Hello There. Thank you for the video series. Really helpful. Just need some advise on a migration which i will be working on in few weeks. We have a Prod as well aa DR environment where the Prod environment is running on a two node IBM hosts with IBM SAN connected as DAS. The DR just has one host and local storage is being used. We are about to purchase new hardware which will be the Lenovo hyperconverged and the storage will be VSAN. The esxi environment is version 6.5 as well as the vcenter. I want to know if i need to need to migrate the vm’s from the existing environment to the new environment do i just upgrade the existing vcenter to 7 and add the new hosts to the existing cluster or build a new vcenter 7 on the new VSAN cluster and do the migration? Can i add the current hosts to the new VSAN environment and do the migration? Quite confused on this. Also as the DR has just one host and will be replaced as well being local storage and no vcenter how do i migration vm’s to the new environment? Veeam one off backup? Appreciate if you can provide some suggestions here? Much appreciated and stay safe. Cheers

Hi P A, Thank you so much for your positive feedback and below are the details for your review. Existing Infrastructure details : Prod Site : IBM Hosts - 2 IBM SAN - 1 DR Site : Host -1 Local Storage Software Versions : ESXi 6.5 vCenter 6.5 Future Plan: Going to include new Hardware with HCI Available Solutions: • To support with new ESXi hosts version 7.0 U3 hardware better to upgrade the existing infra first. • Upgrade existing vCenter from 6.5 to 7 & Upgrade existing 2 ESXi hosts from 6.5 to 7 • Upgrade the Datastore Version, VMs VMware Tools Version & VMs Hardware Version (Optional) • Verify the existing hardware & New Hardware compatibility, If it is supported. Add the New ESXi host to the same cluster. • In some cases, Enable EVC mode at the Cluster level and add the new ESXi hosts. • In case of any compatibility issues, Better to create a new Cluster and Add the new ESXi hosts. • VMs Can be migrated freely old ESXi host to New ESXi Host when we meet VMotion Conditions. vSAN Requirements: • The existing Two ESXi hosts should have flash or Hybrid mode drives to contribute storage to the vSAN Cluster. • But if we do not have a local SSD or Flash drive also, still it can be supported to add it to the vSAN Cluster. DR Exercise : Solution:1 • Create a new Datacenter in the existing vCenter and Add the DR ESXi host • We can use any third-party or existing backup tool or Veeam for DR exercise. Solution 2 • If you plan to buy an additional node in DR Site • We can set up Stretched cluster between Prod & DR Site. • To do the Stretched Clustering for both sites should have equal nodes. @@gnancloudgarage Thank you very much for coming to back to me on this. Really appreciate it. I do not want to add the DR host to the vcenter and also not keen in doing the stretch cluster scenario. Is there anyway we can copy the vm from the existing DR host to the new DR host? Should i stand up another vcenter in the DR and do vmotion between the two hosts? Thank you in advance.

Hi P A, Yes, we can do it. Solution :1 • Add the host to the existing vCenter and do the VMotion of VMs. Or Alternatively, Solution:2 • Setup new vCetner • Add the DR ESXi host • Download Cross vCenter Workload Migration Utility • flings.vmware.com/cross-vcenter-workload-migration-utility • It will help us to easily migrate Multiple VMs from a GUI mode between vCenter servers using the Cross-vCenter vMotion feature. @@gnancloudgarage Hello There. I just want vm’s from the existing DR host migrated to new host without touching any intervention of the production vcenter. So can i setup vcenter on the existing DR host and add the new host and then do a vmotion of vm’s between them? Thank you again
