Fantastic video, thank you. Where did you get that rubber dust collector adapter for the dust exhaust? Did you cut that out of a rubber cap yourself? I have the jointer planer combo of this machine and have been meaning to make a better solution to connect dust collection.

Thanks Owen. It confused me when I was getting started until I figured out this marking method. Learning to read the grain before starting the milling process by face jointing not only gives you a better surface cut but also reduces wear on your machine knives. good idea to post this explanation. i was taught by my gaffer to always mark grain direction before milling (i use an arrow, but i think i may just use your sign now as its one stroke compared to two of a pencil) having grain direction clearly marked makes the whole assembly process easier as grain direction is consistent on the finished piece, which is very important for the best result. i am also glad to see i am not the only one on youtube who dimensions to final size on the thicknesser rather than the table saw.

My Hitachi P100F does a fantastic job on edges. I often make a rough size cut on my table saw or more likely on the Hitachi CB75F resaw machine and then make a single pass on edge to get to s4s. The finish is great. That machine just had its 30th birthday recently.

It was not the right machine for me. The bed was too short and I never used the planer, and it was difficult to keep in alignment. The new Grizzly 12" spiral head is really a joy to work on.

Allen, Thanks for explaining the grain on jointer and planer. Your Planer has the spiral cutter. I’m new at wood working and just got a Ridgid and wondering if you think/recommend upgrading to a spiral cutter in my Ridgid? THANKS Ray

My jointer has the spiral cutter. My Hitachi planer has conventional hhs knives. My planer has super high quality Japanese steel knives that are easy to sharpen and easy to reinstall perfectly into the machine and the cut quality is fantastic since I never let the knives get dull. For me the jointer is more important to be spiral since it is spinning at a much slower speed and is more of a work horse wrt prepping lumber for projects.
