11 Things You Need To Know Before Your First Stand-up Comedy Gig

So you want to be a comedian? You've come to the right place.
Matt Hoss has been a stand-up comedian for over 10 years, has written over five stand-up comedy hours, written comedy for BBC, and has a Masters Degree in Stand-up Comedy.
In this episode, Matt distills down years of experience into this 20 minute lesson. You will need this advice before your first ever stand-up gig. Even if you have done a couple of gigs, or even been going for a while, here is some great advice to help you on your way. I really wish I had known all of these things when I first started out.

Some excellent advice here. Good tips. I instinctively knew to record my first standup set, unfortunately I could only get audio. Have been getting video since then. And I had been practicing that first five minute set for three years before I finally got to my first Open Mic. so I think my confidence was pretty good for a first time. A few of the other comics told me they were surprised that it was my first Open Mic. I’ve been doing a different five minute set each month, but I know I need to get to more venues, And do the same set more times to really get an idea of which jokes are number ones, which are number twos, and which ones really aren’t working. I’ll probably be re-watching this video again in another week or two as a refresher. Thanks again.

Great Stuff Matt, love the ethos. lots of good points & valuable advice, just to add to the "never call yourself a comedian straight away", I would up that once others start to refer to you as a comedian... that's the right time look forward to more & hopefully we'll chat more about this face to face sometime

Totally agree with everything you have said mate. Afer a couple of years doing stand-up, i have experienced exactly the same things myself. Its a great lesson for a newbie open mic comedian.

What if no one laughs at none of my jokes & my time is not up can I be like okay guys this isn’t going as expected I’m leaving or do I need too wait til my time is up? & when writing jokes does it have to be a story or can it be joke after joke? & any ideas on what to write about I have some jokes but I feel like they are terrible

Hey! The best thing about being a comedian is finding your own voice and your own style. You can choose whether to do a story or you can choose to do one-liner jokes. You don't need to be perfect on your first try, just enjoy it. Write about what you think you is funny. Record your set, listen back and keep the bits that people laugh at. That's the comedic process :) What are some thoughts you have? What is something people have laughed with you about in conversation? Why do you think stand-up is something you want to do? How do you treat friends who are supposed to come support your performance with their laughs rather come to judge your sense of humor thus refusing to even laugh when they are supposed to?
