For a free to play game, I would recommend Sky Children of the Light! It's a cute and cozy game but it is a cosmetics game and it has a simple loophole with events nearly monthly. I also recommend Dinkum but that's on PC. Portia on Switch is usually on sale for like less than $5 and they are working on fixing the loading time but it's pretty good for a first time into the series and Sandrock is really not that different from it

I think Stardew is definitely the best bang for your buck. Theres so much backstory to every character, and the town itself and theres a TON of stuff to do and has a lot of replability as well. Plus multiplayer option!

I honestly think Stardew valley is one of the best games ever created, it's basically its own genre now (yes it was inspired by harvest moon but I feel a plethora of games are now more inspired by Stardew than HM) Its got it's own charming and recognisable aesthetic, beautiful music, great characters and writing, an addictive game loop, few if any bugs or issues.. it's one of the few games I would rate 10/10 honestly. I have lots of games I love just as much or even more BUT I admit they are more flawed than Stardew.

I actually recently browsed the eshop for cozy games and found one that's perfect for me as a cat and space lover!! It's called Cat's Cosmic Atlas and it was on sale for around 2 dollars, regular price was 20 I think? I was delighted to get it at such a steal cause if it turned out I wasn't happy with it then I wouldn't feel like I'd wasted monies!! It's a really sweet game and I mostly play it to unwind right before bed. You play as a cat astronaut and explore the night sky to discover and learn about stars, planets, space, etc. So if anyone else is interested in cat or space themed games, I recommend it.

Stardew Valley is also a favourite of mine of the switch obviously. I’m defo gonna but Let’s Build a Zoo - Planet Zoo and Jurassic Evolution are my fav PC games so I think I’ll love it! ❤

I recently downloaded and started playing The Oregon Trail and I like it!! There are some updates interms of story line from what my elder millennial self remembers from my days playing it on the PC in the 90's, so that's cool. I think some may debate on whether or not it's considered a cozy game (keeping people alive can be stressful) but the pace, the graphics, and the music/sounds along with the basic PG content puts it into cozy territory for me. Last I looked it was under $15, I also had some points on the eshop so I ended up paying $10 for it. It's nostalgic and engaging, definitely recommend!

I love mailtime, but I was a little frustrated with the navigation aspects. There is a similar game with slightly different graphics called Smushi Come Home and I really enjoyed that one. The play time also seemed slightly longer than Mailtime. So, I loved both, but favor Smushi!

Cheap recommendations: Cozy Grove is usually on sale for less than $10. It’s cute and fun and there’s surprisingly a lot to do in the game, help the locals, plant and harvest flowers, customize furniture, take care of animals, upgrade and decorate your house, clothing options… Also “Loud: my road to fame” is on sale for $1.99 it’s a rhythm game like guitar hero, with all original music and the hard mode is HARD but fun. The story mode is ok but you have to go through it to unlock all songs for free play.

Littlewood is amazing! Dave the Diver is a MUST get, especially if you like sushi! It packs a lot of play in a cheaper game. There is fishing, farming and exploring. The main story is very well written too.

The only big problem I have with Stardew Valley is that it gives me a headache if I try to play it on a large screen, so having it on Switch was a must for me since I can play it handheld. Also there’s that I love Sebastian so much I can’t bring myself to romance anyone else even though I also like Leah a lot. It’s frustrating! Coffee Talk is the only game I can think of not on the list that I would put on it. I also have the otome game “How to Take Off You Mask Remastered ” on Switch and it seems very sweet, but since I haven’t played much, I can’t recommend it yet.

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure. A sweet little game with a nice story/theme and easy-going gameplay based on capturing photos of animals. My only criticism is that it doesn't store the images you actually captured; which felt like a missed opportunity. Get it on sale and I expect it's under $15 (I'm in a different region).

