And many thanks to Lee Iacoca for approving the exception to allow the 4 speed, bucket seats and console. It was lucky that the 2.80:1 rear axle was in the car, and not the 3.28:1 that would offer a much lower top end speed. My dad bought a 1965 Mercury wagon with 390 inch engine, I would guess it has the 2.80 rear axle and auto transmission. I am happy he had a rear trunk, not the facing rear seats, basically useless extra seats.

I also have a white 1966 7 Liter Ranch Wagon that has a red XL interior but it's an A/T car with power windows. I found it in a FL salvage yard, and it was fully intact but had a blown transmission and a mild dent in L/F fender. Both easy fixes.

@@adrianclements8916 Thanks for the reply Adrian. It really takes a better man to pass such a gem on to other person instead of hoarding it and neglect it as many people do with cars that end up in disastrous condition due to that. Glad you enjoyed it for 15 years, preserving it instead of turning it into a restomod or altering it, such a rare cr should be embraced with its quirks and "flaws" that shows hom much owners have loved and enjoyed it.

I own a 69 Bonneville wagon with factory Pontiac 428 4speed. Cool to see these old behemoths survived! I bought mine off a neighbor in 1983 for $500 mainly the engine. I wanted it for a Gto We pulled it out of the garage, and the car was friggin mint! I spent most of the day pulling the transmission and putting in a new clutch. That clutch is still in that car to this day. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it!

As both a fan of Ford and Mopar I recently discovered that 4 door dodge and Plymouth’s were special ordered with Hemi’s in full and mid size and also some wagons. If you were connected the cars that don’t exist maybe about 50 maximum in 4 doors and wagons total were actually built how many still exist who knows.

@@adrianclements8916 I was watching some old 60’s Disney movies and noticed the police car was a 64 galaxy or custom with a thunder jet 427. They recycled the same police car in several Dean Jones movies from the mid 60’s. I’m guessing it was a police option vehicle. I live up in Lansing we ran across a few odd Oldsmobiles back in the 70’s. A friend back in the 70’s owned a 69 AMC Rebel Machine that didn’t exist after nearly 30 years we discovered it was a one of a handful of prototypes that when the car was delayed until 1970 they sold the prototypes at a Detroit dealership. The car ended up in Lansing y 75.

Thanks for that video. I first became aware of the car after seeing it on Tom's show. I was especially interested in it because I grew up riding in a 'dfrs' 1967 Country Sedan wagon. My Dad ordered her from Courtesy Ford in Chicago Illinois. Equipped with the 289 2bbl and a column shifted 3 speed manual. The car was a beautiful copper color (I believe it was called burnt umber) with white wall tires and the dog dish hubcaps. He wanted a 4 speed but was told it wasn't available. (He was a high school teacher with no history of fleet purchases so the Lee Iacocca connection was never made) We all drove up to the dealership in Dad's trade in, a 1960 Custom 500 2 door post sometime in July of '67. We had to wait an hour or so for them to install the AM radio which for some reason, was not in the car when delivered. The memory of our ride home on the Chicago Skyway on that warm summer evening is one I will always cherish. The car served us well until 1975 when it was traded in for a white over orange Volkswagen Bus...

I get the don't restore it attitude. Being a car restorer and hot rod builder, I lean towards partial restoration/ maintenance as including a quality paint job. Ugly paint, bad suspension bushings, holes in exhaust, drive line damaged, rodent ruined interior are all "patina" to some but I fix those issues. Some things can be overlooked as few of us can spend 6 figures on a 100% and correct restoration.

I’m a sucker for any big block 4 speed full size car. For somebody to go into a dealership and write the cheque for a car that’s only going to appeal to a very limited number of people. Even the dealers would try and dissuade you from ordering one, on the off chance you pulled out of the deal leaving them holding a tough to sell car. Sooner or later someone will do a restoration, but until then, it’s more likely to get used and seen.

