@magnificenthonky2 жыл бұрын
The lights were usually hidden for aerodynamics. Though, on some luxury vehicles, such as the 77 Continental Mark V, it was more of a fashion statement with no practical purpose (Look what my car can do 😝). However, since molded headlight assemblies were foolishly allowed into existence, headlights no longer denigrate the aerodynamics of a vehicle, so pop ups are pointless. I do miss the old glass, sealed beam headlights. Replacing bulbs could be done quickly, it was inexpensive, and the glass didn't oxidize. Modern headlamps are ugly as sin (which, at least, matches the aesthetics of the rest of the pile of junk, in which they have been integrated), the cheap plastic degrades quickly, the bulbs are a hassle to replace, and the assembly replacements are expensive, especially the higher grade ones that should last longer than 6 months.

The wing window design was great for hot or mild weather because depending on how far you opened it it would make a circular breeze that actually injected cooler air from outside in a circle that actually went around all passengers rear and front and then exited out the same Wing window on the back side of the wing window. And you could use either one to reverse the circle flow depending on who was hot or cold. And they were still a lot of cigarette smokers back then and these windows when cracked open about an inch beside the driver or passenger whichever one was smoking would it automatically pull probably 90 to 95% of the smoke out of the car do that Wing window plus random floating ashes in the air that came off cigarette. The "appeal" of automatic seat belts is known: the US government at the time mandated supplemental restraint systems - automakers either had to install SRS airbags (driver/passenger) or automatic seat belts. It was cheaper to do the latter, so that's why they showed up. However, airbags became the norm as the costs and demand came down.

It makes no sense that someone in the UK has never seen one. I've seen a few BRITISH cars with bench seats in the front before including Land Rovers.

Damn, those velour seats look amazingly comfortable. And AC is standard now, who cares if they get hot. I'd love to see a big velour bench seat. You (and a friend) could probably have a good nap on one of those. I can live without the center console.

Manual transmissions are the most missed standard item because of so many advantages while driving (now it turns out to be the best antitheft device against young burglars). Also, I loved popup headlights on my 1988 Honda Accord; the alleged safety issues were entirely without merit. In the end, it simply cost more to manufacture and repair popup headlights with a perceived weak demand.

I collect classic cars. Only American and German though. Manuals I prefer. And I call them my millennial antitheft device

I'm STILL rockin' my 2006 Ford F-150. It has 5 on the floor. Or what they call 4 speed manual, with overdrive.

Yeah...I leave my manual running while I run in the post office to get my mail. I figure any young punk tries to steal my car they'll be in AND out by the time I get back. 😎

@@erickricharson5196 I know of more young people who use a manual vehicle than I know of older people. In fact all the old people I know have not used a manual transmission since they were young. Yet I know of lots of young people who love manual transmission and refuse to own a car or truck without it. So that might not work out well as you hope.. lots of kids are into cars.

Another thing that I though would be mentioned when he brought up the station wagon is the rear facing 3rd row seats. I'm guessing they aren't up to safety code anymore but I remember riding in those rear facing seats as a kid fondly.

Me too, and getting truckers to honk at us, those were the days! Also my mom couldn’t reach us to smack us with her flip flop either!👍🏻

I remember one of GM's station wagons still had those as late as '92 or '93. The only thing close to that afterwards were the drop down jumpseats in the series I Land Rover Discovery. But those were only for kids. I could barely fit in the seats of the demo I saw at a car show. On the other hand, Land Rover was smart to include a retractable rear step for the kids.

It's called a "glove box" because calling it an "owners manual, registration, insurance card, phone charger, first aid kit, and anything else you can fit in there box" is way too long of a name

I'm old enough to remember the actual Woody cars. Actual wood panels on the sides of the cars. They were primarily in the 30s and 40s and a couple in the early 50s.
