There are thousands of things I love about our John Deere 2210 sub-compact tractor. But there are these 5 annoying things that have bothered me since the beginning!
1. Fuel fill location
2. Deck height adjustment
3. 3 Point setup (turnbuckles and deck lift)
4. Headlights
5. Hydraulic ability

I agree with your complaints, I could actually add a few. Unsure if you have found then since this video was released, but there is a LED upgrade for the headlight that makes a world of difference. As far as fueling, I use a big funnel and a "milk crate" to fill it. Not ideal but it works.

1- you nearly have to split the tractor to replace the plastic transmission fan... which will absolutely break, if you're doing dirt work on a machine with an older/brittle fan. 2- Those weirdly kinked lift links on the 3ph, are UNGODLY expensive. Side note: if you need to take the jerk out of the hydraulics, there's a lift speed adjustment in front of the seat.

I have one and it’s been really reliable at starting and running smoothly. BUT, the engineering “quirks” that you have pointed out absolutely drive me up a wall. It’s pretty obvious that the guys in the design department don’t have much field and actual seat time on this tractor. The mower deck does pretty good, but the system for linking/raising & lowering it is garbage.

I bought mine in 2003 and it has been a really good tractor, but I have to agree with you on every point. For me I have to add a #6 thing that was a pain in the butt about this machine, is there is 2 u joints, one in the front down below the steering and one underneath the deck below the seat. They built this thing so you could not get to them without disassembling the whole top of the tractor. The u joints they used put the fitting in a place where the grease gun would not fit. Mine started vibrating really bad because the u joints were completely shot because they had never been greased so I had to tear it down. I drilled 2 holes in the frame so I could get to them to service.
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 11 ай бұрын
I've not properly greased that u-joint under the seat since I've owned the machine. I know I'm asking for future problems. But now that I have the Curtis Cab installed, I'd have to totally take it off and then take off the base of the machine to get to that point. Horrible engineering for an item that needs maintained.

Please don’t take this as a dig... A couple of years ago I traded a Kubota BX24 for a BX23S. (Newer version of the same sub-compact TLB.) The older tractor had none of those faults except... the Mickey Mouse lights. I thought surely the new version had fixed them. Nope! The lights are brighter but, they are still blocked by the loader. What they did was to add a plug and hole in the ROPS to allow you to add more lights. I added two forward and one rear facing work light as soon as I got it home. Thanks for sharing your peeves!

@@PurpleCollarLife yes... it has a Slid Steer Quick Attach... the old tractor bucket was direct pinned. They seem to have increased the hydraulic pressure slightly to make up for the extra length. It evens out to about the same lifting capacity. About the only place where I notice the increase is when mowing leaves. On the BX24 with 60” belly mower and PTO powered TracVac behind it would bog down. I noticed that when mowing uphill especially. I don’t notice it as much with the BX23S. Both have the same engine and hydraulic systems. Parts are fully interchangeable... even though they are 14 years apart. As far to the grapple, backhoe, roto-tiller, box blade, rear blade or bush hog go, I can’t tell a difference. Power and response are about the same.

For fuel filling, sure a pump is nice, or get yourself a $7 “siphon shaker hose”. Set the jug on the hood, stick the hose in and go do something else for 4 minutes. Can you have faster hydraulics that are less jerky? Seems like a contradiction, maybe not if you have a sophisticated control valve.

Oh wow - this should get lots of opinions! For me, there are a lot of things that factor in - price, local dealer, easy repairs, reliability, functionality, options/features, match with my needs. I will tell you that I'm doing a lot of research right now on tractors a bit larger than mine. I haven't really ruled any brands out. But based on my needs and wants, I'm mostly considering a John Deere 2 or 3 Series, a Kubota LX2610 or larger (maybe an L3901), a Kioti CK2610 or CK3510, or a RK37 from Rural King. But my research process is long and detailed, so I'm not ready to get anything new just yet. If others would weigh in, it may help me decide also!

Back when we had the Ford tractor, I filled it up standing on the foot rest, it worked fine but you can't do it that way because you have a windscreen there. Adding some LEDs on your cab is the best thing because they shine from above! There is not much to expect from hydraulics at these tiny machines, but it remains annoying! As I said, nice video!

I'm with ya on the fuel filling, same with 4310, 3320 and my current 3033R. Do yourself a favor and buy a $20 battery operated pump from harbor freight or amazon, you stick the can on the floor board and you and your jackets will be much happier. On the hydraulics, dude, it's a small sub compact, more power would get it in trouble.

