Children don't understand that those public tongs are packed full of bacteria, so right after grabbing more food, they eat with their infected hands and spread bacteria everywhere they touch. People don't want to be bothered with common sense precautions while they're on vacation, so they do whatever their selfish natural habits dictate. They're in the mindset of "I'm on vacation, I just want to let everything go, and not worry about a thing." Then the next day they're in their stateroom barfing uncontrollably from a Noro outbreak. The worst part about that is they won't admit it's all due to *their own negligence.*

My tip for going there is to get a couple of those wrapped eating utensils, along with a glass of water, tea, or other drink and find a table, as you said, before getting food. I also second browsing the food stations before selecting what you want to eat. One thing that peeves me in the windjammer is people who chose to make a salad for lunch. dinner and spend five minutes picking through the salad bowl to get that perfect (to them) piece of lettuce or carrot, etc for their salad, meanwhile holding up the line.

Here's another good tip I learned myself. If you plan on getting an omelet, plus things from the actual buffet, get your omelet first. Usually, the omelet is steaming hot and the food in the buffet line is not steaming hot. By the time you get your omelet, then you get your food from the buffet line, the omelet has cooled down nicely for you to eat. If you get your buffet food first and then your omelet, the buffet food has likely cooled down too much.

They do it intentionally so they can get that specific item when they reach the end of the buffet. I really think they should be banned for a year for putting people's health at risk and that also goes for lazy "parents" who let their kids do that.

This is very good the rules should apply to land base buffet too. Additionally don't mix your cold and hot items on the same plate. Ladies please don't comb or shake your hair at the table, go to the rest room to do that. For everybody do not take off any articles of clothing at the table, step away from the table to do that.

0:30 *Here’s a BIG Do-and-Don’t. DON’T put utensils at the beginning of the buffet with plates. Guest will have to hold them for no reason while they browse. DO put utensils at the END of the line so they can be picked up conveniently while walking away.*

Multiple RC cruises. My complaint in the windjammer, especially breakfast, is when you’re finished eating, move on. Many sit and talk for hours as many of us are looking for a place to sit and eat but can’t find a vacant table. There’s plenty of other places to sit and talk.

That reminds me of people who bump into friends and relations in the supermarket then just stop in the middle of the aisle and start yapping - blocking the thoroughfare and making it difficult for others to get past. Sometimes there's upwards of 5 people standing there just having a social gathering. Strangely, many people think this is ok.

Make sure you recognize crew members at the buffet. One passenger made a bad mistake when she assumed that my wife, dressed in a white blouse and dark slacks, was a crew member. She had an overloaded tray and approached my wife, telling her to take her tray to a table. Being Dutch and rather direct, my wife replied that the other passenger had way too much food on her tray and that she should take it to her table herself. The passenger asked to see my wife's name tag and was rather mortified to be told that she was not a crew member, but a fellow passenger. She scuttled off to her table with her overloaded tray and we descended to the main dining room for dinner.

Agreed on the whole making sure you can tell staff apart from other passengers; which should be pretty easy to do one would think. However, I myself was once mistaken for a cruise ship librarian by another passenger simply for sitting at the table the librarian normally sat in even though I was only wearing a graphic T-shirt and shorts; something no crew member would be allowed to wear during working hours. Now normally I would not have sat there but when I first entered the library all of the other seats were taken. So I'm just sitting there minding my own business enjoying a book I checked out when this lady walked in asking me if I could open up a locked shelf that had a book she wanted. See once the library is closed all of the shelves that have the books are locked. I had gotten my book out before the librarian locked up everything. Anyway, I had to tell the poor lady that I wasn't the librarian, but a fellow passenger, so I had no access to the books. The woman was annoyed. But yeah how could you mistake someone dressed super casually for a crew member? I mean I was pretty engrossed in my book. What employee would be reading during work time anyway?

My wife is handicapped in a scooter. Because cruise lines no any longer have trays , this makes it almost impossible to go through a buffet. The only exception that we have found after going on many cruises on all the main line cruise lines is Disney Cruise Line. A crew member always offers to go through the buffet with her to assist. We give the crew member a generous tip.

interestingly, I never save a seat and imo this should only be done by an actual person that is part of a group. I've never considered plopping my stuff down at some table and using it to hold my table. Not sure I agree with this practice except for when there are many tables available, but perhaps there is a particular one that you like.