My dad bought a 1967 Country Squire wagon in the late '80s. It was black with woodgrain and red interior. It had a shaker hood with the tach in the hood and 428CJ badges. I ran the VIN and determined it wasn't a CJ but the 7 Liter 428. The shaker hood, tach and hood pins were probably installed by a previous owner.The car was low mileage in immaculate condition and looked like a racing Hearse. He sold it probably 20 years ago.

@zeke7142003, I believe that you are talking about John and Ruth Stone's 1967 Ford Country Squire DFRS 4-door station wagon with VIN and production data of VIN 7U74Q159297, BODY 71A, COLOR A, TRIM 6D, DATE 19D, DSO 27, AXLE 6, TRANS U, and Registry Number 98 in the 1967 Ford Full-Size Registry. The story I heard was that it was a funeral director's car. Somebody added a bunch of non-original stuff on that car (Pontiac "428" rocker panel mouldings, shaker hood scoop, hood tachometer, simulated woodgrain steering wheel from a '67 Ford XL with the 7-Litre Sports Package, etc.). My 1970 Ford Torino GT station wagon is even more rare. 429 SCJ with drag-pack option and a 4 speed manual transmission. It was bought new at Calia Ford in Hartford, CT. I bought it in 1981 from a Pontiac/Toyota dealer in Manchester CT with 4 other cars in a wholesale package. It didn't run, had a blown clutch and a broken aluminum bellhousing. The car had 34k miles, no rust and still in good condition. I located a used cast iron bellhousing, replaced the clutch, and new dual points/condenser. It took 6 months to restore the car and mild rebuild of the engine and locate a set of 15x7 correct Magnum 500 wheels. The car didn't need much to restore it and I did a full paint job from bare metal. I still have the car and it's a joy to drive. Marti Reports told me that no such car exists. Ford Museum (MI) staff proved otherwise.

I got in an argument with a guy about such cars. I lived in Michigan for a while, near Detroit. A friend of mine is a retired Corvette engineer. There were engineers, executives, and others that had cars built with VINs that "don't exist". Cars with drivetrains that were never available that were built "on the line". No records of special orders or anything. To have one like this with records is a treasure.

@@adrianclements8916In most cases, this was just employee theft, while cars like that may have come equipped like that out of the factory, no one knew about it and the company was paid for something less. I would also guess that the engine that was supposed to go in the car went out in the back of some guys pickup, so I really don't think cars like that should count in determining provenance. I had an uncle that was a foreman at the San Jose plant that would steal engines and later sell them on the down low. What he did was not really any different.

I've seen this car at Carlisle and at the Ford 100 Anniversary. As for the seats, I wonder if they didn't match from the factory and the owner had the dealer or an upholstery shop replace the non-matching rear seat covers with ones from an XL Galaxie that would match? Anyways, it's a really cool ride! It's a shame the second owner left the car outside to deteriorate. In the 1981 photo the original paint looked pretty good. It must have been a very pretty car when new and I'd love to see it restored to original condition.

@davidtoups4684, I'm glad that you were able to see 7U74Q143183 out in the wild! The point about the seat covers is that they DID match from the factory, which is why I was questioning the point of the note on the Special Order form! The factory front bucket seats are essentially from an XL with TRIM Code "8U", and the colour and design of those seat covers are identical to the rear bench seat cover with TRIM Code "6U" that was also factory installed in the car. Anyway... I agree about how the condition suffered from being left outside. However, as with many things in life, it could have been a lot worse! Yeah I've got a 67 country squire White station wagon just as bone stock as it could be. 390 automatic column shift bench seat with the blue interior that's still remarkably shape. Who knows what the floor pans are on it it's been sitting since the car was maybe 10 years old. You want a cheap starter project? I have what I believe is to complete history of the car. Any case that's why this card Drew my attention when I was watching hagerty. Mine did not come with the simulated wood grain. Back to your car. I think it's fantastic how you kept it essentially the way you found it with the minimum of maintenance products to make it more roadworthy and usable. No I thought it was donated to a automotive college out there in Kansas???? I must be confusing the story of your car after you sold it with the story of another car of the host of the hagerty show. In any case thank you for showing us the complete story of this very unique car. I would have thought that Ford would want to put it in one of their museums. I came from a large family (eight children) and we needed a station wagon just haul all of us around. Our first SW was a 1962 Ford Falcon, 6 cylinder automatic. It barely got the job done. The next SW was a 1965 Ford Country Squire 390 4V with a Ford Cruisomatic transmission, Springtime Yellow, I think. I am almost certain the engine had a Holley carburetor on it. It also had dual exhaust. This was the first car our family bought brand new. One of my brothers dubbed it the "Queen Mary" because it was huge, compared to the Falcon. This car had way too much power for teenage boys and my father couldn't figure out why the right rear tire was wearing out so quickly. It also had to have the rear axle replaced eventually. A victim of too many attempted "Bat turns", I think (most people will not get the cultural reference there). However, it came to a bad end. In 1969 one of my brothers ran it up under a garbage truck and almost ripped the top off of it. My mother cried about the car. My brother survived the crash with minor injuries. To replace it my father bought Mom a 1967 Ford Country Sedan, 390 2V with automatic transmission. It was a bit of a let down, compared to the Queen Mary and they didn't keep it very long. The last SW they bought was a 1971 Mercury Marquis Colony Park 429 4V. This was a great "date" car, but still not the performer that the '65 was. I love me some Ford station wagons...