I bought a 2210 new in 2005 and still have and love it to this day. Having said that, I agree with all of your observations. As for the un-impressive loader lift capacity, I have a feeling that is intended as a safety "feature". I have come dangerously close to flipping the machine several times over the years with a heavy load off the ground, and if it had been more than the 750lbs that it can lift, things might have gone south much quicker. Anybody contemplating getting a 2210, in my opinion the most dangerous maintenance item to ignore is front tire pressure. A few pounds low, and the machine becomes very unstable when using the loader with any considerable weight in the bucket. It does indeed lack some of the refinements of newer machines, but in 2005 it was a ground breaker (pun intended).
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 2 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right! And it was a ground breaker not only in 2005, but it also was a groundbreaker for ME personally when I first bought my 2210. It was the first tractor I owned, or even used, that had a front end loader. It truly changes how you approach work. I've certainly saved my back many times lifting all kinds of things using that front end loader (mulch, the generator into the truck, the 5th wheel hitch out of the bed, etc.) You're also totally correct on the loader limit - on a flat solid surface I wish it would lift more. But I've had a few things in the bucket, or on the fork and been moving across uneven surfaces, or turn down a slight hill - and really almost gone forward or sideways a few times. Those are scary experiences for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting. The John Deere 2210 certainly is a great machine!

1: For fueling…get an old floor mat and lay over the grease fittings before fueling. Tractors are greasy 2: Agreed 3: Agreed, you can weld a 90 degree tab on the inside that will keep it from slipping 4: Agreed, but all tractors suffer from that 5: I’m not sure that any sub-compact is much better in the hydraulics

@@PurpleCollarLife Unrelated…. I have two JD 2305’s. Make sure you grease the drive shaft universal joints. They are hard to get to (understatement) but may save you from an expensive repair. I have one pulled apart now to put on a new hydraulic cooling fan and while I am there, I am making sure the universal joints are well lubed. I found one of the u-joints was in bad shape. If one breaks, it could damage the transmission by hitting the housing $$$$$$

I have a suggestion, keep a rag with your diesel can and when you fill your jd tank lay the rag over the grease spot. My allis Chalmers tank fill is as high as my chin and with the loader in the way it's very difficult to put a big gas can up that high. My loader is only a trip bucket so remember at least you have full hydraulics. But I've pulled a V6 , trans , and transfer case out of an explorer all still connected with mine but that did break the trip pin. Anyway my point is tractors all have faults but they are all fun right?
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right! Good idea about the rag over the greasy areas. I'm thrilled to have the loader at all. For years, we didn't have one. It's one of those things we could never do without now!

Been looking for a tractor. Getting closer. On that bracket in the back, can you take it off and have someone heat it up then bend it straight?
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 3 жыл бұрын
I know it looks like it has been bent out of place, but it's actually designed that way to allow for the sway of the three point. I have thought about straightening it, or having a plate welded on that would hold it on the arm, but haven't tried it. If it were just bent straight, I'm afraid it would not let that arm go wide when you needed it to (for instance - to connect the ballast box)

Unfortunately, the poor lighting (especially with the loader raised) is an issue with a lot of tractors. I don't know the exact replacement bulb number, but I know for a fact there are LED bulbs that replace the original ones and provide much better light output. Also, the limited hydraulic capacity is another issue with hydrostatic tractors - the engine must be run wide open for the hydrostat to build enough pressure to work efficiently (power the loader AND the transmission). For this reason alone, my uncle steered away from Deere utility tractors and bought Ford tractors with standard 4-speed transmissions and shuttle shifts when he started his landscaping business many years ago. He won't go near a hydrostatic tractor for loader work.
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I never thought of replacement LED bulbs in the tractor! Great point about the hydrostatic running the drive and the attachments. I just don't know if I want to ever go back to the manual transmission.

You cannot "work" the hydraulics at idle !!! Rpms must be above 2500 ( or 540 shown on the tach )
@PurpleCollarLife
@PurpleCollarLife 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Mr. Fudd. :) I've learned since this video, that you're right. It is best to operate the hydraulics at above idle. However, operating at the 540 PTO rpm shown on the tach is not necessary for hydraulic functions. On this John Deere 2210, that 540 PTO speed mark is at full throttle.

Hello and thanks for watching and commenting! I did a lot of research on forks before I ended up with the Artillian brand. I like the light weight design, the fact that there made in the USA, and the modular Artillian system (grapple, front hoe/stump bucket, snow plow etc. all use the same pallet fork bracket). Other brands (Titan for example) are a bit less expensive, but they don't have the modular design and they're heavier. Here's the Artillian set I have. I opted for the 3000# version because I wanted the built in receiver for my box hitch. I went with the 36" long forks. I've been happy with them. I haven't needed longer ones and in several cases have been happy they're not longer. www.artillian.com/product/fork-frame-set-with-3000-lb-john-deere-quick-attach-pallet-frame/ I hear you on the driveshaft! I've had luck with a needle attachment on a grease gun for the front zerk. I'm embarrassed to say I've never found a solution to the back zerk on my 2210 drive shaft. It's not been greased since I've owned the machine.

Good point! If I added a 6th, it was going to be the lug bolts (instead of studs through the hub). When I do my tire changeover with loaded wheels, it's hard to get them lined up and put the bolt through the holes.
