The change in two years in Stan or rather the actor Bernard Youens. Really noticeable, the weight piling on and not so sharp with his lines. He by all accounts, was the most loveliest man.

I think in 1973-1975 I notice a slight slur in his speech but his stroke in 1975 was when his health really declined afterwards.

I notice the difference in Stan, too. I'd only ever seen him in 80's episodes then saw him in 70's and noticed how much more vibrant he was then.

Ditto for Ena. She wasn’t at her best performance-wise later in the decade (because of the actor’s health problems) but from the start up until ’76-ish she was the embodiment of soap battle-axe. The actress may-or-may-not have-had health issues even in those first sixteen years but it didn’t show on-screen until it did (not that she even featured that-much thereafter).
@woohooboy

The demands of doing (what was at the time) a twice weekly television series that was broadcast all year round without a break was demanding. The decade started with the death of Arthur Leslie who died of a heart attack at the age of 70. This was followed by the passing of Graham Haberfield in 1975 at the young age of 33. Bernard Youens, Violet Carson and Margot Bryant alao suffered declines in their health during this decade which resulted in the first two having their workloads and appearances reduced and the last having to retire altogether.

Len was so nonchalant about Rita being hit, even told her to go back. I guess people thought differently about hitting women back in the day.

@Tilly Divine I think you've just sort of confirmed it. Violence in general was much more accepted then. Whether it was domestic violence, being a vigilante and taking the law into your own hands, or football hooliganism. Nowadays, we'd get the police involved. Things that people did and said in those days are often fairly shocking to today's people.

Barbara Knox confirmed that whilst Pat Phoenix was professional towards her, she wasn't exactly warm and embracing either. Being ten years her junior and another attractive fiery red hair to boot, Phoenix realized she was now competing in the spotlight with a younger version of herself. No surprise that the following year she left the program and stayed gone for the next three years after that.
