Just FYI, a vehicle only has to meet the registration requirements of the state it is registered in. You can drive through NH with tinted front windows all day long if the vehicle is registered legally in another state. Not saying an overzealous cops can’t try to give you a ticket in hopes of getting some easy tourist money, but that ticket won’t hold up in court if you are a resident of another state and your vehicle is legally registered there. Vehicle registration laws are not the same as moving violations.

That was fun. I believe that not living in a designated house of some kind with an adress is also "against the law" (Federal I guess?), but not only is that wrong and none of the government's business, many of these laws are also not right - an infringement on our rights. But laws about propane in tunnels makes sense - I have never heard of that one though so it is good to be informed. I also capture my grey water from the sink in a bottle and pour it out daily. But no chemicals go in there - organic hand soap, vinegar and water from washing pots, pans, plates and utensils. I guess I am breaking the law, but I figure I am allowed to wash my dishes and hands from a bottle outside my camper, so what's the difference?

Insurance companies will deny a claim if you are discovered as living in your vehicle or tow vehicle full time. It’s based on the rate where you live, down to the city or county. Usually the limit of being outside your designated policy premium rate zone, is 30 days. Therefore if you live in your vehicle, always send your insurance carrier a notice of your travels. To cover your butt. Pick a state far away so other states on your path are included. And drive very carefully and legally so as not to have an issue. As long as you don’t go beyond 30 days you can be within the rules of your policy. For extended periods you may need a rider on your policy. If they even offer it. If you don’t have valid insurance your trip will be very short and your vehicle impounded.

However some states like Florida Pennsylvania and Missouri have trespassing laws making it harder to stay in non designated over night stopping areas. Also here in New York a rest area is for a rest not a stay over but they rarely bother you.

Many areas of WA state have drivers constantly driving far above the speed limit, and everybody does it together, so cops will actually pull you over for going to slow as now you're creating a scenario of people constantly going into oncoming traffic to get past you. And there is also a law where if there is more than 5 vehicles stuck behind you, regardless of the speed you're going, you need to pull over to let them pass. Applies to all vehicles on the road including regular bicyles.

My kids were stationed in FL for a bit and left that as their state of residence so they are not taxed. I may have to stay there for a while when I get started to do the same!

Oh and one more thing if you want to check your weight don't ever go to a weigh station you're asking for trouble go to a cat scale where your vehicle at a truck stop cat scale and then adjust your weight and you won't have to deal with those Pricks at the DOT

I believe the U.S. Commerce act protects out of state travelers with legally registered vehicles in their home state from prosecution against local laws in a different state while temporarily visiting. I could be wrong, though. This would cover front license plates, tint, mud flaps, etc.

@chriskibodeaux9818 so let's think about this. You live in Tennessee, you have the driver and passenger window of your vehicle LEGALLY tinted. You take a day trip to attend a sporting event in Cincinnati, OH. If you are temporarily there, OH law enforcement can always ticket you, but it WILL be thrown out in court. The reality is, if there were no protections, states would have vehicle checkpoints similar to weight stations on every interstate entering the jurisdiction.

They can ticket but it doesn't matter since they can't enforce it

WOW ! I had no idea, that such laws existed. Wado (thank you), for sharing this info. Some of the laws are a good idea, and others are downright, crazy. I appreciate you two, for pointing these laws out. 🤠👍

As a retired truck driver. The law says emergency flashers will be used on vehicles going under 25 miles an hour.

I learned that law in the early 70s when I started to drive. The flashers were to be used when broken down or unable to travel at the speed limit and need to get off the road.
