It is a shame that the Event Horizon we got was brutally edited, and the extra footage was damaged beyond use when stored. I ALSO, really loved the film. I especially loved the idea that they showed, which as far as I know, happens often in Lovecraft's lore. The idea that the daughter starts praying to/researching ancient deities to keep her family safe. But once she finds the right one & marks herself up, it actually Forces her to serve it rather than granting her protection. A few people that reacted to/reviewed the film called that out as being stupid. But in truth, it happens often in Lovecraft's work. People research things looking for salvation. But once connected, they only become vessels for their power. Not "Protected" at all.

@Microtherion3 жыл бұрын
@@lesleyrussell8200 Well, it's a complex issue, not an either/or (free-for-all versus nothing free ever)... If people share videos via the internet, especially in a commercial way (e.g. either charging a small membership fee or finding advertisers), then it might well affect studio profits, that's true. If people just use film sites to watch videos, and they don't even have a way of making copies which can be accessed offline or shared, then there really isn't some massive issue like that. Film sites used to often have both pay-per-view and free services - the former offering more 'prestigious' or recent content, as you'd expect. There's a lot less of that than there was fifteen years ago. Once, YT itself had a lot more old sit-com episodes (usually around 30 minutes, of course). Later, a time-limit was imposed - about 10 minutes per video, it seemed to be, and people had to post things as part 1/2/3. Later again, they had to be short clips. Finally, lawyers started removing short clips of particular shows. Clearly, people watching a 5-minute clip of an old episode of some sit-com, for example, wasn't costing anyone anything. So, some of the restrictions are fair enough - but most are pretty ridiculous...

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a damn good rendition of At the Mountains of Madness, based off a short story, "Who Goes There?" which in turn, is a modern-day rendition of Mountains. The sheer level of paranoia and the absolute Lovecraftian horrors they have to fight make it the best Lovecraft on the screen, bar none. Even by modern standards the gore is pretty shocking, and uniquely, it is not because of humans killing each other, but the bloody and horrifying transformations the alien goes through when outed. Closest Lovecraft has ever gotten to the silver screen.

If you're willing to pay for a Blu-ray, the answer is often "Scream Factory", and most of their stuff, if still available, is on Amazon. They tend to do some really nice special editions. There's also a great release of Reanimator from Arrow, but the best version, a limited edition, is a bit pricey. Be careful with Arrow, though, as some of their releases are for regions other than USA. The Vestron Collector's Series also has some of the ones on this list, including a very nice release of Dagon. He was the star of 3 Lovecraft based movies collectively referred to as the "Lovecraft trilogy" by critics and fans. Though not the only movies based on Lovecraft at the time they were some of the best known due to early cult status among youth, VHS, and having Jeffrey Combs in them. While he had been in films before it was "Re-Animator" coming out at the same time that VHS players became commonplace that really did it. Re-Animator led a much larger audience to look for lovecraftian films and by extension Jeffrey Combs films. BTW if you haven't seen it yet his character in "The Frightners" is completely nuts and worth a peek as none of the stuff the character does is actually scripted with the whole look and affectations being his ad lib ideas. The Movie itself was not originally a comedy so suffers a bit from the change but Combs is gold.

Let's be honest, every Lovecraft adaptation has to be done by Stuart Gordon and have Combs and Crampton in it. lol

I assume this list incorporates mostly (if not only) movies based on HP Lovecrafts stories? Because if not, there are plenty of other great Lovecraftian movies, like "The Void", "The Ritual", "Annihilation" and the last 15 minutes of "Underwater".

@HadrianRex3 жыл бұрын
It's not happening. After Prometheus came out, del Toro felt like too much of the idea had been depicted in the film, iirc.
@quakethedoombringer3 жыл бұрын
@@HadrianRex I don't know what Del Toro was thinking. The only similarity between the 2 is that you have a bunch of humans discovering space faring aliens with extremely technology crash landed on a remote area with only 1 survivor. The Engineer and Elder things don't even look similar enough to warrant complaints
@HadrianRex3 жыл бұрын
@@quakethedoombringer Prometheus definitely has that Lovecraftian cosmic terror vibe. Instead of the mysterious mountains, we have the alien ruins of inscrutable ancient gods. The creature that came out of Shaw that later impregnated the Engineer is even shaped like a star. The first Alien vs Predator definitely takes inspiration from At the Mountains of Madness, as well, even more overtly than Prometheus, imo.
@quakethedoombringer3 жыл бұрын
@@HadrianRex cannot deny that. The Alien franchise is the closest thing to successful Lovecraftian films that were ironically not written by Lovecraft himself, besides the Thing (1982)

15:54 I was looking these films up on Wikipedia as I went along and noticed they pretty much lifted their narration from the Wikipedia article on the film lol "Susannah Kelton, a newly married woman who was raised in foster care in the city, learns that her real parents have died and left their property to her. She and her husband Mike travel to the island of Dunwich off the coast of Massachusetts to inspect the property. They find a local culture that is clannish, backward and ignorant. The few friends whom they make among the locals, including Susannah's aunt Agatha, warn them that the family mill is cursed and urge the Keltons to leave immediately and never look back. Refusing to bow to superstition, the couple consider rebuilding the abandoned mill. They become the target of a gang of local thugs led by Susannah's lecherous cousin, Ethan. Their reign of terror is ended by something still living in the shuttered attic room of the mill, something that caused Susannah to have nightmares as a child." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shuttered_Room
