I love ating in the Windjammer. My tip for going there is to get a couple of those wrapped eating utensils, along with a glass of water, tea, or other drink and find a table, as you said, before getting food. I also second browsing the food stations before selecting what you want to eat. One thing that peeves me in the windjammer is people who chose to make a salad for lunch. dinner and spend five minutes picking through the salad bowl to get that perfect (to them) piece of lettuce or carrot, etc for their salad, meanwhile holding up the line.
@phlydude11 ай бұрын
We always go pick a table and one person stays put to anchor it while the others go get their food. When the 1st comes back, they relieve the 1st so that the original table holder can go grab food. Bonus tip - take drink orders for everyone at the table so if a server comes over, you can ask for the drinks to be brought over vs. everyone trying to juggle food and drinks getting to the table.

Children don't understand that those public tongs are packed full of bacteria, so right after grabbing more food, they eat with their infected hands and spread bacteria everywhere they touch. People don't want to be bothered with common sense precautions while they're on vacation, so they do whatever their selfish natural habits dictate. They're in the mindset of "I'm on vacation, I just want to let everything go, and not worry about a thing." Then the next day they're in their stateroom barfing uncontrollably from a Noro outbreak. The worst part about that is they won't admit it's all due to *their own negligence.*

I agree, but you gotta have a resolution for those who are indecisive about what to eat. Here's another good tip I learned myself. If you plan on getting an omelet, plus things from the actual buffet, get your omelet first. Usually, the omelet is steaming hot and the food in the buffet line is not steaming hot. By the time you get your omelet, then you get your food from the buffet line, the omelet has cooled down nicely for you to eat. If you get your buffet food first and then your omelet, the buffet food has likely cooled down too much.

Learning to say "thank you" in Filipino might get you some extra special service and treatment as it really thrills them that you are making that effort. It's simple. Make sure you recognize crew members at the buffet. One passenger made a bad mistake when she assumed that my wife, dressed in a white blouse and dark slacks, was a crew member. She had an overloaded tray and approached my wife, telling her to take her tray to a table. Being Dutch and rather direct, my wife replied that the other passenger had way too much food on her tray and that she should take it to her table herself. The passenger asked to see my wife's name tag and was rather mortified to be told that she was not a crew member, but a fellow passenger. She scuttled off to her table with her overloaded tray and we descended to the main dining room for dinner.

Agreed on the whole making sure you can tell staff apart from other passengers; which should be pretty easy to do one would think. However, I myself was once mistaken for a cruise ship librarian by another passenger simply for sitting at the table the librarian normally sat in even though I was only wearing a graphic T-shirt and shorts; something no crew member would be allowed to wear during working hours. Now normally I would not have sat there but when I first entered the library all of the other seats were taken. So I'm just sitting there minding my own business enjoying a book I checked out when this lady walked in asking me if I could open up a locked shelf that had a book she wanted. See once the library is closed all of the shelves that have the books are locked. I had gotten my book out before the librarian locked up everything. Anyway, I had to tell the poor lady that I wasn't the librarian, but a fellow passenger, so I had no access to the books. The woman was annoyed. But yeah how could you mistake someone dressed super casually for a crew member? I mean I was pretty engrossed in my book. What employee would be reading during work time anyway?

This goes for all buffets not just on a cruise. A line is formed for a reason, please get in line and wait don't just jump in at what ever food you see . I see this alot with Europeans at all inclusive resorts.
@monkeyb18208 ай бұрын
interestingly, I never save a seat and imo this should only be done by an actual person that is part of a group. I've never considered plopping my stuff down at some table and using it to hold my table. Not sure I agree with this practice except for when there are many tables available, but perhaps there is a particular one that you like.

What I tend to do (and I used to do this all the time at the numerous Vegas buffets I’ve been to over the decades..) is to get a “Taster plate” first..get only a bite or two of, like, the best nine or ten things that look good-enough for both myself and my wife to get a sample size only and then get full portions of what we liked best as the second plate for each of us..we waste less food that way
@ModernMyths11 ай бұрын
I have people cut in line in front of me all the time XD Bu if I could give 1 advice. I would say this. It's crowded, and that's a given. But please, PLEASE, don't just stop in the middle of a path and just talk to someone or something. Or if you're walking slow, make sure people have enough room to go around you. It just makes the buffet more of a mess of people coming and going. Same goes with the tables, people are coming and going here and there as well, pull in your chairs or push them in when you are done.

