PSA has 2 modes. Reject cards because they aren't sure if something is altered and giving out 10's for what would be 9.5 and 9's from CGC, SGC or Beckett. Good for making some extra money on the side though.

A friend of mine had an 86 Jordan fleer that he personally pulled pulled from a pack in the 90s. It went into the screwholder, because of course they were the meanest, chunkiest , safest looking things there was.. The more screws the better! And PSA sent it back as altered because it actually got squished out of proportion. But at least it looked really important while it was in there!

Vintage Breaks - wow, i really hate that this is getting swept under the rug by Leighton the President of the company! Its truly disgusting. You can clearly see: **1- when Gilmore first brings the SEARCHED PACK into frame and the back shows he quickly but casually turns it over to the front as he is quite embarrased cause he in fact noticed that the back is different... amazing and this is a HUGE deal. **2 - is how the pack opens, clearly there is added glue there because it has been SEARCHED. Mostly added to the middle of the package as clearly shown. That is obviosuly NOT how wax opens. Leighton has lost so much due to his love of money you all have no idea. He needs to let Gimore go and do the RIGHT THING HERE, its a great opportunity for him to do the right thing... but apparantly Gilmore makes enough money for Leighton that he is going to cover it up and keep him on board depsite blantently stealing? Is this for real. SCR thank you for your incredible coverage and please dont go soft on us because this is devastating that Vintage Breaks has made all this money (please see their prices) and yet still has the audacity to steal from its customers along the way and cover this crap up. Mind boggling how can people still spend money there.

When I was a kid, I had a Jordan rookie in a brick screw down. I took it to a show and a potential buyer wanted to see it out of the case. When I opened the case, some of the color from the card stuck to the screw down and ruined the card. A couple days later, I checked some other cards and half of them were damaged from the screw down. No doubt if that card was in a massive screw down for years, it had some issue for sure.

Screw downs do damage cards but it's graded a SGC 9.5. SGC isn't going to give a card like that an unworthy grade. Too much scrutiny. PSA on the other hand???

Apparently, these things "out-gassed" and the album covers just permanently affixed themselves to these "protective" sleeves. Just a note regarding autographs - if you are at a convention and getting an autograph - always grab a convention program as it lists the guests. It will help provide provenance when you sell it. I always do.

The thing about screw down argument that gets me is yes they can damage cards. Smash them down/alter them, but just because your card was in a screw down doesn’t 100% mean that happened. There’s still a chance they didn’t get altered.

That pack was resealed and popping open. He noticed and pushed it down with his thumb while taking it off the camera. The owner saying “as well as I saw on the video” was complete horse crap. There is no damage that can be seen in the video. BGS also graded one of those facsimile Topps autos. It’s like they saw “Topps certified autograph issue” and sent it right through.

I removed a 68 Mantle and a Bench rookie from screwdowns just last week and they were fine. The screws weren't tight though, I must have known as a kid not to vice-press my cards. But I have heard from a dealer of PSA rejecting cards for being altered/larger than standard.

Yes. I watched an OPC Gretzky split into two, literally. The shop owner made the card owner open the brick in front of him before making any kind of deal. That said, it all depends on how long it was in the brick, how it was stored, and I don't necessarily think it always goes that way.

There's a reason the '52 Mantle ended up in an SGC holder and it's certainly not that SGC is a superior grading company. The most obvious reason is that PSA would only grade the card Mint 9. However, based on the card's appearance and the fact that many experts in the hobby have said this card is superior to the PSA 10 on display at the National, it's possible that it was altered or damaged. Either way, it wasn't a PSA 10 and it's not the finest known card. I. realize that there's some animosity and frustration with PSA within the hobby, but there's no denying that their cards consistently far outperform SGC - vintage and modern.

I had a 90's collection with some rare shiny inserts in screwdowns. They unfortunately spent a few years in a humid basement and the surface of the card's got small specks of mold or something on them and they don't come off.🤦‍♂️🤬😢

That's not how it works. Screw downs don't automatically damage cards. They "can" damage. Not always. As you said, "you can press it too tight." Or you could not press it too tight and be okay. Not rocket science. Sloppy take imo. Particularly given the diamond cut/oc psa 10s. The 3 highest selling cards ever are all sgc and it seems to be preferred for older vintage. The whole, "SGC over PSA" argument is ridiculous. Look at the comps. PSA cards consistently bring higher prices. I'm sure there are examples where an SGC card sold for more than a PSA card of the same grade, but generally speaking there's no comparison. As far as modern/ultra modern, PSA values are even higher. Why? Because the Hobby trusts PSA and they put out a superior product. Everyone has their preference and that's fine, but the results speak for themselves.

Was the screw down case one of the ones that had a recess on the back side? Those are normally ok as long as the card in carefully set inside of the parameters. I'm assuming by 'brick' you are referring to a flat side on both sides of the card. Let me know, thanks.

@@ryanorourke9487 how you figure its you that makes no sense if you can't understand how a card being pressed down in an old screw down hard plastic for years will usually get turned down by PSA so go to SGC.

@@spic0li none of that is accurate. PSA is not even a litter tougher and there is zero non anecdotal evidence to the contrary. Also, just because something could damage a card sometimes does not mean it damages a card every time. Obviously it didn't happen here. Non story.

I think he's saying it was probably submitted to psa and rejected. Next grader to submit to would be sgc. I mean if you have a 12.5 million dollar card, you don't say "I'm going to send this to the second or maybe third most reputable and desired grading company even though I could make a couple mill more by having it in a psa slab."

PSA is perceived as the most reputable grading company and would likely make you an extra million or more dollars by having it graded by them as opposed to another company. Why send it to sgc then? Because you already tried sending it to psa. That is why.

I remember cringing back in the day watching people struggle to put a card in penny sleeve or toploader. I put cards in screw down that slipped and left marks. Heck even a "dip" can find a $5 digital camera at Goodwill that will take pics of Pele.

Well, the 1st card PSA, ever graded was the trimmed Gretzky specimen of Honus Wagner. That alone says alot. Just be careful buy the card not the holder. If you agree with the grade then it's worth buying.