If you're an evening main dining room user you'll recognize the same service staff at the buffets taking care of customers. Try to remember you servers' names (they make a habit of remembering yours, so it seems only fair) and greet them with a smile and their name when you recognize them. Cruise line staff work hard and they deserve kindness.

Respectfully, I totally disagree with your first recommendation. Especially at busy times holding a table before getting food makes that table unavailable to people with food looking for a table. In some, or many, cases by the time one gets their food, another party could have sat and eaten. I’ve run into this issue more at Disney Parks than on my two cruises (on NCL and Disney, not Royal Caribbean). I find it very rude to hold a table in a busy area when not eating.
@caolkyle7 ай бұрын
Interesting take, I can appreciate having a catch up session without eating is rude to hold the table. Just off my first cruise and in the morning we’d find a table first as was always busy for breakfast and then my wife will go get something and then I’d go when she’s back or place my bag/drink bottle at the table to show it’s occupied.

I wish buffets had "social seating" sections or something. Like a small section with tables that seat 4 or more people, but the expectation is that other guests may join your table if there are free seats. you could also put cards on the larger table that guests can display signaling that they are willing to accept random dining partners. A lot of the time I notice that couples are seating themselves at tables that can accommodate 4 people, meaning that 2 full seats are just being left empty because nobody wants to be rude and intrude. A simple solution would just be to have MORE 2 person seating options, of course... but I think it would be a great opportunity to allow for some early natural socialization. Especially for first time cruisers or more introverted people who might have trouble approaching people. Many of my best cruise friendships started in the main dining room at our table, and I think the ultra-casual atmosphere of the windjammer would be a great place for the same kind of blind socialization. Of course families and groups can still take all 4 seats. it's not reserved or anything. But it would just be a more efficient use of seating

Glad you mentioned about _Not_ reusing the plate! Granted the last buffet I went to was pre-pandemic, but having been bought up with a strong sense not to be _wasteful_ that's been my default behavior for the whole of my life! 😳 Also: Thinking of another comment here about people standing trying to decide _what_ to eat and holding up the line; Is it acceptable to walk past the queue to see what's on offer first and making your choices _before_ joining the queue? 😇

It has been a state law in Kentucky to get a clean plate with every visit to the buffet for at least 50 years. I always did even before that.

@@Musicchick60 In the UK either is regarded acceptable unless signage states otherwise. Overall plate reuse is viewed OK _provided_ you're adept at serving new helpings onto your plate whilst avoid cross-contamination i.e. by pouring or dropping the food a short distance onto your plate from the spoon or tongs. 👍

LMAO, cruise ship buffets are why I don't want to go on a cruise. I've heard nonstop horror stories from Reddit on this very topic. The worst offenders are repeat cruisers who want all of their favorites. How do they keep them? They spit on or lick the snacks/ dishes they want so they can come back and get them. One cruiser saw a woman pick up a few desserts, lick them and put them back on the plate. Even parents whose children do it won't stop them and say stupid excuses like "Oh, he's only nine, stop being cranky." I still refuse to go on a cruise when idiots like these are getting others sick like this.

I witnessed a middle aged woman licking the little pouring spout on the top of various sauces, to what I assumed, to taste-test the contents. It was disgusting. Fortunately, I don't use bottled sauces to flavor my food. I reported it to a worker but he looked at me like a dear in the headlights. I never trusted the buffet again other than the omelet station. This was 3 years ago and it still makes me ill. There are some nasty and despicable people on those cruise ships. The staff who are working who have no training nor authority to address these issues are not responsible because, I assume, they can't verbally communicate or assist in these matters. I don't blame them. Supervision or leadership is nowhere to be found on some of these ships. Even that's understandable because they would be overwhelmed with numerous behavioral issues. We've been cruising for many years and I'm a retired US Navy veteran, served on 4 combat ships, 15 years combined sea duty, and all of my ships could be considered hospital operating rooms compared to some of these dining experiences on a cruise ship.

The Washy Washy ladybugs singing and reminding people to wash their hands before eating. This lady walked in, whispered to her husband that she wasn't washing her ands because she did that before she left her room😳😐 Then, the same day, when I walked into rhe Windjammer, I saw one of the people in my group walking around the buffet, so I asked her where they were sitting. And as she's telling me, this little boy is behind her and he sneezed into his hand, then proceeded to pick up the tongs with that same hand.😖 I just make it a habit to ALWAYS keep hand sanitizer on me and in my car and after touching anything, to sanitize my hands because people don't care.
