I just bought one of these but with the garded shackle. The bidding it’s nothing amazing, but but for a noob like me it should be just fine. It was a nice surprise when I noticed counter rotation, didn’t expect any spools. Now I’m strugling with the tight keyway tho

I love spools. They're fun to pick, they talk back to you a lot.

I thought that I had a couple of those but never noticed any spools. The model numbers are a bit different. Mines are marked YE1/XX. I checked Yale's website and those appear to be following model in security. Well, now I have to get me a couple of those.

Bill, I am doing your lock lab course. The Abus are my favorite so far, pick them sort of just like that. (55/40 & Titallium) Master 17 & 532, just have not had any feedback yet... and have been on them for a long, long time :/ the 532 you did the vid of you could of thrown it down a hallway and pop open for you. I am closer on the 532

Hi Bill, what camera are you using for your videos?

I have a feeling the last clip with the explosion is made with your rocket launcher. I am assuming that you are armed like a prepper and that you have a hidden gun in every room of your house(s).

Great video bill. One question, you talk very highly on the sparrow kits but i dont see them in use. Just curious why? Thanks
@bosnianbill7 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? I have SEVERAL Sparrows picks and use them often: The Bogota (0.015" & 0.025"), Worm (0.015" & 0.025"), Attila, Tron, and the three SSDev hooks. In addition, virtually all my tensioners are from Sparrows.

bosnianbill Would like to see you revisit some of your early vids. Need more super easy SPP vids. 101 level stuff. Your later stuff is very impressive.

I am new to picking and thought maybe somebody here can help me. I have spend at least 6 hours total in attempts to learn to pick 3 different Master Locks open reliably. I have mainly focused on attempting to rake them open, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to rake them open reliably. It is incredibly frustrating, as I have read and watched on KZbin that raking should open Master Locks in seconds whereas I have literally spent hours without an open! I haven't been completely unsuccessful--I have gotten several opens, but it's very inconsistent and unpredictable. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong here! I use light tension and repeat the raking process as shown by countless videos on KZbin. I am at a loss, but I am close to giving up the hobby because it is incredibly frustrating to spend hours on something that should be accomplished in seconds, even by a beginner with no skills. Can anyone offer any advice? This is driving me nuts.
@smuckerst83557 жыл бұрын
When you see people on youtube raking they have probally raked that lock 100 times before the video even begins. Also raking is a skill like picking, it may look easy but it can be really hard. Try using another rake maybe. Keep at it.

If it makes you feel better when I first tried I had worked on the lock for so long that when I finally got the lock, I had worn down the keypins to the point the key could hardly open the lock.

caveman123ization - Hey, I feel your pain. I've been picking a little over a year and I'm just now starting to feel like I'm getting the hang of some of it. First off, you said that you have three different Master Locks. Are they different models? Some models are definitely harder to open than others. Stick with good ole' POS Master #3's until you start feeling you've made some progress. That said, I've got several #3's and one of them I still can't open to save my life. Secondly, experiment with tensioning. After a year, I watched KZbin videos specifically about judging tension. I made a long wrench and hung a US penny on it so that it could be moved back and forth like the weight on a balance scale. I quickly discovered that what I thought was "light" tension was really pretty heavy. I was using it for SPP'ing but I'm sure it's worth a try for your raking, too. It made "light" and "heavy" more quantitative for me. Also, this channel has at least one video showing Bill going through a succession of methods to try and open a lock. He tries zipping, raking, rocking, raking with a Bogota, etc. in rapid succession and keeps up his usual great comments on what he's doing and why. His point is that it IS very frustrating to keep trying the same thing over-and-over without success. (In fact, isn't that one definition of "insanity")? It can definitely kill your confidence and take all the fun out of this very challenging hobby. He suggests trying everything you know how to do and, if it doesn't work, put that lock aside until your skills have improved enough to tackle it again. A U.K. picker answered a similar question from me, on the same topic, by cautioning me to take many of the videos on KZbin "with a large grain of salt". It may really be easy for the poster to open a lock but you really never know how many times they've tried off camera or without posting a failure. It's to Bill's great credit that this channel includes many "whupped by" videos admitting his occasional failures. He's one of the best and he can't open every lock -- no one can. Finally, I once struggled with trying to SPP an old Master Lock for a couple of hours. It finally occurred to me to tension it counter-clockwise. Bam! Just like that it popped open! I've been able to repeat opening it counterclockwise but haven't opened it once, yet, clockwise. Locks are intricate mechanisms made as cheaply as possible and they all have their quirks. If something doesn't work, try a different approach. I hope some of this helps. I, too, thought about giving up on picking but I held on and have started enjoying it more and more. It's a lot like playing a musical instrument. You have to be patient, practice and work for the long term. Good luck and happy picking.

What models of MasterLock? You should see somewhere something like "No 3" or "No 140". There are Masters with spools and even serrated pins -- they're not all as bad as the No 3, and Bill even has a video somewhere showing the progression of difficulty mostly using MasterLocks. In general, make sure you're placing the right amount of tension, that you're really tensioning and aren't snagged on the keyway, and try different types of movements and change up the force you apply.
