What a great idea! I have been known to bring my 5 hens into the house (and the AC) during HOT weather. They sit on the back or an old recliner. I put old towels on the back of the recliner, and newspapers on the floor behind the chair.

thankyou! I live in a hot environment too. This is a great idea I never thought of. My chickens DO pant in the heat of the day, even in shade. I got a IGLOO cooler and bought some chicken water nipples that they peck at, drilled holes in the cooler, and put an aquarium grade silicon sealant around it, and I can add Ice to their drinking water and it doesn't melt for several hours. But I will definitely be doing this too. I also bought 2 of those Car Windshield insulators, and attached them to the roof of my coop with the reflective side UP. It dropped the temp. inside the coop by several degrees.

What a great tip! Thank you! I’m new to chickens and live in a very hot climate in the summer. I was going to do misters but that really wouldn’t keep them cool as well as this. Thanks again!

Thanks for the info! I'm in Tucson and have been trying to keep my hens cool and this is all so good to know. I spray them down with water every half hour or so, and give frozen treats but they don't seem to like the hose much and I feel bad about that. But, I think this will work!

It's my understanding that if their feathers get wet, it makes it harder for them to cool down, because then they can't fluff their feathers and create the little air pockets between feathers, which is how they cool themselves. Cooling their legs and feet, and drinking ice water, helps. I put frozen bottles of water, wrapped in cloth, for them to stand on, ice in their drinking water, and shallow saucers of water where they walk. Also use a box fan. I'm going to try this bricks-in-water tray.. It sounds great. I live in inland So Cal, and our temps can also get up to 117°- 120°. I have red jungle fowl, They are panting in high nineties, and collapsing at 101°. I brought them in the house to the a/c. Much better than trying to revive a dying chicken.

Very awesome idea! Mine will stand in water - we have ducks so we put out large tubs of water and the chickens see the ducks standing in the water all the time, but you're right, that's a great idea to entice them to stand in the water.

I live in East Mesa, and this is my first year with hens. My 12 x 12 coop is just covered with the green garden meshing. I will try this mortar tub/ brick set-up for my girls. Do you know if I should bring in, and attach a fan for additional air circulation? Also, that garden looks great. Tomatoes and Okra. My grandmother would be right at home.

Thanks so much for posting this, VERY useful information. Quick question: How "swampy" does this get? I would guess that your girls spend quite a bit of time in their "swamp cooler" and it might get (more than) a little poopy. How often do you have to dump to keep the smell reasonable?

Keep making videos because I want to know more about chickens and what you use for fertilizer and chicken feed? Also have you ever had a chicken lay a soft egg? Anyways I am going to start posting videos to my own personal KZbin channel so maybe if you follow me and I follow you we can be successful with community help from each other! Thank you
