With hundreds of colors to choose from, setting up a new watercolor palette is intimidating. You don’t want to waste money on colors you won’t use or colors that don’t work well together. Watercolor paint tubes also last a long time, so you want to choose colors that have staying power on your palette.
If you’re looking for new paint colors, watch as I set up my new watercolor palette and share my tips on how to shortcut your color research and find colors that you love.

I wanted to say - Dr. Oto Kano is another great resource on KZbin for colour mixes, and she has entire series on things like colour showdowns (comparing two or more similar colours) as well as looking at many different brands' versions of colours to compare texture, hue, etc. I always consult her extensive catalogue when considering colours to buy/try.

I really love this palette. I am obsessed with Daniel Smith's Green Gold even though I've never had it for myself. I do have Rich Green Gold which I feel is very similar to Nickel Azo Yellow, but cool. I went through my tube so fast, faster than any of my other paints to date. This palette you've created here is very close to something I'd create for myself. I also love looking at the dot cards of the Daniel Smith Ambassadors. My two favourites are Thomas Schaller and Jan Min, which is no surprise that I'm in love with their colour palettes because when I look at their paintings they give me shivers. They literally take my breath away, and I know it's in no small part to what they do with colour. My favourite thing about watercolour is that I've tried other mediums (mostly acrylic, but I also took a colour theory course using oils) and to me, no other medium allows for the study of colour and light like watercolour. I have learned so much about colour since I started in watercolour. Ironically, I feel like I've learned more about colour than I have about actual painting, and I think it's because I've yet to create a palette that actually inspires me to pick up my brush. I understand the merits of a classic limited palette (which is usually a split primary palette) but honestly, I don't want to paint when that's what I have set up for myself. Intuitively I feel like what's probably holding me back is that I know of colours (and/or palettes) that I'm in love with, but I don't have them for myself. I keep getting things that are supposed to be "sensible" and they are utterly uninspiring to me. So, I appreciate this video and how you describe each of the colours as "little gumdrops of happiness." I'm going to try your suggestions here and see if they help. Good luck on your abstract journey. :)

I completely agree with you. Watercolor is an amazing way to learn about light and color. My other palette is the sensible split primary palette and earth colors. I wanted this one to be fun and inspire me. So far it has! I was inspired a lot by Tom Sheppard, Buffy Kaufman, and Jean Haines color palettes. What I love about the artist’s signature palettes is that they are so unique. I think you need to curate a “gumdrops of happiness” palette for yourself. Start by picking your favorites from the colors you already have. If you have any artist friends, you could make and swap dot cards to sample each other’s colors. Thank you for commenting!

The dot sample cards are a great suggestion. To jump into KZbin tutorials. I bought colors and brands recommended by multiple youtubers, which was an an expensive mistake. Thankfully most come in 5 ml tubes. Your colors are similar to mine, but lacks earth tones. I ended up setting up a landscape vs botanical vs studio pallates just to keep my pallate from becomming too big. I also set up a minipan pallate for my travel kit as well.

My dad gifted me the dot cards and it’s a gift that keeps on giving. I have earth colors on my other limited palette. I also have a large ceramic studio palette that I’ll be adding my new colors to so they’re all together. I may have to steel your idea and do a botanical palette next.

✔️Absolutely LOVE cool colors!! I don’t care too much for reds, but I think I’d add one. A deep true red.. (not orange leaning) would suffice. Great Pallet!!

Why did you land on Nickel azo yellow Fuschite genuine Green vs blue shades Lavender? I am so curious to hear your thinking on this. Coming from a limited palette I was expecting more traditional pigments all the way around. As a passionate fan of Aussie red gold and quin coral I have no questions on those. I mean, obviously! I love curating palettes and I have some colors common in almost all of them… Aussie red gold WN transparent orange Davinci or WN perm rose Cobalt turquoise Sap green May green or spring green or leaf green Viridian for mixing And I have the two pigments for schmincke shire green in my summer palette. I am doing that more it so fun! 😊 I love new gamboge or Indian yellow but haven’t really settled on another yellow. I think that’s why I was curious how you got to azo yellow. Oh do try Paris blue it’s scrumptious No opera pink for you? Makes the best peaches, no?

I have another palette that is my mixing palette. I chose colors for this palette that I wanted to use for abstract painting. Some of them are great for mixing and others I chose simply because I loved the color.

WN transparent orange is my favorite vibrant orange! Much more than pyrole for most applications. Pyrole is useful for skin tone mixes since it goes pink fast, but for florals, DPP is a much better pigment, more intense orange.

@@kraznia true but there is one pyrrole I love as much maybe it’s red and I think it’s Daniel smith ??

Quin rose is an absolute must for me, currently using rose red deep from Davinci, also like quin china rose from Turner. Make my own convenience mix of pthalo green and DS permanent brown that I call vandyke green. I premix it in full pan quantities since I use it quite a bit. I also use perylene violet a lot for shadows, especially in florals. Other must haves are buff titanium and davinci’s manganese blue and burnt sienna deep. Neutral tint is a quite useful mix, but Payne’s grey will work too.
