I was fortunate to watch this show live. It took place near Khanna in Kolkata, perhaps in 2008. I hardly knew then that this girl would reach such heights, but I could make out that she is not just another ordinary kid. She did a massive performance that day. And of course nothing much to say about her super talented dad. Kudos to you Mohini !

I recently met a bassist who says he can play everything Victor Wooten does. Well...he would shit himself seeing Mohini and her dad. Legends dont need statements of words when their legacy is of deeds. What a gift in her and God bless the dad for letting her grow. I wish I could touch his feet and have both of them bless my guitars...for they are Gods of this instrument.

A great teacher can teach many things. But there are a few things a teacher can't teach... and it is like that in music... that is how to be at one with your instrument. There's a difference between being able to play a song on an instrument and making that instrument sing from one's soul. But somehow, the Deys all seem to be able to make their instruments sing! Maybe it's genetics... maybe fate... or a gift from God (depending on one's worldview)... clearly a gifted family!

I'm just curious; how did the American Funk of the seventies, find it's way into the hearts of todays' players from India? And I never knew Mohini Dey had a father who apparently is also, a learned and studied bass player(who apparently taught his daughter, all-or most-of what she knows)). I speak as an African-American bass player, who has seen the 'times' change; I never made it, the way some people have in this world-but I(and so many others from the Black community)had something to say on the bass guitar also-when it was all about the Funk. I'm in my 60s now, and for me, a lot of what used to inspire me is now just "old news", as far as bass playing goes; I believe all such is attributable to the fact that as you get older, you OUTGROW certain things-and-having experienced that which has already been(the funk and progressive R&B movements/music of the late 1960s to the mid 1980s), you look for something else to continually stimulate you to remain a musician. For me, that next level of stimulation came from jazz(which I began to play in the late 90s, after being with "the funk" for over twenty years). I also, never abandoned "the funk", but the physical demands of learning and playing jazz(through learning to play the upright bass), demanded and took more physical effort to learn-compared to being self-taught on the bass guitar(which I was)-coupled with the continual adversity I experienced from Satan and his emmisaries, who RULE THIS WORLD IN DARKNESS-well, it forced me to give a priority to the one(jazz)and relegate less time to the other(Funk and R&B); understand; I realize this may not be the case for everyone who decides to balance both worlds(straight-ahead Jazz and Funk)-but it was the case for me. And I still play jazz-but there is a "seal" around me(or is it within me?)to where I am no longer able to play the bass guitar(the funk)with the ease and level of facility that I once used to(which is another story in itself)-I also stopped playing music for about seven years(which, again, is also, another story, which I will not spend time here, talking about), having recently returned to the life of being a musician, some months ago. Why did I return to playing music(guess what?-another story which I won't go into at this time). With that-I hope someone/anyone who sees this will gain some type of insight from all of what I had to say, yes? And I know Satan's people are monitoring this-(in fact, they are now trying to PREVENT me from posting this)-but I don't care-I think all of what I had to say, falls under the aegis of being "confessional", where you just don't give a "fuck" anymore-and hope that someone will learn and be inspired from what someone my age(and with my experience)had to say, about all of what they have been through, in this life. And yes, I could write a book about so much of what I've seen and heard-and witnessed-but that's another matter, of which time will reveal, whether I should or should not write such a book. Hopefully someone has been enlightened therefore, by all of what I had to say, this day. P.S.: I also encounter adversity(from Satan and his invisible kingdom of demons)when playing the upright bass, and greatly so at that, but the adversity is greater, when I try to play the bass guitar; just thought someone would like to know this also... Posted 8 Nov 21.

Kolkata (where this is taking place) used to be capital of British India and had a very big club and pub scene since forever. Kolkata radio plays jazz, western classical as much as it does pop, Bengali and Hindi music. I used to have a folk/country band in early 2000s, so you could even go genre deep. Kolkata produces a phenomenal number of musicians and music training of some kind is must for every middle class kid.

@@mewtubeofficial MIDDLE CLASS? I AM AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN WHO CAME FROM "CIRCUMSTANCES OF POVERTY"-LIKE MOST BLACKS OF MY AGE AND GENERATION-AND IN SPITE OF THIS WE MADE GREAT STRIDES-TO THE DEGREE THAT WE CREATED THIS MUSIC THAT OTHER PEOPLE AND NATIONS ARE NOW EMBRACING AS THEIR OWN-WITH AS YOU SAY A "MIDDLE CLASS" UPBRINGING, OF WHICH MOST BLACKS OF MY AGE AND GENERATION DID NOT COME FROM-NOR COULD RELATE TO(AND STILL CANNOT IN SOME CASES). 3-19-22.
@mewtubeofficial2 жыл бұрын
@@charlesbrazell2136 I know the history of American music. Indian poor could never afford instruments like that. Indian poverty is of a different kind and scale. e.g. You can buy a very basic guitar with one day's minimum wage in USA. To buy an Indian harmonium or tabla, you have to give 3 months wage. In India labour is cheap. In America products are cheap. So you will get a lot of brilliant singers in all economic classes (singing doesnt cost a kidney), but not musicians. Having said that, it's actually so impressive how much music and arts the black Americans have contributed. Specially in terms of very distinct genres if you include reggae. The others being RnB, jazz, Hip hop. I think complex African drum sections could be the basis of this diversity.
@charlesbrazell21362 жыл бұрын
@@mewtubeofficial Let us be CLEAR about the HISTORY of the matter of which you speak-in spite of the fact that we may have been able to afford instruments your people were never able to afford, your people have risen in such numbers that they are able to come to this country and attain to an educated lifestyle(i.e. scientists and doctors)that my people, though we have been here for CENTURIES-have not, by VIRTUE OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF AN HISTORIC, AND CONTINUED, UNRELENTING OPPRESSION, been able to attain to-are we clear about that sir? Therefore do not play the "we have had to overcome hardship" or "we are middle-class" as though that somehow makes you better than us game with me! Because while you may know the "history" of American music, do you fully understand or know-or even care to know-the length, depth and breadth of the madness and oppressive circumstances me and my people have had to deal with-continually-since we were brought here, as slaves? When you are ready to deal with me on that level-then I will engage with you on a level of discussion that may be of mutual benefit to both your people and mine-which I don't believe is the case at this time-nor ever has been-if I am wrong about this, please ENLIGHTEN me as to the facts...3-19-22.

@@charlesbrazell2136 I didnt say we are middle class. We have all classes. But only middle class can afford instruments, because of the cost ratio. I have no comparisons to draw here. Obviously they are not comparable circumstances. I wanted to explain to you how the music is prevalent. Ours is a completely different history full of invasions but we were not transplanted. We are proud of who we are. You go be proud of who you are. I have no reason to belittle you. But may be looking at how races are constantly compared in USA, you thought that's where I was coming from. You picked up on a tone I didnt imply. On the contrary I thought you would excited that a city is invested in music. That's all. Don't feel bad. This was not written to make you feel bad.