Great well-detailed story about a super cool car. I had the pleasure of seeing this wagon at a local car dealer show in NJ and my jaw just about dropped to the ground when I saw the interior. The car at the time had been converted to modern disc brakes that you could see through the Torq-Thrust rims. In a similar vein my dad was a stick shift guy in the early sixties and he was starting a family as well and needed a wagon. In 1969 he ordered a Chevy Caprice Kingswood Estate 9-pass wagon in Frost Green with the L48 350/300 with Muncie 4 speed from Briggs Chevrolet in South Amboy, New Jersey. My mom drove the car and shifted it by the seat of her pants because there was no tach. A new 1980 Ford LTD wagon replaced the Chevy and it was put on the front lawn for sale. I think it sold for $200. I miss that car and wonder where it ever wound up. Good Times!

It would be interesting to know how many wagons came with bucket seats and console... I'm sure that statistic would lower the number of Country Squires like the one I encountered from 1149 to a much lower number...

2packs4sure, thank you very much - I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! Yes, the Q-code "428 Thunderbird 7-Litre V-8" 345 hp engine only had an installation rate of 2.4% in the 1967 Ford Country Squire DFRS 4-door station wagon, which is 1 out of every 42 of them built. This is a lower installation rate than I would have expected, to be honest. Of the 461 station wagons currently entered in the 1967 Ford Full-Size Registry, a total of five (5) are known to have been factory built with front bucket seats, all of which are Country Squires. Of these five (5) cars, one (1) is a Country Squire 4-door station wagon (Body Serial Code "73" & BODY Code "71E") and four (4) are Country Squire DFRS 4-door station wagons (Body Serial Code "74" & BODY Code "71A". The non-DFRS one (1) has an H-code "390 Thunderbird V-8" 270 hp engine, as do two (2) of the (4) DFRS units. The remaining two (2) DFRS units both have a Q-code "428 Thunderbird 7-Litre V-8" 345 hp engine, including 7U74Q143183. Yours in old FoMoCo iron, Adrian

It is sitting here. My son has gotten married, and abandoned. I would love to go down the road in it. I hand built the wiring harness. Installed it and it ran so good. I took my son down the road. I built the 390 to 509 Hp and 488 lbs ft. With the C6 out of my 69 Galaxie and the 4.33 gears. Spartan Locker. I took him for a ride before I lost my vision. I got it up to 142 mph and my son said he was going to sell it. But he didn’t. The next time I went to drive it, the wiring harness with all of the relays, the spade fuse box, it was all gone. I can’t even start it. It is sitting here with the new Caspian Blue paint being burnt off. I taught him how to do body work and paint. It was a new car, and I can’t do a thing with or about it. He will not budge.

