Having been brought up at Sharpness I see the difference since the 1950s and 60s. Then the dock was busy with ships carrying lumber and grain. The canal to Gloucester would have up to 20 tanker barges traveling north after each tide. Then we would swim in the canal and play football on the sand banks in the river. At that time the Training ship Vindicatrix was moored on the canal above the lock in the dock, it trained thousands of boys aged 15 and above for the merchant navy. There are a lot of books about Sharpness docks and the canal so it was not always a run down dump.

It was so still and so beautiful...lovely. I've always wanted to investigate the Purton Ship Graveyard which is close to this canal. Maye this year...

For the benefit of anyone touring to the G&S, there's a couple of places near to the canal that you may want to visit. Within a couple of miles of Sharpness is Berkeley, where you will find Berkeley Castle, not a real castle as such, but a castellated mansion of impressive proportions, built with a moat which is normally dry, but can be flooded if the peasants start to revolt. It dates back to 1067, although most of it was built in the 14th century, and it's famous (infamous) for supposedly being the place where Edward II was murdered. The other place of note is the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's sanctuary at Slimbridge, which is accessed by a road that crosses the G&S canal at Shepherd's Patch, one of the swing bridges (I think it's called Patch Bridge). While you'd need a taxi to get from Sharpness to Berkeley, the WWT sanctuary is walkable. Don't go there if you don't like birds...

There is a tiny length of canal opposite Sharpness at Lydney, the locks and basin have been restored and there’s one mile of canal beyond. I explored it the spring you guys were first on the boat. I think it falls just outside of your navigable waterways challenge, it doesn’t really go anywhere. I didn’t even know it existed until we went there.
@MinimalList4 жыл бұрын
Ooh, nice one visiting there! We’d read it was open, but there was no chance Jo’d let me cross the Severn there. Sadly there’s a few disconnected waterways we’ll miss like that! M

Good trip that. Look forward to when we do it. The canal reminds me of the Aire & Calder. Nice and wide, not much traffic and plenty of mooring spots.

It was really lovely, though as it's still classed as a "working canal" -- there's still a couple of large shipments of industrial parts a year -- you're not allowed to moor anywhere but designated locations... which definitely aren't too few and far between, but you could imagine they might be in the busy season. Enjoyed this. Really strange seeing you both on my home patch. The fee for the maritime museum lasts a year and includes entrance to the canal museum in Ellesmere Port. So, it is pretty good value. I was out on the G&S on Tuesday. It was like glass and there was only us there. The wind can be a problem. Mrs Mouse can get bounced about a bit. Off to Gloucester docks in two weeks. You went past the other end of the canal that came off the Thames a few weeks ago - at Saul Junction. Here called the Stroudwater Canal.

I clicked everything, but ended up disliking the video and unsubscribed, so I had to click everything a second time. Is the Gloucester and Sharpness shallow like a canal or deeper and more riverlike? It's certainly flat and still, mill ponds have nothing on it. Your mention of railway carriages being restored got me interested, and I discovered a website for the Vale of Berkeley Railway who are based on/near Sharpness docks; or past and future railway, mostly just plans and fundraising at present: "Our aim is to reopen the Sharpness branch line, in Gloucestershire, to passengers as a heritage railway tourist attraction, rebuilding some of the key structures that once adorned this historical joint GWR & LMS Severn & Wye Railway."
