Good idea, but as a content maker it might not be so good. Loads of people are lazy and don’t actually want to watch the video/content itself so if they have a list off the bat, why even click and watch the video. I would rather suggest you just write the names of the bottles as captions in the video itself so people can just watch the video. Problem solved. Cheers!! Love the Content!

I think any Old Elk product is quality. I also love the great value in all of the Sagamore Spirit line. That Dareringer is really good too. Knob Creek's premium selections like their select and store picks are a readily-available option too. Frankly, just about any store pick is a good gift. Most liquor stores or states offer them, and the extra time spent to choose quality barrels usually allows for a nice gift, no particular distiller.

Some great ones here, guys! I especially agree with Trenton on the Widow Jane Decadence. It is definitely my personal top bourbon of the year. Like dessert in a bottle, but not cloyingly sweet or artificial. Just a pleasant maple bomb. Also, I always have a WR Double Oaked, OF 1910, and Bunnahabhain 12 on my shelf at all times. Fantastic suggestions from you both.

@bub tub If you like WRDO, I think you will like OF1910 as well. It has those same sweet oaky characteristics with the typical banana notes of OF, plus brown sugar, vanilla, and caramel. It's a nice easy drinker. When thinking about investing in higher-end bottles, it's sometimes helpful to go have a pour somewhere to make sure you love it first. Cheers!

I'd agree with your Bunnahabhain 12 mention, Kurt! That's one of my all time favorite Scotch whiskeys, right behind Lagavulin 16. I haven't had a ton of Scotch, but those are a couple of bangers in my opinion. Trenton, I really like that Bulleit barrel strength pick. I was actually drinking that last night. Such delicious whiskey. I think that flies under the radar a bit. One option I always throw out there for people looking to gift whiskey is a store pick. Doesn't really matter which particular whiskey, just find a store pick. I always appreciate getting a store pick cause even if I have the "standard" bottling, I'm still getting something unique.

Just a note on Scotch: almost every "Single Malt" Scotch is in fact a blend. It's just blended from different whiskies made from malted barley that were distilled and aged at the same distillery. And if it has an age statement it's the age of the youngest whisky used in the blend. For example, Macallan 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a blend of many different whiskies all distilled by Macallan. There could be whiskies that are 20 years old, or 15 or 18...but the youngest must be no younger than 12 years old. The master blender at Macallan is responsible for sampling the whiskies and determining which will be blended to create the Macallan 12. The goal is keeping the distinct flavor bottling after bottling, year after year.

I have to agree on the 1910 over the 1920…for me the 1920 drinks a bit hotter than I expected (still fantastic nonetheless) but as a gift, the 1910 makes more sense. As for the Rabbit Hole, I haven’t had any of them but I do know we got 4 varieties at one point (Cavehill 4 Grain, Heigold Straight, Boxergrail Straight Rye and the Dareringer Straight) and they have been moving pretty quick for the holidays. And for rye whiskey, I’ve heard the Angel’s Envy is so smooth and doesn’t drink like a typical rye (around $95 in my store in Pa).

I was dealing with this recently and more or less have a thought process: Something they drink often or a bottle you know isn’t in their collection. One of my friends really likes Weller 12, so we’ll give him one of those. For the other bourbon guys, their collections are pretty large so there’s really no need for more bottles. I’m just gonna give them some bourbon or cigar related gift like glasses, lighter, etc… It’s kind of silly to go all crazy trying to find the perfect gift for people who have everything.

Really good list - plenty of info from which to experiment - thanks. I was a bit surprised at the lack of Irish whiskeys (say, one of the "Spots" or one of the outstanding Redbreasts) or one of the great Willet ryes ... but that's me. On another note, I absolutely loathe the Westland whiskey(s). I'm a Seattle-based former fan of the relatively new whiskey house. Their sell-out wasn't all that surprising, and I'll set that issue aside ... even before they sold their souls, the sherry cask whiskey was a dog. Some bottles are OK, others are nearly undrinkable (usually having the awful aftertaste that you get from a skunked bottle of port). A number of local bars have stopped carrying this whiskey (and others from Westland) due to the inconsistent quality of their product.

Not to be a nerd, but that compass box is not a single malt blend. It's a blended malt, or vatted malt. It's a blend of different malts from different distilleries. Almost all single malts are just blended from barrels from the same distillery. Blended scotch is when you mix malted scotch with grain scotch. 🤓

I agree with Orchard House as a good blended single malt recommendation. Compass Box is really a stand-out Scotch blend house, and I find myself reaching for their bottles over many of my non-blended scotch whiskies lately. One note however: Orchard House does indeed contain peated whisky. It’s faint, but is present (I notice it on the back end of the palate). My wife does not care one bit for peat influence, and picked up on it immediately when nosing Orchard House. This can be confirmed by checking out Compass Box’s website where they give a breakdown of the blend for each bottling. Their pie charts show that Orchard House contains ~2% Coal Ila single malt matured in first full bourbon barrels.

That Orchard House is a very good blend. Generally anything coming from Compass Box is good, but sometimes quite expensive. That Orchard House has a great price-quality ratio and perfect for people who have never had Scotch before. A LOT more interesting than your Balvenie 12s, Glenmorangie 10s or Glenfiddich 12s - don't let the blend moniker scare you off because as Kurt said, it's a malt blend, there are no grain whiskies involved which makes for a lot more flavor. Bunna 12 is obviously also great, but I feel that's more for people who've already had some of the entry Scotches and are ready for something "more".