Did they do anything to the seat backs to prevent them from tilting forward, as necessary on a 2-door, or did they just go in as is? FWIW Ford did build a number of 1963 Country Squires with XL buckets and console. These were regular production options. Speaking of options, I wonder why the buyer skipped the Convenience Control Panel, disc brakes and power seat? Then it would have been truly loaded!

@roger628, no - the bucket seats in 7U74Q143183 were unmodified XL bucket seats, so the seat backs could be tipped forward just like on the XL 2-door hardtop and convertible. You are 100% correct that bucket seats and a console were an RPO (Regular Production Option) on the 1963 Ford Country Squire series. The build numbers are as follows: 1. Body Serial Code "76" & BODY Code "71G" - 1963 Ford Country Squire 6-passenger 4-door station wagon, bucket seats & console = 437 built 2. Body Serial Code "78" & BODY Code "71H" - 1963 Ford Country Squire 9-passenger 4-door station wagon, bucket seats & console = 321 built Compare those build numbers with the "regular" Country Squires that model year: 3. Body Serial Code "76" & BODY Code "71E" - 1963 Ford Country Squire 6-passenger 4-door station wagon, bench seat = 19,922 built 4. Body Serial Code "78" & BODY Code "71A" - 1963 Ford Country Squire 9-passenger 4-door station wagon, bench seat = 19,246 built This gives a total of 20,359 Country Squire 6-passenger station wagons for the 1963 model year, of which 2.1% had bucket seats and a console, and a total of 19,567 Country Squire 9-passenger station wagons for '63, of which 1.6% had bucket seats and a console. With installation rates that low, it's not surprising that bucket seats were not an RPO on any other 1960s FoMoCo full-size station wagons after that. As a final note, a 4-speed manual transmission was also an RPO on 1963 Ford Country Squires built with the optional front bucket seats and console. I have photos of four (4) 1963 Ford Country Squire 4-door station wagons with bucket seats and a console in my FoMoCo photo archives, and two (2) of them are 390-4V/4-speed cars. When I was small, one of the parents at my elementary school, a dentist, had a '67 Country Squire that was absolutely loaded. 428, discs, power windows & locks (CC panel) , power seat, AC, cruise, AM-FM, 5-spoke wheel covers, you name it. It was a marvel! This was unusual for Canada. The parents traded it 5 years later for a '72 Dodge Monaco wagon! I crossed paths with it again in about 1984, on the bad side of town. It was pretty run-down but still on the road. Don't know what happen to it after that.

My first car was a 1967 Thunderbird that I paid $75 for in 1978. The build sheet was under the back seat and it showed the car had every option available. It was a "Q" engine with a C6 "police and taxi" version transmission which translates to having an extra clutch plate in the forward and low reverse clutch packs. 1967's were the best running cars ever. That Thunderbird ran perfect. I used to describe it as "the gas pedal felt right".

Your amazing Country Squire sure brings back memories of one I used to own, a Dallas DSO 67 Country Squire, Burnt Amber Metallic paint with Saddle vinyl interior. It was an ultra high option wagon, probably one of a few. 428, Auto, PowerDiscs, Power Seat, AC, AM/8-track, Decor interior, under-dash Safety Convenience Control Panel that contained the switches for Power Windows and Power Door Locks, along with the Warning Lights/Flashers, Rear seats. The Decor interior had a mottled antiqued finish vinyl and fancy embossed vinyl strips across the setbacks. The front door panels had no power door switches, and only had the little vent window cranks and the factory stereo speaker grilles. I recall it had Speed Control, but might be wrong on that. I owned it from 96 to 99, bought from a buddy that had stored it for many years. The 428 had been yanked and a 390 put in its place, but everything else was in great condition, it ran and drove well. Interior was perfect. I had no idea just how rare and wonderful this wagon was, and felt at the time, it had been ruined by the engine swap. Didn't realize that Fords don't follow the "numbers matching" stuff. What a dummy I was. Sold it to a guy in California that owned a business called Wagons West. Maybe someone knows of him.