If you're an evening main dining room user you'll recognize the same service staff at the buffets taking care of customers. Try to remember you servers' names (they make a habit of remembering yours, so it seems only fair) and greet them with a smile and their name when you recognize them. Cruise line staff work hard and they deserve kindness.

I wish buffets had "social seating" sections or something. Like a small section with tables that seat 4 or more people, but the expectation is that other guests may join your table if there are free seats. you could also put cards on the larger table that guests can display signaling that they are willing to accept random dining partners. A lot of the time I notice that couples are seating themselves at tables that can accommodate 4 people, meaning that 2 full seats are just being left empty because nobody wants to be rude and intrude. A simple solution would just be to have MORE 2 person seating options, of course... but I think it would be a great opportunity to allow for some early natural socialization. Especially for first time cruisers or more introverted people who might have trouble approaching people. Many of my best cruise friendships started in the main dining room at our table, and I think the ultra-casual atmosphere of the windjammer would be a great place for the same kind of blind socialization. Of course families and groups can still take all 4 seats. it's not reserved or anything. But it would just be a more efficient use of seating

Do not eat so much food, just because it is "complimentary". Looking around a "typical" Buffet Restaurant is an unnerving experience, because of all of the (young) overweight/obese people in sight and those going back for a full plate of "seconds" at Breakfast !!I. I travelled on and enjoyed a 19 day Royal Caribbean Trans-Pacific cruise and lost 0.5 kg in weight - because I ate "healthily". Mainly Fruit at Breakfast Soup only at Lunch and a simple Main Meal - with one desert - at night. I am an active 88 year old !!! 77 kg, 1.82 m - BMI 23.2

A simple, easily implemented courtesy...it'll never work, lol. Might I suggest that we take moment, after filling our plate(s), but before digging in, that we revisit the handwashing/sanitizer station and ensure our mitts are completely proofed against other's, less than hygienic, discourteous actions. Remember, it only takes one to contaminate a serving spoon.
@blacksorrento47196 ай бұрын
That is why I am very sad that cruise lines have gone back to self serve, as opposed to you telling the staff behind the food stations what you require. It was much more civilised, less contamination as the staff all wore disposable gloves and knew how to best serve. A lot of cruisers know how to eat, but not how to serve themselves without annihilating the whole dish.

Glad you mentioned about _Not_ reusing the plate! Granted the last buffet I went to was pre-pandemic, but having been bought up with a strong sense not to be _wasteful_ that's been my default behavior for the whole of my life! 😳 Also: Thinking of another comment here about people standing trying to decide _what_ to eat and holding up the line; Is it acceptable to walk past the queue to see what's on offer first and making your choices _before_ joining the queue? 😇
@Musicchick608 ай бұрын
It has been a state law in Kentucky to get a clean plate with every visit to the buffet for at least 50 years. I always did even before that.

@@Musicchick60 In the UK either is regarded acceptable unless signage states otherwise. Overall plate reuse is viewed OK _provided_ you're adept at serving new helpings onto your plate whilst avoid cross-contamination i.e. by pouring or dropping the food a short distance onto your plate from the spoon or tongs. 👍

We give the crew member a generous tip.

Parents kill me ...they know at home they won't let their kid pour himself a glass of milk for fear he'll make a mess..but now you're gonna let him attempt to make a plate a spaghetti by himself at the Buffet!?(I struggle with the tongs to pick up pasta, but you expect a 2nd grader to have no issues?!?) Noodles and marinara Everywhere!! I have no problem parent-shaming. It's not the kid's fault. "Oh sweetie, you're up here..ALL BY YOURSELF?!? Where's your Mommy and Daddy??" I make sure to get them a helping of whatever they were in line for...and then send them right back to their parents to Finish the job of fixing their plate of food like they are supposed to do in the 1st place...🍽🍝

Respectfully, I totally disagree with your first recommendation. Especially at busy times holding a table before getting food makes that table unavailable to people with food looking for a table. In some, or many, cases by the time one gets their food, another party could have sat and eaten. I’ve run into this issue more at Disney Parks than on my two cruises (on NCL and Disney, not Royal Caribbean). I find it very rude to hold a table in a busy area when not eating.
@caolkyle10 ай бұрын
Interesting take, I can appreciate having a catch up session without eating is rude to hold the table. Just off my first cruise and in the morning we’d find a table first as was always busy for breakfast and then my wife will go get something and then I’d go when she’s back or place my bag/drink bottle at the table to show it’s occupied.