If you could only buy 1 game on this list and you haven't played any of these before, buy Stardew Valley you will not regret it. Also if you play PC or on the steam deck too sometimes the sales there are better so if you don't have a preference and want to play the vanilla game only I'd compare the prices for when it was last one sale to decide which one to get. Friends of Mineral Town is a fun game but it's a very old school farming sim made slightly more modernized for the re-release do not go into it expecting it to be like newer games in the series but, if you like figuring out things for yourself(or using online tutorials a lot) in older video games, are fine with progressing slowly over time and, want to see a modern remake of one of the games that inspired Stardew Valley and most other modern farming sims it can be a fun time. I enjoy it but I still haven't gotten far in it after a year of owning it since it feels slower compared to other farming games I've played(like Stardew Valley or a game that's similar but has more fantasy RPG type things to do in it like Rune Factory 4 special) I tend to want to play or replay those more personally. Let's Build a Zoo is a super fun time I have the PC version BUT just know it is not great for stress relief if you want a cozy game with 0 consequences. It's super fun and entertaining if you loved games like zoo tycoon though. Your animals including hybrids CAN die if not taken care of properly or they get too old and there's a ton of micromanaging even on PC the menus are tricky to navigate at times. Also the game has a morality system so pay attention to it as you go so you know what you want to do with your farm some choices are very heavy on dark humor and if you're someone who is sensitive to that stuff make sure you stay on the good moral path(the yellow not the purple, purple is evil) to avoid that. If you're someone who thinks its funny you're going to have a great time with that side. It is optional you don't HAVE to pick the evil options but you will have choices to make. There's really fun dlc for dinosaurs and an aquarium. Also there is a free build zoo where you can use all items from all your zoos including the DLC BUT you have to unlock the items in the normal game first to access it. I'd advise you to wait for a sale if you ever want it or any dlc for it.

Also important to note for any farming sim game, if romance and friendship with the npcs is important to you do some research on the game before buying to see if you are able to play it how you want before hand. In mineral town if you want to marry someone you can't ever get divorced AND if you want to be with someone of the same sex it's not a marriage in all languages and versions of the game sometimes it is a "best friend" even though you still have a ceremony like it's a marriage. But there are 0 consequences if you want to date everyone before choosing 1 to marry. Also there are some hidden marriage candidates and if you miss certain choices and events to make them an option in that save, you can't date or marry them in that save file at all.

I have stardew valley and played at least 10 hours so far, and honestly I don’t get the hype. Maybe just too slow a grind for me. I did love Cat Cafe Manager, but it is a fairly short game. Jurassic World Evolution is also chaotically good, but I played after seeing on PS5 so the graphic were disappointing for sure on the switch. That was $20 on sale.

Let’s build a zoo is a really fun game and I had a lot of fun playing it. But after a while, when your zoo gets bigger and you add more decorations and animals, the game cannot load properly anymore and will start lagging. ☹️ At some point the game will not run anymore and just start crashing. So I wouldn’t recommend buying it.

I bought Story Of Seasons Friends Of Mineral Town nintendo switch. I have a love / hate for the game. I sort of like it but I hate how all the characters look like midgets in the game tbh~ 🤷‍♀️🤣 I ended up finishing & beating it in one months time. I wish the game was longer. I guess it depends on how you play it~ 🤷‍♀️ I like story of seasons a wonderful life & story of seasons pioneers of olive town alot more tbh. I know story of seasons friends of mineral town is a remake of the GBA version. To my credit even though I still have my original GBA & GBA SP. I never played the original version. To those who have played the original & the switch version what are the differences besides the graphics? Tempted to play the original only because I still have both my GBA's~ 🤷‍♀️✌️

Am I the only one who's never been remotely interested in Stardew Valley despite having liked and played many of the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games? Everytime I look at the game, I always feel like it's just too much, too overwhelming. Hundreds of hours of gameplay or needing to use Excel spreadsheets do not interest me in my age. I prefer shorter more intense games. Or simpler games that don't require too much investment. I remember seeing so many "100 tips before you start playing" or other ridiculous videos. Yikes. Who wants such complicated games? Not my idea of fun. I actually feel that Stardew Valley was a poisened apple because now, everyone compares all other farming/life sims to that. It's too american, obsessed with accumulating as much wealth as you can get. More, more, more, never enough. Not for me.