Regarding the seat trim mismatch note, I'm wondering if they had initially planned to install (for whatever reason) XL luxury group front bucket seats but later realized that the standard ones would be used.
@adrianclements8916
@adrianclements8916 11 ай бұрын
@michaelwitas9482, that's a good suggestion, but the Special Order form lists the donor XL bucket seats as coming from TRIM code "8U", which are the standard pastel parchment XL bucket seats. The Luxury Interior Trim bucket seats in pastel parchment were TRIM code "RU", so I would have expected to see that TRIM code listed on the Special Order form if they were thinking along those lines. 428 engine and a 4 speed! And the 2.80:1 rear axle, I was savoring that rear ratio, I did not know they make them that high! The top speed of 128 MPH at 4,600 RPM is wonderful. So many "Kids" want the 4.10:1 ratio, and that leads to a very low top end speed, even if it is faster off the line with the 4.10 ratio. I bet you could hold first gear until about 35 MPH? After the fuel tank repair, and you went through the gears, I wonder why you shift to 4th at less than 45 MPH? With the 2.8 rear axle ratio, you must have gotten great fuel mileage, considering the 428 can run about 1,800 RPM at 70 MPH? Or something like that. Thanks for making this wonderful and interesting video!

@Kangenpower7, the 2.80:1 non-locking rear axle was a good highway gear, but a bit of a dog off the line in that big, heavy car. Fuel mileage in the wagon was bad - feeding that 428 cubic inch engine was a full-time job! It was turning about 2,600 rpm at 70 mph with the 2.80:1 rear, versus 3,000 rpm at 70 mph with a 3.25:1 rear gear. @danielsteward5090, so far owners #2 through #5 (I was #3) haven't restored the car. Perhaps one day... If you haven't done so already, please a) check out my other videos #1 through #13, and b) subscribe so that you can be alerted as each new video is released - there are LOTS more coming! Video #14 is coming together well. Thank you, Daniel! Yours in old FoMoCo iron, Adrian

@@adrianclements8916 it is a very good survivor. I'm just a little concerned about the rust, like on the inside of the tail gate and likely the bottoms of the doors where the seals trap water.

I forget what year it was, but I distinctly remember seeing this car at a show at Ford WHQ early in your ownership, and nearly falling over myself after seeing what it was and the history behind it. It's been on a short list of personal dream cars ever since.

@etmccaus, I'm glad that the wagon made an impression on you! You must be talking about the Ford Centennial held at Ford World Headquarters from August 12-16, 2003. The photo in the upper left-hand corner starting at the 22:24 mark was taken at that show. @@adrianclements8916 I guess it could have been, but I don't know that I remember going to the centennial show...feel like it was a year or two after that, but we're talking 20 years ago at this stage, and I'm lucky if I remember what day it is today. Wish you still had it as I live roughly in your neck of the woods now and would love to occasionally see you driving it. Subscribed, though I'm probably more a Mustang/ Falcon guy at heart. Great stuff!

What an awesome video, great story. The first Ford my family owned was bought new and was a 1966 Custom. That is all I really remember as far as nomenclature goes, I was only 8 and if I remember correctly it was a 4 door, I do remember it having the 289. This was the last car my dad would buy and it was his first Ford. He was a Studebaker man. My Father passed away in October of 66, we did get to take one family vacation that summer. That was my first with a Ford and I have been a Ford owner my whole life. Wish I had this station wagon, it is unique. I thank you for sharing is lineage. Do you regret selling it?

@sfbfriend, thank you - I'm glad that you enjoyed video #12. The 1966 Ford Custom was available in two body styles only - a 2-door sedan and a 4-door sedan. I'm sorry about your dad's passing. That must have been really tough at your age back then. I don't regret selling the wagon, as I had owned it for 15 years and done a lot of fun stuff with it and my lifestyle changed significantly in the summer of 2016. If you haven't done so already, please a) check out my other videos #1 through #13, and b) subscribe so that you can be alerted as each new video is released - there are LOTS more coming! I fully appreciate the appeal of an original survivor, regardless of appearance. But... This car deserves restoration, at least of the exterior. BTW: I work part-time driving a Model T at the Henry Ford Museum / Greenfield Village in Dearborn. I know what museum I would choose!!!
